Hello Gaians! I watched the first few episodes of the Three Kings saga the other day, and unfortunately didn't get to finish the saga (so this argument might be flawed.) But I noticed something a little strange about Makai; from what I remember, there's never a scene that takes place in the Makai at night.

Now, like I said, I only watched up to Hiei's year, and then I got busy and haven't watched the end of it (in three or four years and that was at two in the morning) so I might have missed a scene. But from what I remember, it's never night in Makai! When the boys go to Maze Castle (which may or may not actually be in Makai, since they make a big deal out of never having been there before at the end of the Chapter Black saga) the sky is cloudy and a purply red color. It's the same when they get into Makai with Sensui, and again when Yusuke goes to meet Raizen. It seems like Makai is a sort of limbo, without a change in day and night.

Another reason I wonder this is because when Yusuke went with those three servants of Raizen's to the castle, they hear Raizen's stomach growling and one of them mentions that his stomach rumbles at breakfast, lunch, and dinner (which doesn't make sense to me because wouldn't it rumble continuously after so long without food?) and that's what they use to mark the passing of time. Well, if there was a nighttime, why wouldn't you mark the passing of time by that?

(It now occurs to me that it was nighttime when Raizen met the human doctor in the flashback, but if that was before the barrier then it makes sense that they would be in human world, where there is night. By the way, was there such a thing as Makai before, or was it created when humans and demons were separated?)

One more aside theory; it's possible that the plants in demon world are so different and vicious because they feed off energy instead of/along with sunlight. They suck energy from the atmosphere or passing demons to grow and as a result become more "wild" than plants in the human world!

Wow, I never thought of that. It does get gloomy, but I don't remember any nighttimes either. neutral Even when Yusuke is going to Raizen's and they run for three days I don't remember any nights then either ... or a sun or a moon even!

Well, keep in mind, it is a separate dimension...so the basic notions that are law in our world could be completly diferent there...

I agree with Akasha.

I would also venture my opinion that the constant dark skies are to set the tone for Makai - in other words, they aren't due to an actual lack of day and night, but rather merely a way to portray Makai as a dark, gloomy place - a contrast, if you will, to the sunnyness of the human world. Throughout most of the series, demons are villains, the enemy. It would make sense that their world seems as ominous as they are.

Interesting observation, InkMistress! : D

It also leads me to question how the demons tell a passing of a day, then. (Since they mention that Yusuke had been unconscious for a week after his fight with Yomi.)

Well, heading back to my earlier statement, it's a separate dimension, they may have some cryptic way that not even YYH's creator Togashi-sensei could have imagined. Also, remember when Raizen was still alive? The rumbling of his stomach at mealtimes helped mark time passage for his men.
Therefore, the demons possibly utilize a means of time keeping identical, yet different to, those of us humans. Uh-oh, that was a lecture...sorry about that! sweatdrop
I think too much...*laughs*
