 Mercury was taking a nap at the edge of a meadow. The swirl-patterned kit preferred these areas, with tall grass to hide in and small creatures to hunt. This meadow was a particualy plentiful; Mercury had been there for a little over a week. He was just waking up, blinking sleep out of his eyes and stretched his body out. The rainbow-patterns on his fur shimmered a little in the light, making him stand out to anything that might be nearby.

Runaiu was very vain, always had been and always would be. She was just a regular fox, nothing special, yet. She hadn't gotten to the point of perfection, but damn was she fine. She was tribeless, but really what tribe could appreciate her beauty? Anyway, she didn't want to dirty her coat by running around doing some nonsense someone told her to do.
She was traveling alongside the edge of a meadow, watching her reflection, unable to take her eyes of herself. She loved water, mostly because she could admire herself. That is, until she bumped into a curled up blob of...whatever that was. A kit? Runaiu had bumped into a kit. She backed up a few steps, huffing in annoyance.
What was a kit doing here, of all places? He was so ruining her time.

Mercury jumped back, startled at something stepping directly on him. His gold eyes stared around wildly. It didn't take long to spot the cause of his sudden rising. The female fox was practically in front of him.
He looked her over. Gray, with a blue tail and blue markings around her eyes. She was plain, without the flashy markings he had, but still pretty. Mercury's bushy tail waved behind him a little as he looked up into the females face. "Hello," he quiped.
From the look she was giving him he felt like he had done something to offend her. Looking to diffuse some of the tense, he cast about for a compliment. "Your tail's a really pretty blue. Looks nice with the gray!"

She was highly offended. How dare he, she was not gray! She was an unique blue, and he better acknowledge that. Runaiu gave him a look that clearly spoke her distaste, eyes narrowing at the black and rainbow colored fox. She realized she looked not as designed as others, but in due time that would change. Honestly, she didn't need to. She was beautiful the way she was, she just wanted to be perfect. Well, so she thought at least.
"My fur is not gray. It's a shade of blue, but I guess a kit wouldn't be able to recognize that." Her voice was heavily laced with sarcasm, a test if anything. She enjoyed being rude, it gave her the ability to judge how people reacted to her.

Mercury tilted his head, examining her body. The color looked like gray to him, but he supposed with a special turn of mind you could see blue. The two colors were closely related, anyway.
"Does the name of the color matter? It looks pretty no matter what?

Runaiu seemed flattered, nodding at him. Good, he recognized her natural beauty. He better. She flicked her ears at him, scowling still. Her fur was a blue gray, and it did matter. However he had acknowledged her beauty, so she would figure him. For now.
"I guess not. Not everyone has a good eye. I guess," She gave him a dismissive look, noting his fur. "-that your fur is...interesting." Not as pretty as hers, way to many colors for her taste. But she did like it to an extent.

Mercury gave the lady a big grin. "Thanks! It's a little flashy though." Her tilted his head a little and looked up at her face. "I'm Mercury, what's your name?"

"Runaiu." She answered, agreeing that his coat was indeed flashy. She could be a little spiteful at times, but to her she felt like she had a right to judge others. Oh well, Runaiu would either learn her lesson or not. Mostly likely not.

Mercury bobbed his head in an agreeable nod. "Pretty name too." He might have only been a kit, but he had a way of figuring things out and cutting through illusions. He could already tell from Runaiu's body language that she probably figured the world revolved around her. Therefore, conversation must be about her in the beginning and gradually worked around to another topic. Or a question asked in a roundabout fashion. Mercury tried out his new theory.
"So why's such a pretty lady out here in an open meadow? There are no trees to shade you, and too much sun can be bad for your complex," he said, putting just the right amount of concern in his tone.

She was surprised. He did learn quickly! Or maybe he respected her beauty. Either way, he was correct in assuming conversations had to start and end with her. The middle could be filled with whatever nonsense one desired, as long as when she left she heard her name more then a handful of times. Maybe that would change once she actually had a friend and was more interested in another. Right now, she only cared for herself.
"True, but I was visiting a relative. I'm returning to tribeless grounds, where I belong."

"I don't have any siblings. What's it like?" He wasn't sure how this question would fly. It was about her, but not about her. Could go either way, but Mercury was genuinely curious.

He wanted to know about her siblings? She almost glared at him, insulted once more. So, he rather speak about others? Was she not good enough for this little kit. However, he had managed to get her in a more interesting state. He had earned her answer, for now. She had an interesting family situation.
"I have a brother and sister, and three half siblings. It would be fun, if one of my half siblings were not trying to kill me and the others, and my brother didn't hate us. Basically, our parents screwed up and we took the damage." She sat on her haunches, deciding to humor the kit for a little longer.

Mercury's golden eyes widened. "That doesn't sound like much fun at all," he stated. His own parents were a mystery to him; he still wasn't sure if that was a good or bad thing. He was quite content with being on his own for the moment.
"Why do you travel alone," he asked. The tribe thing he got (sorta); some foxes just didn't fit into tribes. But Runaiu seemed liked the kind who would love to be around admirers, not on her own.

She shrugged at this. She didn't belong anywhere, that was why. She couldn't find a home, she couldn't belong. That was all she had wanted for a long time, a place to belong. Now, she had gotten used to being alone. It didn't bother her much anymore, she was used to this life. It stopped being lonely and just started to be a constant ritual. She woke up alone, ate alone, traveled alone, and lived alone.
"I never found a place that I would fit in, I guess." She turned her head, finally showing something other than selfness. "What about you? Don't you have somewhere to belong?"

Mercury nodded his understanding. "I'm the same. Nowhere is what I'm looking for. It's no fun fitting in if you have to change who you are!"
He could see a little why Runaiu would have trouble fitting it. It would take exceptional personalities to accept her, otherwise she might get shunned. And that seemed worse than simply traveling alone.
"It can be lonely sometimes though, belonging only to yourself. Do you ever get lonely, Rinaiu?"
