Coruscant. Core World of the Galactic Republic, central political and business world for the entire galaxy, and a sprawling planetary city.
Long ago, it was a lush, forested world. It's seas were rich, and it's life was abundant.
Now, those seas have been drained and are dead, and the last remaining native creature is the reptile-like Hawkbat, which hunts hideous building-dwelling parasites that devour pour conduits, building materials and wiring.
To many, this planet is a gleaming gem. A technological achievement, and a wonder to behold. From space, it gleams and glows as a Corusca Gem in the morning sun.
However, this image is misleading. Under New Republic control, it is a better world than it had been under the Emperor's watch, but it is still a cess pool.
It crawls and swarms with criminals. Death Stick dealers, Hutt Crimelords, the remainder of the Black Sun organization, and The Exchange, the intergalactic crime organization that has claws in every major form of crime in the known Galaxy.
In the upper levels, where the sun can be seen and the skies are clear, it is a pleasant, if crowded, world. It's hundred mile high towers spire into the heavens and awe those who have never seen such things before.
In the middle levels, the people who can't afford to dwell above make their lives comfortable. Bars, stores, racing arenas and the like are all commonly found here, as well as low-rent apartment complexes and private residences.
Once you've gone lower, all bets are off. In the lightless depths of Coruscant, storms rage between buildings. The self-contained weather systems are unpredictable, but so are the residents...
In these shadowed, lightless depths, sub-human troglodytes dwell, the inbred offspring of political prisoners and those who escaped The Emperor's wrath.
Criminals hide below, where the light of day, and the eyes of justice, dare not tread. It's said The Emperor even kept his private torture chambers hidden somewhere in the depths.
The Animals are even worse. Escaped beasts from import lots and illegal trade areas have made a living here, along with the odd Dianoga, and hideously mutated horse-sized rats.
Only the brave dare go into the depths of Coruscant...Or those with something to hide.
Cities Of Note: As Coruscant is a single planetary city, there are no cities. However, there are three major landing pads of note:
Bolt's Dock: A minor docking facility just below the middle range of the city. It's frequented by Smugglers, Gamblers and quite a few bounty hunters. It's a good place to start for anyone looking to make fairly good money with a little difficulty.
Republic Center: The primary entry point for incoming mass planetary transports is the safest, and most reliable, source of transport on or off of the planet. It also handles major import and export deals.
Senatorial Hall: This structure was formerly used by the Old Republic to house the Galactic Senate, but shortly before the battle of Yavin it was dissolved by the Emperor and his loyalists. Now, it has been reestablished by the New Republic, and is in full use. It has a high-class landing facility for diplomats and visitors, and a public docking area for those who have business to attend to elsewhere in the city.
Sentient Races Of Note: None. Coruscant has no native sentient races. As a melting pot world, it does, however, have examples of nearly every sentient race in the Galaxy.
Non-Sentient Races Of Note:
Hawkbats: Hawkbats are eagle-sized flying reptiles. Once an endangered species due to over-hunting, they are now more common. Their primary purpose is to hunt and kill the enormous parasitic Duracrete Slugs, Conduit Worms and the like that cause countless billions of credits in damage to the nigh endless skyscrapers of Coruscant. They are usually grey or blue-green and are to be considered beneficial.
Duracrete Slugs: These enormous, mottled slug-like creatures have rasping mouth parts they use to gnaw away at the stoney duracrete surface of buildings. They can be found on every level, and are considered the worst of the parasites.
Conduit Worms: These insidious creatures are miles-long worm-like organisms that grow inside power conduits, extending tendrils to absorb electricity from their surroundings. They are usually considered harmless, but this could be argued to be false by anyone who's ever woken up to find one probing their ear in search of bio-electric energy.
Mutant Rats: These gigantic, predatory creatures are tumor-covered, nearly skinless monsters that patrol the underworld of Coruscant in packs. They will consume anything they can find and kill, and will always go after carrion if it's available. These are the primary reason why most people arm themselves if they must travel in the depths. Heavy weaponry is suggested, as their tumor-encrusted hide can resist some minor blaster bolts.
