Ary stared at the folder she had. Lust and patience wasn’t new, but the whole gender thing was. First a guy and now a chick? Whatever floated their boat, she figured. Shrugging lightly, the folder was dropped back into her desk to be sorted at a later time. Someday she’d sort it all out... Eventually... That damn clock was off... “Right, class, got to remain focused,” she muttered, trying to regain her focus lest the entire class pass her by and she missed her student.

Lirona would have been lying if she had said that her knees weren't shaking as she walked to her Melee class. This was more-or-less a completely new experience for her, seeing as the Melee class she had when she was a preteen was a complete disaster. She hadn't been very keen on learning how to fight during that time to begin with, but she had done some growing up since then, and had begun to rationalize that sometimes a good offense was the best defense. Hence why she wasn't heading towards the Spirituality section of the classrooms. Despite her newfound desire to learn, she still had some doubts. What if she wasn't strong enough...?

When she reached what she believed was the right door, Lira tapped a few hesitant times on the wood. She gnawed her lip as she waited for a response, then pushed the door open and poked her head around. "H-Hello? Um, my name is Lirona By'arre-Lorcalle, I'm here for a Melee class, am I in the right place...?"

The smell of fear reached the female before the sound of the nervous footsteps or the very sight of the girl reached her. It wasn't hard to tell visually the teen wasn't exactly... Ah, confident in things. "I assume so since this is a melee class and I'm waiting for someone by your name to show up. Unless there's two Lirona's here," Ary replied, not even offering the girl a wave or actual greeting.

"My name is Ary and I am your melee teacher and no, I don't expect you to be anything more than a beginner in whatever I give you since I don't believe I've had you in a class before," she continued, pausing to get a good look at the girl. Except for maybe the skin coloration and feathers, she had very few things in common with Cody. Then again, when has any of her students ever looked similar to one another?

"So, Lirona, is there anything you specifically wish to learn here? I know a wide variety of things so picking just one for each student that shows up has never been something I was fond of doing," she explained, crossing her arms in front of her chest.

Lirona was just the tiniest bit hurt by the brash response to her (in her mind) perfectly legitimate question, but she quickly told herself not to be so sensitive. This was supposed to make her stronger, after all, and so she was just going to have to toughen up. Besides, she shouldn't get upset about this woman's initial brusqueness; maybe she was just having a bad day. She brought a small smile to her face and stepped fully into the classroom. "Oh, well, good to meet you, Ary. And that's reassuring, because I'm pretty deficient as far as fighting goes," she said with a slightly flustered laugh.

When the choice of class material was left to her, Lirona blinked slightly. She hadn't been expecting that. She touched her lips thoughtfully as she pondered over what little she knew of fighting arts, and then shrugged and smiled apologetically. "Um, sorry, I'm not sure... I'd like to learn something self-defense-like, if possible. I'm not the most aggressive person, as you might have noticed, but it'd be nice to know how to defend myself in case... something happens," she finished with a slight faltering in her voice. If only she'd had that idea before... Jake flapped once or twice after Lira was done speaking; he obviously agreed.

So this one had actually experienced something traumatic. Ary slowly nodded, more understanding in that single nod and next few words than had ever been uttered by her. "Understandable. And if fate does intend for some sort of thing to happen, you'll be prepared. I can promise you that much," she replied softly, shaking her head and causing the white-haired ponytail to swish lightly back and forth.

"I can teach you how to defend yourself. How about I start with general attacking maneuvers and work through various circumstances? Feel free to suggest some as we proceed," Ary continued, the cool tone returning once again as she explained the game plan for their class. A simple one, yes, but the complicated part came in figuring out said circumstances and how to counter them without physically beating them into a pulp.

Lirona smiled kindly and half in embarrassment at the woman's kind words. She was grateful that she hadn't been asked to explain her plight in more detail, but that her point had been explained otherwise. She bowed her head thankfully towards Ary. "Thank you very much, ma'am. That's very reassuring," she said with a sincere smile. Lira had never seen a woman as intimidating as her teacher; she truster her to know what she was talking about when it came to self-defense.

