V’al had no interest in being social after the hatching feast. Those who weren’t new riders seemed intent on getting drunk, and those who were were either mingling or pampering their dragons. After noting his room assignment, V’al left and took Lerath for oiling and a second chat in the woods. When he came in it was late and dark, and he went to bed without rousing his bunkmate. In the morning the other weyrling was gone, and the day passed normally. Until he returned in the evening anyway.
He paused inside the door and walked slowly to the second bed, his eyes trained on the floor. There were pants there, of a feminine cut, and…
He nudged them with a foot to see the bit of linen under, then swiftly turned away, cheeks flushing. His movements stiff, he retreated to his bed and knelt, organizing his things he’d thrown there with stiff, jerky movements. “A girl,” he muttered in disbelieving whisper.

A young girl's piping voice comes through the doorway. "C'mon Dynith! I need to get back and clean up my area. You rushed us out so fast for your bath and oiling that I didn't have time to pick anything up! The Weyrling Master will have both our hides if we don't do something." There's a slight pause where presumably Dynith responds then a soft giggle.
Optheli comes around the corner and gets several paces in the room before realizing someone is in there. Her dragon hard on her heels nearly runs into her. "Oh! Hi, you must be my bunkmate." She gives him a grin, before moving to her side and gathering up some of her clothing. "I'm Optheli, and my green is Dynith. It's a pleasure to meet you and I'm sure we'll get along great."

V’al rose as he heard the approaching, a few unfolded shirts in hand. “Hi.” He said, stepping aside though there was plenty of room in the room. He squeezed the shirts in his shifting hands as she and the green entered. “Greetings to you and yours.” Another pause while he tried to watch her without staring. His thoughts circled around the memory that he’d changed clothes last night. He’d known his roommate had been asleep then, but now it bothered him.
“My Lerath is out exploring the halls. He should be back soon. Sorry I didn’t… see you last night when I came in. Did I wake you?” Shards, he better not have. It was hard enough not to wince already.

She flashes another smile. "Thanks. Dynith don't be shy and say hello. I'd like to meet Lerath when he gets back." Her head tilts as she considers his question. "That's alright, we got back pretty late so you must have come in after us. The glows were dimmed, so I'm not surprise you didn't see us. By the way, what is your name?" Optheli looks at him curiously. "I don't know.... maybe just a little bit. I'm a light sleeper." Another smile crosses her lips in reassurance.
She bends to pick up clothing and tossing it onto her bed to be sorted. "I'm so sorry I left the place in such a mess. She rushed me out of here as soon as I had something on. The Weyrling Master hasn't come by has he?" A couple undergarments got tossed onto the bed.
Dynith ducks her head but gives the required greeting in a trill.

“It’s V’al now,” he answered. Giving up on cleaning, he sat on the edge of his bed. At least she hadn’t woken at an embarrassing moment, it seemed.
“No, I don’t think so. We’ll probably get a couple of days to adjust before they start getting on our backs about everything.” When she flung her undergarments about he adroitly moved his glance to the side and frowned stiffly at the corner of the room. Thankfully, Lerath’s arrival kept him from making a remark.
The little dramatically-colored blue entered the room with a curious creeling noise. His wings, as they always were when he moved about, were half-flared as if for balance and nearly got him hung in the doorway. After pausing to butt his head affectionately against V’al’s leg, he turned on the little green with whirling eyes and crooned a greeting. Is this yours? She seems nice.

"V'al. Ah that honorific changes everything doesn't it? And congrats on Impressing. I'm Optheli." She smiled happily.
She exhaled in relief. "Thank goodness. I think I'm going to need it. This is certainly different than what I'm use to." Quickly, yet, efficiently the laundry got parceled out and put away. "Oh is that him? Very pretty." She giggled softly as the blue nearly caught himself on the door.
Dynith bobs her head to the blue. 'Yes this is Mine. She's always happy. Yours seems embarrassed a little. Why?'

