Living in the upstate of South Carolina has advantages.
> Clean mountain air
> good friendly people
> good schools
> etc.
But it also has its disadvantages.
> Bigger cities
> less guns
> more people
I live in the subdivison of Taylors, between the cities of Greer and Greenville. That right there puts me at a MAJOR disadvantage for survival. So here is my plan as it stands.
1) Confirm reports
- Im not going to put my plan into action until i can confirm that, without a doubt, the dead have risen and are consuming the living.
2) Gather Weapons
- As it stands the only weapons i have are a wood axe, a steel katana, a pick-ax, and a rusty old machete. Some neighbors have guns so im going to have to do something that i would normally never do, rob them of their weapons.
3) Gather Food and Water
- At any time, no matter what, my family has saltine crackers on hand. There is a small convience store a couple of blocks down the road to my right and to my left there is a dollar general. Food, Water, and some kind of bag will be easly taken care of.
4) Secure transportation
- My family owns a minivan but i want something more...quiet, so i plan on finding a bicycle. bing, bang boom done.
5) Gather my group
- I have a small group of people who are like minded and are willing to help with survival. We have concluded that no matter what we will meet at the high school, the first person there will check if it is clear and if so mark each door with a big black X.
6) travel through hell
- No matter what we will have to travel through Greenville or Greer, so who ever among my group has the most experiance with the place we are going through will lead us, SAFELY, through the city as best as they can.
so far that is what i have planned. To be honest im not expecting the group to survive going through the city, either we all will be consumed or most of us consumed the rest infected. But because I am the leader, I have promised these people I will get them to safety. I will add more as i come up with it

On the subject of your steel katana, I would ditch it. Unless it was a legitimate blade of Tamahagane created by a licensed sword forge, that rusty machete will probably do you more good. Also, be careful when picking a high school as your place of residence. It's not only your idea I'm sure there are many others who are going to do the same, and for looters a high school would be treasure.
If you plan to go through the city be smart about it. This is not Left 4 Dead, you have much more freedom in your travel. Take for example my sticky on storm sewers, this may help you. Or maybe with some radio skills, you could contact someone at the two near by Greenville airports.

PS: travel by day. it's safer.
