You do realize I was only kidding when I said I bet you couldn't pull off that stunt earlier, right? You nearly threw me off!
I did no such thing! And in any case I did pull it off and you are fine, so it is time to celebrate with some food.
You make it sound as if I wasn't going to let you feed. Well, get on then, the hunting grounds aren't too far from here.
It was late afternoon, and the pair had spent most of the day flying about freely and practicing different flight maneuvers on their own. After a couple of particularly daring stunts (the last of which Keela wasn't particularly happy with her dragon for having tried), they had decided it might be best to return to the Weyr for the day. Taith hadn't hunted in about a week anyway and was growing quite hungry.
The large Green landed outside of the feeding area just long enough for her rider to dismount before launching herself skyward again, the nearby herdbeasts scattering as they sensed their upcoming fate. Keela watched with mild amusement as the Green taunted her prey, running them about in circles while she swooped lower and lower from above. "Hey! Leave some meat on them for the other dragons!" she called out. Taith gave a small huff before finally selecting one and diving down on it. Some things never changed...

Gavrin was... well, he was lost. Not the physical sense of the word - he knew quite clearly where in the Weyr he was... it was simply that he'd somehow misplaced his favourite mug. It was always with him at meal time, along with Honey, and between dinner and now, he'd somehow lost the sharding thing. Looking confused and perplexed, he stood in the hall outside the Kitchens scratching his head as his brown flitted about him, churring worriedly, "Yes, yes, I know. It's here somewhere... but the where's the thing. Honey, help me look for it?" He'd looked up as he spoke, meaning to speak to the flit but his gaze fell on the incoming greenrider and he grinned, "Well, maybe you know. Have you seen a mug? It's black, chipped about the ring, and has a big blue dot on the side." He mimed the shape and poked the air then looked hopefully to Keela.

Leaving Taith to her hunting for a bit, Keela decided to head toward the kitchens to grab some food of her own. Just when she was nearly there, however, a tall guy halted her progress with the oddest inquiry... "Honey?" she echoed with a single-brow raised. "No, I can't say that I have. Just got in myself." Why would she have seen a mug? Seriously, some of the folks around the Weyr had the oddest troubles. "Try lookin where you last ate. Perhaps you left it there." Honey-colored eyes briefly strayed to the brown firelizard fluttering about. "Cute flit there by the way." Some people weren't very fond of the pests, but she didn't mind them much herself. In fact, she wouldn't at all mind getting one herself sometime should the opportunity arise really. They could be nuisances, but they also had their uses.

The boy blinked then pointed at at the brown firelizard, his expression one of mild concern. It should be obvious who Honey was.... "Honey." He smiled helpfully, hoping she understood now. "That's a shame... I already checked the table I was at. Could have sworn I had it on me..."
He turned away and paced a bit, "Mn? Honey? Yah, he's a sweet thing. I quite like him, just about useless in tracking things, though. If this is any indication. Wish my mug had a light on it, or a beeper. That'd make it easier to find...."
Gavrin turn back to the greenrider and grinned hugely, "Hey, you're going to eat, right? I'll come along, maybe I'll find my mug. If not, you wouldn't mind company would you? What's it like to ride a green?" His questions, well said pleasantly, were almost rapid fire, as if the boy's mind was working faster then he could voice his thoughts.

Ah, he had been referring to the firelizard before. Well, that certainly made more sense. Good to know that he wasn't one of the randomly flirtatious types. What on Pern was a 'beeper' though? Sheesh, this guy sure did talk a lot. "Do remember to breathe sometime in there," she remarked, walking past him and into the kitchen. She didn't directly answer his question of whether she would mind the company or not, for she figured he was the sort who would stick around regardless. "As for what it's like to ride a Green, I suppose the answer would vary a bit from rider to rider." She smirked ever so slightly at this as she recalled some of the various riders she had met in all of her time at the Weyr thus far. "I like it well enough. Taith is just as good as any of the larger colors-- if not better."
Definitely better, the Green said over their mental link, sounding almost affronted that her rider dared to even suggest otherwise. And anyone who says otherwise is simply a deadglow.
Keela's smirk widened a touch at the commentary. No argument there.

"Mn? I'm breathing fine. Why? Do I sound raspy? Ill?" He frowned and looked to his flit who simply chirped and settled on his head with a flick of its tail. Apparently not... which meant she was facetious. Huh.
Shaking his head, he walked along behind her, listening, "Well, don't you get more freedom? I mean... the browns and bronzes and golds... they all have so much responsibility. I don't know how they do it. I think green and blue riders are lucky that way." The ancientcrafter nodded, smiling pleasantly only to develop an expression of fascination as the characteristic distant look settled into Keela's features. "You're doing it. That talking in your head thing. How's that work? You just think at your dragon like you think at a flit?"
At the idea, the brown pushed off and blinked Between appearing out where the Green was feasting, buzzing by her in charming greeting, sending images back to Gavrin. "Chances of Impressing are slim, anyway. Honey says she's beautiful... I think he'd chase her if he could..." The boy laughed, the idea a ridiculous one.

