Jarest hurried down to where he was to meet the other candidate, Wykla was her name, he was more sure of that because he had been repeating it on the whole way here. At least he hoped he'd been repeating it right, damned -names- why couldn't they be like doing things, doing things was easier to remember than just -saying- them.

He was so sure he was going to be late that he was likely to be there early, such was the way of things. He needed to be more mindful of where he was in the wyer and how long it took to get places and NOT be distracted watching flits and dragons. He KNEW better than that...

Wykla was dragging her feet. Mentally and physically. She'd been assigned yet another chore with someone. That probably meant they'd be watching her every move and she wouldn't have a chance to slip off. Shardin' chores. She gives a sigh. Heading towards the place with the glows at her current pace she'd be late.

When she finally gets there she scans the area for her 'partner'. Now that she was here it was best to just get it over with. Who am I meeting again? J- sumthin.... Jardor... Jador? I'll just ask if someone comes up to me. Her eyes light up. It was a perfect plan. She'd just stand around. If no one came up to her then how could she do this chore when they didn't show up. Wykla leans against the wall with a small smug look.

How unfortunate perhaps for her that he did show.
He puffed slightly out of breath from the jog he'd made, pushing black hair out of his face onto to have about half of it fall back into place in an stringy mess.
"Are you um... Are you Wykla?" He asked cautiously glancing her over and deciding that he was more than a little unsettled by her smug expression. Did she know something he didn't about the chore? Or did she figure to get him to do it all on his own? He shifted back and forth on his heels and waited for her to answer before he asked anymore. After all it wouldn't be fair to ask her those things if she weren't the person he was looking for.

She blinks at him, dismay written plainly across her face. Clearly she hadn't expected him to pick her out. Unfortunately she couldn't ignore him either. "Yeah I am." Wykla frowned and looked him up and down. "What's your name?" Well it looked like she'd have to do this chore after all.

Thankfully he looks tall enough. I'll get him to do the glow changing. She pushed off her spot on the wall and sauntered over to gather up the fresh glows in a bag. Was it just her, or did he seem a little nervous? Perhaps because she was a girl?

"Jarest..." He said guardedly watching her saunter over and offered a hand to take the bag from her. That at least was polite but there was still that look on her face.
"Do you not want to do the chore or is it Me you are disappointed about?" He asked with surprising bluntness for all his edginess.

He didn't wait for an answer though he seemed to expect it, "Which way first?" he added after blinking expectantly at her.

She blinked in surprise when he offered to take the bag. Clearly he didn't know how this was carried out. Wykla would just have to sort him out. "Nice to meet you." It couldn't hurt to be at least a little polite to the poor kid. "It ain't you Jarest. This is an extra chore for me, so course I don't wanna do it." She gives a final nod.

Hefting the bag with a skill born of some practice, her chin jerked in the direction they need to go. "There's a reason they assign two kids to do this job. One hauls the bag of glows while the other changes them out. Since you're taller, you can change." Even though she's only twelve her voice takes on the air of 'one who knows'. Her eyes looked him up and down again. "Unless you really want to carry it." She sounded dubious.

"Oh..." he said with an air of embarrassment. "If its not too heavy...then lets stick with the plan. I don't mind changing them." He said with a small shrug. "Why do you dislike extra chores? They keep us buisy, that's a good thing isn't it?"

She pads down the hall with the intent of getting this done as quickly as possible. Wykla gives him a funny look over her shoulder and sorta leans away from him. Who is this kid that Likes! extra chores? Are they all like this down in the holds? "Um, yeah. I got assigned extra chores cause I skipped out on the ones they assigned me in the first place. If I didn't wanna do my first ones, why would I wanna do extras?"

"I can carry it." She stops at a small outcropping above her head that holds glows. "So you check that one up; if it needs replaced you take it out and put the others I give you in. Then off to the other side and repeat." Wykla casts an expert eye up at the dim glow. "I can tell from here that one'll need to be changed. See how little light its giving off?" Reaching into her sack she pulls out a handful of fresh, brightly glowing glows.

"Why would you -skip- the first ones, you had to know you'd be in trouble, if you impress you can't skip chores because you don't like them!" He said alarmed by what she had said. All the same he sighed and reached up to remove the dimglow and swap it out for the fresh one.

"If you do extra ones, the days you don't seem extra light by comparison anyhow, and you get more practice in, more practice means you can do your chores more quickly." he explained and was quietly proud of himself for not stuttering while he explained.

Wykla blinked and considered what he said. It hadn't really occurred to her that if she did Impress she couldn't skip her dragon chores. "Well normally I don't get caught. I think someone ratted me out." She shrugged, "I donno. Somehow I don't think I'll Impress so why bother with the chores?"

"But if you're always doing extra chores, then you'll never get a day off. Then what good is it?" She frowned. "Practice? Practice for what? You're not making any sense. Why would I want to practice chores, just to get them done faster and get more chores? The whole thing is illogical." She pouts at him. Either she didn't understand him, or he was babbling.

"W...well you don't know i...if you'll impress or not?" He blinked, "I...mean your a candidate right?" He said returning to stuttering as she pouted at him. He didn't handle it so well when his sisters had done it either.
"I..If you get your chores d-done faster they might at least let you p-practice your trade more?"

Wykla picked up her sack to move to the next spot. "Well, I suppose no one really knows. It's just a hunch. There's been candidates who age out. There's no guarantee one way or the other."

She almost glared at him. "I'm a weyrbrat. Emphasis on brat. We don't have trades." Her shoulders slump, "thought I guess you couldn't know that." Wykla looks up at the ceiling as she walks down the hall. "I don't even know what I'd be good at, if I did age-out."

"...C..Can't you pick a trade?" He blinked in surprise. Maybe that was part of why people said that the wyers were such a drain on resources. If they had no trade and relied only on people WITH trades.
"O...or at least try and learn some of one? I...it might be something that made t-the chores more bearable."

Wykla considered his question carefully. "Well yes, we can and are expected to pick a trade if we age out." Her brow wrinkled in thought, "but, I don't know what trade to pick. I'm not really good at anything." The tone of her voice suggested she was a little confused on this subject. I really want to ride a dragon, but if I don't Impress how do I pick something else?

"Well I don't think chores are bearable in any way, so I doubt learning a trade will help with them." She made a face. "Since I still have turns and turns, I'm not really worried about not Impressing right now."

"If you never =practice= you'll never be good at anything though? Sometime's its just someone else seeing a knack in doing something, My...my family were weavers mostly...and...um... I'm l-learning to be a healer because I fixed their splinters." He said trying to encourage her. The idea of being apathetic about trades was so alien to him. At least that was the impression he was getting.
"S...sometimes you just have to learn the stuff you hate to get to the th..things that are really amazing about a trade. L...like I can only do so much as a healer, but I..if I never impress someday I'll be able to...r-really help people."