“Thank you.” His dragon’s fouling wings became an excuse to rise and busy himself without looking at the things spread out on Optheli’s bed. “He’s got something against keeping his wings closed.” As Lerath turned to the little green he manually folded and tucked the frail wings into his body. “You’ll have to fold them when you’re in here,” he said in a low voice, his expression and tone bland but his handling ever-delicate. “When you and Dynith start growing there won’t be much room.” Despite his efforts, the dark wings, though mostly folded, were still stubbornly lifted a few centimeters from Lerath’s lithe body.
Lirith seemed to ignore this attention and rolled an eye back at His before returning to Dynith. He is always bothered by something, though he is at least calm. When he asked V’al if there was something amiss, the boy frowned. The response wasn’t direct words, but more of an impression of linens, Optheli’s sweet face, and her rounded hips. Lerath’s eyes whirled in amusement. I do not think he expected your Optheli to be a girl.
V’al struggled to rein in his frowning. The two dragons were obviously talking, and he thought it was about him. Would there be any privacy here? He rubbed a hand across his mouth thoughtfully until it became a neutral line. “Do you know how long it takes for a dragon to start flying on their own?”

"Seems he just likes his space. I can't really say I blame him. Wouldn't you want space after being cooped up in an egg for so long?" She head tilts in an amused way. With the bed cleared, Optheli flopped down and watched him tucking the wings in. "Don't worry, I don't think Dynith will take up much space."
She glanced towards her own little green. Dynith had managed to curl herself up as small as she would go. It seemed to her that the green was just shy. Well she can't be shy all the time if we're going to be living together. It should wear off soon as she gets comfortable with them.
Optheli giggled. "I was a trader before this. Don't know anything about dragons, so I couldn't say. I'm sure they'll tell us when it gets close to the time." She smiled reassuringly at the boy. "Are you eager to learn flying?"
'That is unfortunate, but good he is calm.' Dynith swiveled her head to look at Hers before looking back at Lerath again. 'Why wouldn't Mine be female though?' She seemed confused. Why wouldn't Optheli be a girl?

“As for flying, I don’t mind waiting a bit, but I’d like to see Lerath aloft.” When the time came, he knew he would be proud of his friend for that. “But they’re going to grow on the way to that and when it gets cramped…” He made a not at Lerath’s cocked wings. Then he noticed the green’s hunched position. Was that his fault? “Have I said something?” he asked, nodding at the curled dragonet with a taunt expression.
Lerath’s eyes whirled curiously at the question. He didn’t understand the question himself to be honest. Mine, Dynith and I do not understand what bothers you about Hers. She seems healthy and kind.
V’al tried not to wince at the question. ~I’ve never lived with a girl before. I’ll get used to it.~
~You said you lived with your mother in the Hold before.~ When his rider claimed it was a different sort of thing, Lerath decided to pursue the line of questioning later and relayed what he’d learned to Dynith.

Optheli smiled. "Flying does sound like it will be fun. I never considered it before. I'll make sure Dynith gets all the support she needs." She considered the tense wings on the blue. "Hmmm, maybe when he gets bigger they might get in the way. Surely he'll have to close them to get in. I wouldn't worry about it until you have to. He might solve the problem for you." She tried to give the boy a reassuring smile. No one wanted something to be wrong with their dragon.
She blinked and glanced at Dynith again. "Her? Nah, she's just trying to take up as little space as possible and remain unnoticed. I think she's kinda shy of you." To the dragon, "you'll have to relax at some point. You might as well start now." They had been assigned bunks so the blue surely wouldn't mind Dynith taking up a little room.
Dynith turns her head and her eyes whurled worriedly. She wanted the blue to like her and she didn't want to intrude on his space. She had to consider the relayed info for a moment before shaking her head slightly. 'I do not know. I will bespeak Mine. She might be able to help. Mine, Lerath says His is not use to living with a girl. What does this mean?'
Optheli flushed a little at that tidbit from her dragon. "Um... V'al... Dynith said you weren't use to living with a girl. You don't mind being bunked with me do you?" She looked at him worriedly. "I'm sorry about my stuff. I'm use to sharing a wagon with my brother and father. I didn't even stop to think."

