Another day of lessons, chores, and caring for their dragons had come and gone, and now G'brel and her bunkmate sat chatting about different events throughout the day. "Hey, did you hear that Green scream earlier?" she said with a grin. "And all of those answering bugles that responded afterward. I'll bet that was a hell of a Flight." True, Green flights were not at all a new thing around the Weyr, but ever since she had impressed a Blue the whole thought of flights took on a new dimension. Lifth would primarily chase Greens after all once he was mature. Perhaps a Crimson if he was feeling particularly ambitious, but somehow she doubted that. "I wonder who won that... Or who was even involved for that matter. Couldn't see the dragons."

"I think it was Eltimioth--her rider's the one that Searched me out of Eron Hold," Akaya said hesitantly. She was fairly certain she recognized the green's voice--she'd committed Eltimioth's tone to memory (as she had Tereth and any other dragon she'd cornered in her candidacy) and no two dragons sounded exactly alike to someone used to listening for tonal differences. "And it sounded like mostly browns, by the deeper tones. I've not heard a bronze but it's rarer for them to get involved much outside of queen flights, isn't it?" She frowned suddenly. "I was fairly certain rider E'lai preferred women." She wasn't an expert at pigeonholing sexualities, but she had been fair sure on his. She didn't think there were any female brownriders at Trine, and wouldn't they prefer women anyway? It was enough to make one dizzy, trying to sort it all out. Of course, when one had grown up in the weyr, it must seem far more commonplace...as indeed it seemed to G'brel.

"Ah, I remember Eltimioth! She's supposed to be the chatty one," G'brel remarked. Which reminded her, she needed to find E'lai and His sometime, for now that she was a rider the Green would actually be allowed to talk to her...

The young teen was drawn out of her remembrance by Akaya's confused remark on E'lai's sexual preference. "Haha, yeah, I'm sure he does prefer women. Poor guy. But hey, that's why we're lucky to female riders-- more guys for us." Both ways really. There were plenty of male Greenriders about for her to pursue, and Akaya would most likely be dealing with more male Blue and Brown riders than female. "Hm... We should probably start thinking of who we want to chose for future Flights that we'll be in. If there is a favored person I've heard it's more likely for them to win it."
PostPosted: Sun Aug 08, 2010 10:27 pm

G'brel's remarks did not help Akaya one bit with her puzzlement--so preference didn't matter? But wouldn't that... No, that couldn't be right...

"More likely?" Akaya echoed, still confused--and finding herself not liking the answers logic were leading her to. "But...anyone who participates might win. And then we'd..." The Holdborn girl didn't necessarily consider herself a prude (though, if she was being compared to weyr standards...) but she still couldn't quite bring herself to finish the thought. And just how was she supposed to set about this choosing anyway? Like browsing at a Gather stall?

Such a brisk, casual approach left the girl dumbfounded. What happened to the stories of great romance, weyrmates who lasted long as any Hold-married couple?

It appeared that she had caused great confusion in her friend for some reason. "Yeah... And?" After a moment though she laughed. "Oh yeeeeah, you're Hold born. Do you not know how flights work then?" That would explain why the other was confused. "It's not up to the riders; the dragons decide. Well, the rider's preferences do affect the dragon's decisions and how well they fly or not, but in the end whatever male can catch her gets the female. Whether the rider be of your gender preference or not." G'brel made a partial grimace as she contemplated that thought. "Hm, I'm not so sure how I'd feel doing it with another girl... Still, it's better than being a straight male Greenrider or Crimsonrider. Those guys don't have much luck at all when it comes to Flights."

Mine, Lifth interrupted, coming out of his own fantasies long enough to speak. I believe if you go into anymore detail just now Sleeth's rider may well have a breakdown.

Huh? Oh, G'brel replied, catching Akaya's expression. Whoops. "Um... Are you ok?" Having been around Flights all her life, she didn't quite grasp how terrifying such a concept might be to someone in her bunkmate's place.
PostPosted: Sun Aug 08, 2010 11:00 pm

Having the facts stated plainly to her did not help at all, as Lifth astutely noted to his rider. The idea that she was going to just go along with whomever's dragon managed to fly Sleeth--and she remembered, in a moment of terrified clarity, that greens rose far more regularly than queens did. It would happen frequently. And somehow she'd managed to not think much on the subject until just now.

