Kadayon gave a soft sigh as he rested his chin on the breakfast table. He felt too fidgety to eat now, the sight of the food making him feel more ill than satisfied. Besides, he didn't like it when the cook put more than one type of pancake on the same plate. He hated when she mixed food like that; she'd contaminated all the good pancakes.

But that wasn't the most important of his worries.

His mother would be back soon, with the rest of the Benden riders who had been ferrying around healers. They're gone all the way to Trine, apparently, to have a look at these so-called mutant dragons. Everyone had heard about them. Though he doubted that his mother had actually met a mutant – Yvoth may have but he didn't want to talk to her - he was sure she'd have also kinds of stories to tell and the youth was admittedly curious. What would she have to say about this strange Weyr and its bizarre dragons?

A sudden cry of delight came from behind Kayadon. His mother followed, sitting backwards on the bench with her back to the table so she could pull the boy into a swift embrace without having to get her long legs over the bench. “Oooh, my boy, I’ve missed being home and seeing you!” she sang, smiling dizzily. She wore her riding leathers still, and her hair was tousled, but the leathers were embossed and dyed a dark shade of blue that matched the ribbons holding her hair into some shape that made the tresses still look appealing. She was rather proud of herself for having said goodbye to him before heading to Trine, and for now greeting him again so promptly on the return. It saved her the mother’s guilt that inflicted her when these sort of details slipped her mind.

Had the boy been paying a little more attention to the world around him rather than his teenage woes he would have noticed K'la's arrival long before she made her presence known. As it stood, however, he had been far too busy moping and at her cry he jumped clear out of his chair. Thankfully, his mother was already embracing him, soothing ruffled feathers as he tried to slow his heart rate down just a little bit. Kadayon clearly wasn't very good at dealing with surprise attacks.

"Mum! You're back!" He responded with a fleeting hug, letting her go as she pulled back and smiled at him. Judging by her appearance she must have just got back. "Did you have a nice trip? Did they treat you nice?"

“Oh, goodness no. Well, it might have been alright, except one of our men made a fool of himself fighting that crimson dragon’s rider over there and his bronze killer her dragon. Didn’t you hear about that?” She pressed on without waiting for reply. “It was dreadful, of course, but after that the rest of us were treated so coldly you’d have thought we’d planned it.” She shook her head, curls tumbling.

No? No?

The boy's face scrunched up instantly when his mother stated that they hadn't treated them well. It seemed awfully unfair to let riders and Healers come and then treat them poorly. This inter Weyr meeting was for the betterment of Pern – or at least, so he'd been told – and for the other Weyrs to be inhospitable seemed downright rude, not to mention wrong. Still, fighting dragons? What a waste. He'd heard the crimson ones could clutch.

"Why would they suspect you of planning it? How do they know their rider didn't start it? Besides, they should have been hospitable." Kadayon bit fiercely into a meatroll, brushing the flakes neatly off of his fingers. "Well, at least you're back now. Did you eat?"

K’la nodded amicably at his rush of questions and made to answer in a rush when he paused, though his last query set her back a moment. She laughed suddenly, sounding half surprised. “Oh, not yet.” She swung her legs over the bench and dragged an unused plate in front of her. A bit more delicately as she remembered her manners through her flurry of emotions, she began picking out bits of food for her place. “They were suspicious of all sorts of things. Mostly, I think it was due to their not understanding what the healers were about prodding those clutches and all. I hardly had any notion myself, but that didn’t affect their opinions.” She frowned critically at a meatroll she’d almost grabbed and adroitly took the one next to it instead. She cheered at her next bit of news, grinning with forbidden knowledge. “Oh, you should have seen that crimson’s clutch hatch. Do you know they really do whack the dud shells with a shovel? It looks most absurd.”

Watching his mother eat certainly perked Kadayon's appetite and he helped himself to something else as she started her breakfast. It was easier to eat when he didn't scrutinize his food, and he could forget about the cook's inability to keep food separate by focusing on K'la's stories.

The boy gaped at the admission that they actually hit dragon eggs with shovels, looking clearly scandalized. They had been told in their lessons to be careful with the dragons while they were still in their eggs and here other Weyrs were whacking them with shovels? It made him a little queasy. "They don't hatch all of them like that, right? It sounds so violent." Kadayon shivered. "What happens if they hit one with a shovel and it's not actually a dud? Or if the dragon's not ready to hatch yet?"

Despite his repulsion at the idea of smacking eggs he couldn't help his morbid curiousity.

“Not all,” she assured. K’la, despite her hunger, ate in small bites befitting her station. “They wait until after the healthy ones hatch, and then their weyrwoman comes out with a glorified shovel and just whacks the ones that are left. I was distracted at the Hatching and don’t remember if there were any true duds among them, but when they happen it’s supposed to be all egg-stuff inside when the shell is broken.” She shrugged at the gross subject. “And there are more of the runts in crimson clutches it seems. I saw some of them at the feast. Very weak and small, they were. Many of those that Impressed them carried them around when their legs wore out.”