Lerath swung his head in V’al’s direction, and boy suddenly felt himself the center of attention. Not prone to embarrassment, he nevertheless looked put off by the changed subject. “I guess there’s no keeping secrets with them around,” he said, glancing at the dragons. Though disturbed, his eyes lacked accusation. “Even for politeness’s sake. I won’t lie then: I’m hold bred and I haven’t roomed with a girl before, so no, I’m not used to it. But don’t act like I’m going to take it out on you.” He did scowl a bit then at the trader girl, as if he found her caution bothersome. Rooming with the other sex will be the least difficult thing to get accustomed to – so long as you don’t get into a tizzy over it.” It occurred to him, belatedly, that his behavior might not encourage her to relax, but this only bothered him more and he sat on the edge of his bed in a funk of displeasure. Lerath’s wings broke from their tenuous folding as if on cue and he gave V’al such a puzzled look that the boy’s aggravation dipped off several degrees and he scratched the dragon’s eye ridge.

Optheli gave a soft giggle. "No, I wouldn't think so. If you want my bet, it'd be they can be as bad as the worst hold gossip. However, I can also see where there might be an advantage to it." She tilted her head at him to see if followed her thought.
"Well I do hope that you'll tell me if something I do makes you unhappy." She grinned to show her next words were meant to be teasing, "if I suspect you haven't told me something I'll have Dynith ask Lerath." Privately she wondered about the holder's customs. How could they be so different from traders? Perhaps it was just because most of her life she'd only had her father and brother. No sisters or female relative after her mother left when she was three.
She smiled as she saw the wings come out. "He really is cute when he does that you know." Optheli meant what she said, and wasn't just trying to buddy up to him. "It reminds me of childish worry."
Dynith watched Lerath flare his wings out again and crooned comfortingly. When the blue got his eyeridges scratched, she turned her head to receive the same from Hers.

She could have her dragon find out about things he didn’t feel like answering, even if she were joking about it at the moment. More importantly, anyone with a dragon could do much the same. He scratched the dragon’s head and wasn’t able to imagine the dragon lying well. They’d have to talk about this at some point. He didn’t feel Optheli was a real threat, and in fact couldn’t directly imagine why any rider at the weyr would spy on him through his dragon, but he was an intensely private person and it was the thought that bothered him. He sighed and put the thought aside for now. “Cute, huh?” He glanced at Dynith. “Didn’t you Impress from the stands? What do the traders you were with think?”

"Well if something was wrong with me, I'd hope Dynith would tell someone. Would that be alright with you? I mean, if I'm in trouble can Dynith come to you for help? Don't feel bad if you say no, I'm sure I could find someone else." Optheli said in a rush. She hoped she hadn't upset him too much by listening to her dragon gossip. Her arms wrapped around her green's neck and she rubbed her cheek against the soft hide.
"Well, I think he is." She blinked and smiled, "yeah, I did." Optheli gets a dreamy look as she remembers the moment the little green came to stand under her and looked up. "Oh, they were really happy. My dad and the caravan master took it all with good stride. And my brother.... well he Impressed from the stands too, so what really can he say?" She giggled. "You should have seen the look on his face! He looked like a stranded fish when the dragon sat down right next to him."
Dynith half closes her eyes and several lids with contentment at the attention.

“If you get in trouble?” V’al actually looked a little amused at the idea. “You don’t seem the type to get in trouble, but sure.” He nodded, accepting the idea. He wasn’t one to take on the troubles of others, but Optheli barely even seemed a ‘other.’ She seemed too naive to start any trouble except perhaps through foolhardiness. More likely the only trouble she would find would be the sort to stumble over her and he wouldn’t mind interjecting in that case. “Sure, just let me know.”
V’al smirked a bit at the story. “Pretty lucky then, the both of you Impressing.”
