I'm interested in purchasing my first DSLR camera. I'm very much so an amateur and this is really my first "foot in the door," so to speak, with SLR cameras.

The first camera that caught my eye was the Nikon D3000, but as I looked more into it, I found that more people suggested going to the D5000, saying that for the price difference, you get much more in quality.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the D5000 and whether or not its a decent amateur camera.

Thanks <3

I've done some research into it as I'm upgrading from my D40 when I get my college loans. It seems to be a really decent camera at a good price for the features. I can't compare it to Canon cameras because I've always used Nikon, but that's the camera I'm planning on getting.

I'm interested to see what other replies you get on this thread. :] Thanks for making it!

i use a Nikon D5000!
it's actually really, really good.
the LCD screen is a plus, it does pretty much everything.
it's small, has nice grip, easy to use.
this is my first dslr, and it made things easier stepping into photography.

there is bad things, though.
since it's rather new, not all of Nikon's equipment are compatible.
like, some speed lights and prime lenses. (idk what else)

other than that, it's very good.
totally recommend it.

I use the D60, which was recently discontinued (or "outdated")... ;_;

I think that the D3000 was its "equivalent replacement", so I'd say that It's a great DSLR for beginners. Seeing that the D3000 and the D5000 are right next to each other on the price range, there might not be a massive quality difference, but I could be wrong. The lenses have the biggest influence on image quality anyway.

Get the D5000 only if it's not to harsh on your budget. I'll also suggest getting the 55-200mm lens too. Only having the standard included lens isn't very convenient.

Happy shopping!

I personally love my d5000 and it was an awesome camera for me that got me into photography first thing.
