I don't know where this goes so I'll put it here. This is just a curiosity of mine and I want to know what you guys think...
In the anime, Hiei actually went to the ice world, and saw one of the elders talking to Rie; the one who threw Hiei off the ledge, and she said something about a journey of some kind. What I want to know is: Where did that old crone go? I highly doubt there would ever be any need to leave Ice world, yet the old hag leaves? Why? Call me whatever you want but I smell a proverbial and hypocritical rat! evil
Any guesses?

...I need to rewatch that to refresh my memory. Until then, I leave you with these possible answers:

A. Assuming you were watching in English, I would say that there was a mistranslation. Funimation took a lot of liberties with Yu Yu Hakusho by adding humor at the cost of leaving out a lot of information that the Japanese version provided.

B. The elder was referring to someone or something else. Do you know word for word what she said?

C. Death is often described as a journey, and we see that this is particularly true in Yu Yu Hakusho, what with all the roads of the Spirit World leading on to each person's final resting place.

Hmm...option A is a decent possibility, for option B No, I'm afraid I can't recall exact details, but she did say "you will have to look after things while I am away, Rie..." with Rie saying "yes, have a safe journey, elder..." Not word for word, but the best I could remember. sweatdrop It also kind of rules out option C.
You may be right in the possibility of a mistranslation, though.
I'll keep up this haunt, though, just to see what others may think.
Thank you for shedding some light on the topic for me, though. You're a respectable person. smile

I don't think that rules out death. *shrugs* I think having a safe journey could be a perfectly reasonable thing to say to someone about to die. Depends how you look at it. It's a little weird, but then again, so are most things in shows like this one. xD All spiritual and s**t.

I don't know. xD I think it'd make perfect sense.

This thread just gave me a plot bunny.

What if, as Koorime reach the end of their natural lifespan, they wander off the island for the first time in their entire lives? Due to their isolation [and consequent unawareness of what lies beyond the glacier] and old age, they wouldn't survive for very long, but what if that served as a rite of passage into death?

...You know what - that probably made no sense whatsoever from a canon perspective. I'll work on it.

Plot Bunny? What's that?
Although it does seem like an interesting theory. Man, the thing curiousity does to a fledgling psychic...

A definition taken straight from Urban Dictionary: "An idea for a story (usually used to refer to fanfic) that gnaws at the brain until written."

Ah...but wit, aren't Koorime's life expectancies infinite??

...They are? Where did you get that? [More like, how did I miss that in the first place?]

By having an "infinite" lifespan, I'm assuming you mean if no sickness or injury or any other cause of death happens to a Koorime, she'll live indefinitely. We know for a fact Koorime can die because Hina did.

True, but depending on what story you follow, manga or anime, Hina dies either way. in the manga because of Hiei's birth, and in the anime from suicide. would that make Hina's trip the whole passage to death thing? That's the origin of my confusion.

Why not? Everyone's trip to the Spirit World is different.

In the original manga, there's a page at the beginning of Hiei's year in the Makai tournament (I have a scan of it somewhere in the guild) that states nearly verbatim: "The life of a koorime is long to the point of seeming endless."

It's the seeming part that throws us. They don't live forever, but they live so long that it feels like forever. It could be said that, because of this and their breeding consistency, the SPECIES might live forever (or until the destruction of Makai).

My god that was weird. For a while I couldn't respond to any thread in the guild because the address kept forwarding to Photobucket. Anywhoo . . .

Hm. Okay. But there's still a difference between an individual Koorime living forever and the entire race living forever.

I would also like to point out that a Koorime's lifespan is probably only that long due to the species' isolation. They're protected from any forms of death, really, other than accidents and suicide. If the Koorime were made to live among the rest of the demons, their average lifespan would sharply drop.