The boy shuddered at mental image of a dud egg's insides sliding out onto the sands and slowly pushed his plate away. It certainly didn't take much to ruin Kadayon's appetite, but talking about unformed dragon embryos and shovels seemed to do the trick just fine. "They're lucky they don't bash any on the head and mess them up I'm not sure I'd like a dragon that was deaf in one ear knob or lost an eye in a shovel accident." Of course, whoever bonded to that pitiful creature would think it was all worth it, but Kadayon liked to think he could avoid Impression "weird" dragons just be sheer willpower.

"Why do they hatch them if they're so weak? Wouldn't they just die?" He frowned as he reached for a piece of fruit, eyeing it critically before taking a careful bite. "Do they die a lot? These dud dragons?"

K’la hadn’t really thought of that. She wondered if it were possible to damage the dragons through all that thick egg and protective membrane. Probably, if the shovel wielder weren’t careful. She looked vaguely thoughtful as she nibbled at a pastry. “You know, I’m not sure? I know they get tired very easily, anyway. All the ones I saw at the hatching were well formed beasties, if small. I know if they get over exerted it can be very dangerous for the runts, but I’m not sure they actually die that frequently.”

"It's weird," Kadayon concluded after another bite of his fruit. "Are we going to start doing it here? Bashing the eggs? I think I might be sick if they do." The thought of having to watch their esteemed Weyrleaders bash dragon eggs in with a shovel of all tools was definitely enough to upset his delicate stomach. He'd have to remember to avert his eyes lest he actually empty his stomach on the Hatching Sands. Nerves were bad enough as it was.

There was a moment of silence as though the boy was considering his next question very carefully before he asked in what he thought sounded like his best nonchalant voice, "Did Yvoth enjoy the trip?" Though he was addressing his mother he kept his eyes fixated on his fruit.

“Yvoth? Well, mostly, until that accident of course. It’s a bit strange, but she doesn’t seem to have much of an opinion about the atypicals. She’ll talk to most anyone really, until the hostilities went up. The Trine dragons wouldn’t speak to her then, the poor dear.” Her face reflected distress over the memory, then darkened slightly. “And the funeral was appalling. Malvren showed in force and riders and dragons alike made a very open but unspoken stand against it. Completely unnecessary since we were scheduled to leave shortly anyway, and poor Yvoth. She does not bear up well under resentment. I would have taken her back Between to Benden in a moment to spare her if I could have.”

So there were dragons shunning dragons then. It was a low blow for sure. These younger Weyrs weren't exactly setting themselves up for any favours from the older ones which was never good. What if one day they needed help? Somehow, he doubted that Benden would jump to the rescue of the people who had treated them and their dragons poorly. All this bad blood between Weyrs wasn't going to end well, he was sure of it. Hopefully he would be away from it all when things got messy.

"There was a funeral?" Kadayon's brows furrowed as he pillowed his head on his hands. "Tell me about it." Morbid curiousity at its finest.

“It was for the rider of that crimson that died,” she said, freeing her hands of food and utensils. A rapt audience eliminated the need for food. She explained the funeral in haphazard detail. The burning ship – oh they’d been by the water – and the Malvren junior riders that had been specially taught to go Between. Oh, and Masterhealer Givon’s curious ego and poor poor Yvoth. And thank the First Shell for S’raid. He’d been the only one of them that seemed comfortable – though she wouldn’t have minded it if he’d been a hair less amiable.

By the time she’d let off steam about the aggravating funeral and it’s indignities (though she really had few examples of those), the remains of her breakfast had gone cold. “I don’t envy our weyrleader and woman having to sort and settle things, but I think there’s little to do now except let things calm down on their own and hope whatever Givon found was useful.”

Kadayon sat up a little straighter to listen, ever bit of him an eager audience. As his mother spoke he tried to picture the events as they happened. He’d never been to a funeral before, not even for normal Weyrfolk, but he certainly had a very vivid imagination. A burning ship and the dragons of two Weyrs, all showing up just to honour one crimson rider. They almost acted as though a Master craftsman had died, though perhaps to them the crimsons were as important as their goldriders. Or perhaps it had been a statement, or maybe even a threat. Kadayon squashed that thought instantly and returned to poking at his food. A threat. As if they would threaten Benden.

When his mother turned the topic to the Weyrleaders, the boy nodded his head in agreement. Dealing with a dead rider was one thing; dealing with a murdered rider was something entirely different. At the mention of Givon, however, Kadayon perked up. “So he did find something? It’s just, some people are saying he just went there for a vacation and didn’t really find anything, you know.” He added the last bit quickly as if to clarify his earlier question.
