Down by the lakeside a great Brown dragon lay, wings stretched out half-way on either side as he soaked in the rays of the afternoon sun. His eyes were contemplative as he stared out at the great expanse of water before him, a crimson firelizard laying comfortably atop of his head and sunning herself as well. It was just the previous day that the funeral for Alumanth and her rider had been held, and in a few days' time Trine would finally be rid of the Benden Healers and riders. But what to make of them? Tereth certainly trusted the Masterhealer no more than he had before, and that feeling seemed to be mutual with everyone he encountered. The man was far to arrogant and meddlesome for his own good. But the riders? He had thought ill of them ever since Alumanth's death, but the funeral had softened him toward the small group just a bit. They had all behaved perfectly well, and that one Bronze seemed to be rather popular with many of the young dragonets. The other's gentleness had surprised him a bit even. It gave him much to think on...
Ruby let out a welcoming trill from above and Tereth lifted up his head to see who was approaching. Ah, it was the blind harper. He had not seen the other since the Hatching (at least that he could remember). Eyes whirling a calm and peaceful green, the Brown waited patiently as the other approached.

n** and Squeak were having some well earned time off, and occasionally updating him about all the fun they were having. As he was still feeling somewhat subdued from yesterday, however, Tor could only smile very faintly when they told him about how amazingly amazing they were for catching a tunnel snake together...
Still, it seemed his mood was about to be lifted; Eldest crooned and drew his attention to something in their field of view that his master didn't seem to have noticed: big brown?
"Tereth!" Tor changed course to hurry towards the large dragon; he had been wanting to see him ever since the hatching, but hadn't had a chance what with the feast and then the funeral and everything. As he came to a halt before the brown he beamed and swept a bow. "Gentle dragon," he said, still grinning widely, "I am forever in your debt." There was no way to describe how he had felt about being able to watch the newest clutch of dragons hatch, newest two clutches that was... Poor Alumanth. At least her children were beautiful, and had Impress safely.

Green orbs whirled a bit brighter at Tor's expression and words. It was my pleasure, dear Harper, he replied, pulling his wings in comfortably so that there would be more free space about him. You owe me nothing. With as much pleasure as he often gained from listening to Harpers sing and play, it was the least he could do to give one equal joy. and it truly was a hatching that was not to be missed. To the flit he said, It is good to see you again as well.
From atop of his head Ruby trilled again, watching the two visitors curiously. She had not seen them before, so how did they know Tereth? Did they know her human as well? The crimson fluttered down to meet them both more closely. She reflected the image of Tor's scarf in a questioning manner. Why were his eyes covered? Didn't that make it hard to see?

Tor gave a delighted laugh as the red firelizard swooped down towards him, and extended a feeling of welcome to the little creature. "Well, aren't you a beauty?" he commented, reaching up a hand to scritch her belly. A lovely vivid crimson, he did love atypical flitts, though he had to admit that this was partially because they were rare and owing one (especially a crimson) was quite prestigious. He wouldn't swap his trio of course, but if he could add one more flitt to his collection it would be black, silver, or crimson if he could possibly arrange that.
Eldest too greeted the newcomer, giving a deep (well, deep for a flitt), croon as she approached; she was quite lovely! The harper saw just fine, he communicated when quizzed; he showed him the way, that was his job, and he did it well, and he was happy that he could help his person.
Tor chuckled as his brown companion crooned at the female firelizard; usually Eldest was too busy looking after him to notice females, but he seemed rather taken with this one. "What's her name?" he asked of Tereth. "I'm assuming she belongs to Yours?"

Ruby trilled pleasantly as her belly was scratched, rather enjoying the positive attention. She was rather intrigued by what the brown communicated though. He showed his person stuff? That seemed a bit odd to her, but hey, if it worked then all was well.
Her name is Ruby, Tereth replied, watching with mild amusement as the crimson warmed up to them. Yes, she belongs to Mine. A bit of an accidental acquisition actually, but one that has worked out well. At this point said flit began to croon and trill a simple little tune-- the same tune she had demonstrated for Eltimioth and Hers actually-- and Tereth's amusement increased. She also seems to have taken quite a liking to musical endeavors. There almost seemed to be more meaning behind his words than what appeared on the surface, but the Brown didn't elaborate.

Eldest gave a mental shrug; that was his life, that was what he knew about. There wasn't much room in his small mind for understanding any more than his job, and of course how to have fun when he did have time when he wasn't showing his human the world. He liked to chase tunnel snakes, and swim, and hear harpers.
"Ruby," Tor echoed with a smile, "but apt and beautiful, and of course, it's always a pleasure to meet another music lover!..." But he hadn't tracked the brown dragon down to talk about flitts. He'd intended to find both rider and dragon really, but only because dragons did not usually bespeak other humans; given that Tereth seemed happy to honor him so, the dragon could easily speak both for himself and for His.
"Tereth," the harper said slowly after a few moments, "I have something to ask of you... It may be a little presumptious of me but... well... I was wondering if you might share future hatchings with me, as you did this one. Having seen one I... I find it hard to imagine going back to only hearing." There. He'd said it. He knew there were bigger, more serious things to talk about, things that affected the whole Weyr, that could affect the whole world, but he was just one little harper; was it so wrong for him to keep thinking of personal issues in the face of bigger ones?

