He tugged nervously at the Hem of his sleeve staring at the door way to the infirmary for some time. He had been an apprentice in the cothold, but he didn't know the Healer here and it made him more nervous. What if he had people who hadn't been made Candidates to deal with and didn't have time for him?

But... could it hurt so much to ask if he could still try and squeak it in among his other duties? If he never got picked by a dragon then at least he would have that to fall back on still.

He entered the infirmary glancing over the rows of beds, neatly made in rows against the walls and made his way in just a few steps before pausing.

"Sir?" He asked tentatively.

A short, lean man with wild grey hair and rather impressively large spectacles looked up as Jarest spoke. Mumuring to himself, he scribbled a note on the paper at the foot of an occupied bed and smiled at its sleepy occupant before padding over to the boy.

Removing the glasses he folded them up and stuck them in a breast pocket, "Mmm, yes? Is there something the matter Candidate?" His deft gaze looked Jarest up and down and summed him up in the space of a heart beat : hale.

"Ah...no sir." He shook his head glancing the man over with wide blue eyes from behind an unruly shock of black hair.
"I ah... I was actually, here to see if.. if I could help." He said tentatively. He bit at his lip as the man approached and sized him up, it was an awful habit he knew but all the same he had a hard time not doing it when he was on edge.
He straitened and squared his shoulders as he was always cuckolded to do and tried to make sure he appeared at least competent even if self assured was hiding somewhere in his ego's chest of drawers in the face of elderly strangers to whom he should absolutely be polite and respectful and should mind what he said.

"Help?" The man blinked and tilted his head, whuffing with a curious expressioin, "And... just how do you plan to do that? On what grounds do you think you should be in my caverns, hrm?" Barthelo asked, turning around to return to his charts and vials, looking them over with the air of a man who had spent years doing this.

"True or false, fellis can be used on dragons?" He glanced over at Jarest, "And... what's better for a fever? To starve it or cool the person?" If the boy was interested in helping he had to know something about medicine or he'd just get in the way.

"Where are you from, Candidate?"

"F...False!" he said quickly wide eyed. "And what?... I uh... its... starve a cold isn't it? but... its..." he stammered "Ah...I er..." he scrabbled for the change in topic. "I'm from ...Namor, from one of the cotholds beholden to Malvern!" He fumbled feeling very very thick all the sudden. Maybe he shouldn't have come, what if he upset the man, what if he got thrown out and told never to even -try- healing again oh god.

"I'msorrytohavebotheredyou." He added at the end

"Good." The Masterhealer nodded as he turned towards some bundles of plants that were hanging on a board a few steps away, pursing his lips, "Well, Candidate of Namor, I do hope your hands are steadier then your mouth or you'll risk killing your patients. How long have you been an apprentice, albeit a skittish one?"

He turned again to regard the boy evenly, clasping his hands before him in the stereotypical doctor fashion.

He exhaled in shocked relief, stunned that he hadn't just been booted out of the room, if not the Wyer.
"F-Four years or there about sir." He answered trying to keep the stammer of nervous out. "I... I think my hands are a great deal steadier sir." he added trying not to worry his lip.

"Is that so? Name these herbs and..." He unrolled a utensil pouch onto the table, the metal instruments gleaming in the light of the lanters, "name what these things pieces are for." Barthelo gestured at the small spread of things, mostly knives, needles, and few blunt objects.

"What's your name, boy?" He asked belatedly, "And do you know who you speak to?" He arched a brow, amused.

"Ah... Redwort," He pointed to one of them "Used ...for sterilization and... against the effects of Numbweed" he said carefully trying as much as he could to recite from memory though as many times as he had practiced he was nervous. "You... can strain the leaves and save it but it needs diluted before use if you do."

"Um...Numbweed, also needs diluted before use because you'll blister." He said pointing to another. "But it deadens feeling on contact, and should be used externally only..."

"And that's felis, which is...addictive, and poisonous to dragon-kin, but it's also a painkiller. It should...never be used lightly or when something else will suffice.. and you would want a fresh plant to pull aloe from because it doesn't store well, leaves should be removed at...the base to preserve them best." He said carefully and moved on to tools.

"Those are... needle thorn? Never to be reused, and, gathered in the fall so the plant won't ah...fire them at you. These others would be...used for stitches?" he said with his voice rising in a tentative question. He'd been speaking in such a string it started to leave him nervous again.
"Ah...these are, to hold open a wound if it needs re-opened, and that's...to remove fragments?" He pointed and then trailed off pulling back his hand from indicating what he knew on sight, though he had never once laid hand on the tools because he assumed they were clean, and he was sure his hands were not.

"I'm...Jarest sir, and Y...you have an air that says you have done this a very long time...if you are not the Masterhealer, I would be...surprised." He said cautiously like he expected to have his ear twisted for saying so.

"Good.... good...." The healer mumured as he listened to the boy and watched as he pointed out the correct things. The apprentice seemed to have some sense about him - that was promising.

"Well Jarest, you seem to know what a proper Apprentice ought to. You wish to help, correct?" Barthelo approached the Candidate then and smiled at him, "I am indeed a Masterhealer. Barthelo, to be exact. I head Malvren's medical staff and you have done well on your interview... though you stutter too much for my liking. Work on that boy."

Clapping Jarest on the shoulder he cleared his throat, "I expect to see you, then, when you are not caught up in your duties. Remember your place, however. Not many would forgo the chance to Impress a dragon - I hear it's quite the life changing experience." His voice was soft, kindly, as if he were speaking to a distressed patient.

"Speak to your peers more and as your stutter eases, I may be inclined to teach you. A smooth voice is more comforting for the injured."

"Y...yes sir, I will sir. I mean I'll try sir... thank you sir!" He said looking relieved and enthused all at once. "A...and I won't sir, I'll be sure to stand sir, and I'll try...nnnot to stutter so much. THANK you sir!" He repeated "I'll talk more...during chores...I mean not, so much to be in trouble but I'll try sir!"

Oddly it seemed the more interested and happy he was the less pronounced the stutter. "Thank you!"

Though perhaps greater the repetition.