The girl blinked in mild surprise when the woman began their lesson without warning, and quickly darted to the side of her room to put her purse down by the wall before continuing. She nodded with a concentrated look on her face as Arytiss gave instructions, although Lira couldn't even guess at what 'general attacking maneuvers' were. She thought briefly over the styles of martial arts that she'd seen, and then raised a hesitant hand. "Um, what about kung fu? Do you know that one? It- It's all about defending yourself, right? Could we do that?"

Ary hesitated, looking almost uncomfortable by her suggestion of kung fu. She supposed being banned from anything involving that had something to do with why the teacher was completely clueless about it. "Actually... Funny thing you should mention that... I don't to be terribly honest. A certain unfortunate event has caused me to be banned from ever learning it and the various other things related to it," she replied, not giving a reasoning as to why. Not that she remembered anyways.

"I was thinking more if someone were to grab you and leave you in a almost helpless position. Say someone grabbed you from behind and pinned you against the wall. Kung fu and general stuff like that would be useless... I think..." Ary continued, pondering. She had learned the hard way how to get out of such holds with her strength and energy fairly limited. Wasn't the easiest nor best years of her life, that was for sure.

Lirona automatically felt guilty for suggesting something when she saw her teacher's face fall. A hand went up to her mouth and she lowered her gaze in apology. She smiled gently at the woman and shook her head lightly, making a dismissive gesture. "Oh, well, that's fine then. Really, I just said the first thing that came into my head; I'd be happy to learn anything you could teach me." She hoped that she had reassured Ary that she wasn't disappointed or anything.

The spawn listened close to the woman's suggestion, nodding in agreement. Jake also quivered in excitement; he was eager to start doing things! This was the first class where he would probably be useful, and he was itching to begin. Lira giggled and stroked her tentacle soothingly before nodding up at Ary. "Okay, that sounds good. So... How would we start?"

To be honest, Ary didn't really have any feelings toward her lack of knowledge on kung-fu or the inability to learn it. Sure it was a pain, but then again it was a relief being one less thing she could teach and had to remember. Some days, it seriously felt like she knew way too much about that sort of stuff.

Pushing away musing thoughts on picking up another hobby for what had to be the millionth time since starting the job, Ary's attention returned itself to Lirona. "Well... I was thinking of showing you a general pose as to how someone might grab you, then a way to escape. Say they twisted your arm, or arms, back. Stepping back on their toes is a good way of distracting them," she replied, pondering each idea carefully before explaining.

"Or, if they're about as tall as you, you could smash your head back into theirs and break their nose. I'll tell you what, that'll cause most people to let go in alarm and pain." She didn't bother mentioning how amusing it was too. "Got all that?"

Lirona listened carefully to her instructor, making a mental picture in her head as the woman described the actions to try and see how they would work in an actual combat situation. Although part of her still doubted that she would be able to do such things so quickly if she ever got into trouble again, she committed them deeply into her memory and hoped that she'd be able to use them when the time arose. "Those both sound like great ideas. Very effective," she said with a smile.

Jake wiggled impatiently once again, and Lira laughed in mild surprise at the sudden action, looking apologetically at Ary. "I'm sorry, he's eager to do something physical for once. On that note, should we do anything, like, practice-wise? So, like, I don't know, I kind of sort of have the movements down before I have to use them for real?" she suggested hesitantly. To be honest, she had no idea if this was the correct thing to be saying or not. Maybe it was just better that she hear about the things and use them later, or by herself...

Ary paused, pondering such things. Well, it would probably help to teach the move then reenact it in a situation... Damn, she really needed to get things straight before teaching or speaking. “Yeah. Actually, I have a better idea. I’ll teach you basic maneuvers that work with almost every situation, then some more specific stuff. I’m sure you know some of the common weak spots like the stomach, eyes, nose, and for guys the groin, but there are a couple others,” she paused, making a mental list. “Such as the ears. Clapping your hands over them can create enough force, and a vacuum to trap said force, to pop their ears or even rupture the ear drum which isn’t exactly the most pleasant of feelings,” the woman continued with a smirk. “Any questions so far?”
