It seems every day I sit down for a while and think about where I want to go with music, and what I want to sound like. I can never figure out what music I want to make exactly. Anyone else feel like this?

Yeahhh, I do that a lot. I go through my phases constantly. A while ago it was psychedelic country, after that i was into really, really weird prog like Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart. I hardly listen to doom anymore, which is a shame.
I feel like it helps a lot when you have other people who have similar interests as you, but not totally. You just decide on something and stick with it.
Don't be like my a*****e ex bassist. He also went through those phases, but he felt like everyone else must also go through the exact same phases with him, and when you go through these, you must erase all music you previously wrote and start all over from scratch with this new style.
It would be one thing if he was awesome as ******** and god-tier artist material, but he wasn't, and he refused to get better in any way.

I think about what I want to sound like sometimes, and I do not get anywhere, so I just write s**t and see what it comes out like. Epiphanies about style can come when they come.

Anyway, I find it's good to have all these ideas and practice different techniques. Then, when it comes to sitting down to make something, you try to think as little as possible.

I don't know what I want to sound like, but I know what I want to do with my music.

It's not a bad thing to take some inspiration/influence from other musicians, but when it comes to actually writing music yourself, it would be better to not have a clear idea in mind of what you want to sound like. Have a vague concept in mind, and roll with that.
...unless of course you're suddenly struck with divine inspiration and a fully imagined concept suddenly pops into your mind. If that happens, then by all means do it.

I'm confused. Captain Beefheard and Frank Zappa are weird as ******** s**t.

I disagree. Beefheard and Zappa are not weird in the slightest, at least relative to some other stuff.

I disagree. Beefheart and Zappa are not weird in the slightest, at least relative to some other stuff. And calling them prog is kind of offensive. Although I'd be willing to back down on Zappa as I've only heard a couple of albums. I'm really not going to get into a "listing weird things" pissing contest, just be certain that there are far stranger things out there.