Akayamine?!
The girl's distress had wakened even the stuffed, drowsy green who'd been half-snoozing, and Sleeth got up on her hind legs to perch on Akaya's knees. She butted her head against Akaya's shoulder, trying to physically bring her out of the shock. Akaya's hands flew to her dragon's head and neck, patting the green's hide reassuringly.

She would never regret Impressing, was her single determined thought, and she found herself able to breathe once again. No matter how strange, how...distasteful parts of weyrlife might be, it paled in comparison to the benefit of Sleeth's company, of that she was sure. She took one deep breath, then another, summoning the semblance of a smile to her lips to reassure her roommate. "I think so." It wasn't very convincing.

G'brel didn't quite believe her. The poor girl looked to be in shock, and her dragon's reaction only further proved that she wasn't handling things well. "It's actually a good thing, really," she tried to assure her. "I've heard that mating flights can be the most enjoyable sexual experience one ever has. You and your dragon will be as one after all, so in essence the emotions and such will be doubled."

I'm still not quite clear on what makes Flights and such so enjoyable, Lifth remarked. The action is for reproduction, is it not? And yet Greens can not actually produce offspring. Why Rise then? What makes it 'fun'?

Ah, it was time for The Talk. And so soon too... Well, I'm not sure why Greens rise actually, but as far as why it is fun it is simple: the body is designed so that acts of sexual intercourse bring sensations of great pleasure to both parties involved. I suppose that also helps to promote reproduction, but for the most part people and dragons do it for the pleasure.

Ah, I see. That makes more sense. He wasn't going to bother asking His the specifics of what created the pleasure, for he doubted that she knew. If he ever came across someone knowledgeable in that subject later on though he'd be sure to ask.

Akaya privately suspected any attempts to communicate clearly on this matter between her and G'brel were doomed to failure, if only because their backgrounds were so very different. Still, she was making an effort, so Akaya could do the same in return...

"That's not terribly reassuring when yo--I--" Akaya paused, and steeled herself. She was a Harper still at heart, and a Harper could communicate at the very least! "G'brel, I'm a virgin. I also did not have any immediate plans to change that fact, even before Impression. And I'm just now realizing that my plans don't matter."

Sleeth was as confused as her rider had been, back on all fours as she lay her head in Akaya's lap. Of course you matter! Why would you say that?

Shh, shh, it's got nothing to do with you and everything to do with me, she thought, stroking Sleeth's neck and trying to think calmly. This was exactly the sort of thing they were supposed to be avoiding, wasn't it? Agitating their partners.

G'brel didn't quite see how virginity was at all related to the matter, other than plans of not wanting that to change. "Ah. Well, sorry about that, but there's nothing that can be done to avoid it really. Still, at least you have until Sleeth has fully matured? That'll take a while."

Mine, ask her why she does not wish for this status to change. Especially if intercourse is as pleasant as you say it is.

The teen glanced over at her Blue. Why don't you ask her?

I do not wish to talk to her, he replied simply. He wasn't as comfortable with bespeaking random humans as some of the other dragons were.

Whatever. "Lifth would like to know why you want to remain a virgin. He's a bit confused on the matter."

Even the dragon didn't get it. Akaya sighed, and tried to remain impassive if only for Sleeth's sake. "Lifth, it's part of...my social conditioning, I suppose you could say. G'brel thinks differently because she was raised here, and she's used to such things, but... Outside the Weyr, things work differently. In the Hold, humans are supposed to be more...well, you find a partner and you marry them and that's that. I know the Weyr has weyrmates, and that's kind of similar but...well, there's always a bit of chance to it, isn't there?" She continued to pat Sleeth who'd begun to lightly croon something that sounded like a lullaby, perhaps one that Akaya had sung to her before.

"It really comes down to control, and choice. I'm not comfortable with the idea of having multiple partners, especially ones I can't really ever completely choose for myself," she said, trying to look at it as objectively as G'brel seemed to be able to. "I don't want my choice to be made for me, but it seems as if that's not relevant now." Certainly, she'd had some interest in the opposite sex before, but...well, it'd always come second to her craft, and she hadn't expected that to change for a long time. Just like she hadn't actually expected to Impress.

All will be well,
Sleeth interjected, reassuring. Your choices will matter, I'm sure of it! And I won't do anything you don't want me to do.