Clearly this person didn't know how to take a hint. Was the 'breathe' remark too subtle for him? "I don't own a flit currently, so I can't really compare, but yes, we basically just communicate via thoughts. I haven't taught her how to speak aloud yet."
Thought-speak is much more efficient, Taith replied, glancing up from her meal to observe the small brown flit that had appeared. Hm, hello there. I always forget how tiny you things actually are. Sucks to be you.
Be nice, Taith, she reprimanded. It just wanted to say hello. "Hey, you never know, you could still easily Impress the next time there is a clutch." Although she hated to imagine how chatty the dragon would have to be to match with this rider. She poured some klah in a cup as she continued to speak. "And I'm quite sure that Honey would. Taith puts up a good chase." A very good chase she might add. The Green showed no mercy to those pursuing her, and only the best of the best would ever win the flight.

"I didn't think dragons could talk with sound..." He murmured, surprised but not disappointed. That was a fascinating thought!
The brown churred and settled down on the ground the carcass the green was feeding on and cocked his head to the side, mrring quietly. Something about the way she'd addressed him made the flit think of firestone and hot air, and he was confused. Did that mean she was upset? He churred again.
Gavrin shrugged, "Could but chances are not. I've seen the greens in Flight, it's quite the sight. They're so acrobatic and everything. I've always wondered what that's like... I mean, really, it's part of the reason the Weyr's so... free compared to the Holds, right? Can't be a bad thing." He smiled as he bounced to the table with klah pots and poured himself one - not that he needed it but it felt like the appropriate thing to do.

Keela couldn't help but roll her eyes. This guy was seriously dense. "The teaching her how to talk thing was a joke." Sheesh, it wasn't as if she was being even the slightest bit cryptic here.
Taith resumed her feeding, eying the tiny Brown as it churred at her. You'll have to communicate more clearly than that if you wish me to understand you. You are confused on something? She had to admit, he certainly was an adorable little thing. His coloring would look very nice on an actual dragon.
The Greenrider chuckled at his remark on Flights, and grabbed herself a couple of meatrolls to go with the klah. "Oh yes, Flights can be very enjoyable. Life here in the Weyr is far more preferable to the stuffy attitude of the Holds." She grimaced slightly as she thought back to her old life. No, she could never go back to that for all of the marks on Pern. Even if she were allowed to take Taith with her. They were free in the Weyr, and she quite enjoyed it.

"I know... but the idea is quite fantastic. I wonder if anyone's tried yet..." He replied, waving her off.
The brown mrred at the green, tilting his head this way and that before he blinked Between and appeared a little above her head, circling down to settle on her shoulder. He offered an image of firestone in question to her chittering as he looked down at her meal.
Gavrin grabbed a slice of meat and some veggies that he piled onto a plate and caught up to Keela, "Yeah, I guess the Holds are stuffy. What's the bets of part of being a Rider? I've asked lots of people but they all have different answers - there's so much to experience, I guess, that opinions vary wildly." Gnawing on his portion, Gavrin took a seat and looked curious up at the Greenrider, clearly expecting an answer.

Firestone? she questioned back, beginning to become almost as confused as the firelizard. I see no firestone about. Only food. Speaking of food, she had pretty much finished off all of the good parts of this meal. It was time to take down another herdbeast. If you don't want to be thrown off I'd suggest you hold on tight, was all the warning that Honey got before the Green leapt skyward again, flying after the frightened prey below to select her second kill.
"The best part?" Keela echoed as she found a place to sit with her food and drink. "Hard to select just one thing really. I love it all. Hm.... I guess if I had to choose I might say the freedom," she replied with a slight shrug before taking a sip of klah. Although really, for her the best part was Taith herself. She could not envision any future without the Green, and the pair made for quite the formidable duo.

The flit twittered and rumbled, his expression sad as he sent images to Gavrin who also sighed, "Tell your dragon, she reminds him of firestone. That's what he's trying to say..." It ought to be obvious, shouldn't it? Firelizards thought in images and sensations...
With a bugle of disapproval, the brown swept away when the green leaped into the air for another meal and tried his absolute hardest to keep up with the much bigger dragon. It was particularly comedic and when he ran out of steam he sort of fluttered like a leaf and laid out on a rock with a puff of a sigh, worn out.
"Freedom?" This caught Gavrin's interest and he paused in his eating to look at her, "Yeah... but the Weyr itself is still pretty free. What's freedom for a rider?"

Keela had to chuckle at th firestone remark. "Will do." Taith, the firelizard is trying to tell you that your remind him of firestone.
I do, do I? the green replied, puffing up inwardly with pride. Well then, perhaps he is more sensible than I had assumed. Some might not see such a thing as a compliment, but to Taith it was. Firestone was hard, tough, and allowed dragons to spout forth great flames. She rather liked such a thing being applied to herself.
Once she had taken down her second kill, she looked about briefly to see where the brown had gotten to. Ah, there he was. Told ya to hang on, didn't I? she remarked with an amused whirl to her eyes. If you can manage to make it over here, I might be willing to share some of this meat with you. The flit was much in her good favors now.
"True, the Weyr is free, but flight itself is another level of freedom altogether," Keela replied. "Also being able to go near anywhere on Pern in a matter of a few seconds is pretty nice." granted, you had to know where you were going first, but it was certainly a much more efficient means of travel that travel by land or sea.