I can understand that, Tereth replied, unable to imagine what it might be like to not be able to see something as spectacular as a Hatching. I will be glad to show them to you. Although, you may have to remind me when the time come around again, as I likely won't remember. Ah, dragon's memory. A gift and a curse all in one. At least the humans could remember such things for them.

"Thank you, Tereth, thank you more times than there are stars in the sky!" Tor beamned and moved closer to the brown, only narrlowly avoiding the faux pas of hugging somebody else's dragon... What would it have been like, he wondered? Would he have made a good rider, and what would his dragon have been like? He didn't regret being a harper in the least, but he had to wonder what it would be like to feel that bond with another creature.
"Anyway," Tor cleared his throat, regaining a little decorum, "yes, believe me I shall be sure to remind you... Now I must do something for you in return," he went on, his eyebrows knitting as he pondered... Well, it was a bit obvious really; he was a harper and Tereth loves music. "I shall write a song," he decided aloud, "a song just for you. Composition isn't my speciality of course, but I'm sure I can rope in some help if I get stuck!"

The brown watched on curiously as Tor moved closer before seeming to stop himself. He wasn't one who minded touching, so it bemused him somewhat when the Harper changed his mind. I should hardly think a song is necessary, he replied, both humbled and flattered by the decision. Listening to your practice and playing brings more than enough joy for me.
Ruby trilled again and fluttered back to her perch atop of Tereth's head. It was comfy up there. At least until her human returned.
The dragon paused briefly, seeming to listen to something before remarking, Mine is on his way.

"Well I know it isn't necessary," Tor said with a grin, "but I should like to, both for the sake of thanking you, and for the sake of creating a beautiful piece of music." What should it be about? Not the dragon himself, he didn't know the great creature well enough to do him justice for one. Yes, not about the brown, rather for him, written to please him... He had been so lost in pondering what this song ought to be like that for some moments he didn't register Tereth's other words. Eventually, however, the message seeped through.
"Oh? Really? Wonderful," the Harper beamed, "I haven't seen him in a while..." Maybe the rider would be able to shed some light on when the riders from Benden would leave. From what he'd heard it ought to be soon, but it never hurt to try to find out more.

The creation of new music is always a wonderful thing, Tereth agreed, more pleased with that reasoning. The brown was perfectly content to lay there and wait while the Harper lost himself to his thoughts of music. That was an easy enough thing to do after all.
"Good afternoon, Harper!" S'ren greeted amiably as he approached. It certainly had been quite a while since he had seen the other, but it was difficult to forget the harper-flit pairing. "Tor, isn't it? How have you been?"
Ruby let out a happy chirrup at the sight of her human, and immediately jumped off of Tereth's head and through Between. She reappeared directly beside the rider and was quick to land on his shoulder and cuddle into him affectionately. " heart " Her eyes whirled a happy green-blue.

"It certainly is; good afternoon S'ren!" Tor greeted the rider with a smile in return as Eldest twisted his head around to regard the approaching human. "I've been fantastically well thank you, thanks to Tereth I have experienced the wonder of a hatching, and those riders from Benden will be leaving soon... The few who remain haven't done anything wrong themselves, I know, but their presence here causes an atmosphere I don't like."
Honestly, though they hadn't done wrong, he actually didn't like the Benden folk himself. He couldn't help associating them with the bronze rider who's dragon had caused so much pain. He knew it wasn't fair, that it was wrong of him, but he couldn't help the way he felt. He could, however, refrain from speaking ill of them to S'ren.

"Ah, Tereth showed you the Hatching, did he? I am glad for you." That explained why the brown hadn't spoken to him much at all during that time as compared to the usual commentary that they shared during Hatchings. "Benden's return home will be a relief to many, I am sure." He wasn't about to outright speak ill of the remaining folk either, but it was no secret that their presence brought about much antagonism and stress to the Weyr. Too much had happened for that not to be so.
Even Tereth's eyes whirled with discontent at the mention of Benden, though the coloring was not nearly as strong as it had been before. I am not fond of that Healer, he said plainly to the both of them, though he gave no opinion on the rest of the company. Prior to the funeral he'd have said (and actually had said) 'out with them all,' but now... He wasn't sure.

"No... No I can't say that I am either," Tor agreed with a shake of his head. "He was far too interested in our eggs, and despite his rudeness, despite all the harm Benden's presence here has caused, he won't even tell us what he discovered... What I wouldn't give for a look at those notes." It was tempting to send one or more of his flitts to steal the healer's huge sheaf of notes, but he didn't want to cause a diplomatic incident. More to the point, he didn't want to be in trouble personally; he didn't deal well with people shouting at him.
"Perhaps once he's collated everything and drawn some conclusions he'll send them on to us," the harper suggested without much conviction in his voice. Benden had no interest in helping Trine, or even doing something to show it was sorry for what its bronze had done.

"I'm sure we will all find out his discovery, one way or another," he remarked. If the masterhealer really had figured out what it was that was causing the fertility issue, a secret that large would be impossible to keep hidden for very long.
Whatever the case is, we are fortunate not to be affected, Tereth remarked. Trine and Malvren have held strong and true. Unlike the older Weyrs who, for whatever reason, were slowly fading away. Given their role in protecting Pern, this was definitely not a good thing. Despite all of the old Weyrs' prejudices against them, it would be best if they remained strong and well themselves.