You say that now, love, but your choices are stuck just as much as mine, Akaya thought sadly. But don't worry. I'll be all right, and you'll do fine. That was all they could do, really. There were a lot more important things in the grander scheme of things than Flights and all that; she'd make do through the unpleasant bits and revel in what she could. She hadn't found an equal match yet to the pleasure of singing with Sleeth, for instance.

So it is a matter of choosing one person then, Lifth remarked, thinking the matter over briefly. Well, as Mine has said, it will be a while before we have fully matured. Use that time to seek out a desirable partner and then ask Sleeth to only let his dragon fly her. Then your dilemma is solved.

G'brel's lip briefly twitched into a small smirk before she passed on her dragon's message to the harper-turned-rider. "It's not a bad plan actually. I know we'll be busy as all get out until then, but it's probably better than just sitting and waiting."
PostPosted: Mon Aug 09, 2010 8:15 pm

"It's a bit more complicated than that, Lifth, but I appreciate the advice," Akaya said dryly. "I can't just...it's far too cold and calculating to just...look over our fellow weyrlings and be 'oh, I like that one'! I mean, I suppose there's a slim chance there might actually be one of them I do find attractive and they like me back but...now every time I look at a boy with a dragon, there will be that--that calculation to it." She shuddered. What ever happened to romance? "And I don't want to be looked at just as a possible roll in the hay either!" she added, crossing her arms. And she was worried about that now, at least a little.

Why would you be rolling in hay? Is it fun?
Sleeth asked.

"It's a euphemism--you don't take it entirely literally, dear," Akaya said, definitely not wanting to explain the facts of life to a few-days-old dragon.

"We don't mean to literally pick them out of a line-up," G'brel replied with a laugh. "Make some friends-- among the guys-- and see if anything more develops out of that friendship. You only have to do the 'cold, calculating' thing as you put it at the last minute when it's absolutely necessary. If you start getting to know guys before then though that might not even be necessary." She smiled faintly. "If it helps, I even know a very flirty guy who might be willing to help as a last resort-- although he's a bit of a dimglow, so I really would suggest others." It was the same guy in fact that she had described as a 'wherryhead' before, but there was no need to admit this little fact. She's be saving him for herself for the time being. "Ooooh, wait, he's a Greenrider. Nevermind. In any case, you get what we're saying, right?"

Lifth was amused by Sleeth's question on the hay remark. Based on the current conversation, I believe that phrase is used as another way to describe mating, he explained to the Green. Of course, he wasn't sure how well she had even been following along with the current conversation as it was, so perhaps the fact that they were discussing mating would be news to her.

Akaya had to at least chuckle at G'brel's "mistake." "Yes, I get what you are saying, and you are probably right. Just...let me get all the panic out right now, and maybe I'll be able to deal with it better tomorrow." Meeting people would no doubt prove the difficult part, as she was always not particularly people-oriented at the best of times. Polite, yes, and she tried to be pleasant, but there were so many times to be distracted by... Like singing! Well, a dragonchoir was one way to meet people. And there had been that really lovely brown from the Hatching she'd wanted to meet... Maybe his rider would even be a decent person. There might be hope yet! "And I...will try. I'm not particularly good at making friends though, be they male or female," she admitted.

Mating?
Sleeth asked, slipping her head off Akaya's lap and regarding Lifth with curiosity, as she addressed him alone. Clearly the subject distressed Hers, and she didn't want to make her unhappy again. Is that what all the fuss is about? There was a pause. Wait, is it a good thing or a bad thing? Do I have to do it?

"Well hey, I can help you with that," G'brel replied with a grin. "I can start off by introducing you to my friends at least, and then we can work from there. I should probably get to know some more of our fellow Jr. Werylings better anyway, so it couldn't hurt for us to become a bit more social. When time allows it of course. Maybe during meals?"

If dragons could laugh, Lifth very well might have when Sleeth revealed how utterly clueless she really was on the subject. Had she not been listening to them at all? Clearly she was not one of the brighter ones. It is a good thing, the blue replied in a composed manner, and you will be doing it quite often once you are grown from what I have gathered. Yours is discovering that when you mate, she will automatically mate with the rider of whomever you mate with. Not that he knew this little fact before either, but that did not matter. He knew now and had a fairly decent grasp at how things worked from the riders' conversation. It is quite good according to Mine, although we will not be able to do it ourselves until we are fully grown.
