I just found out that a product called rennet, which is an enzyme extracted from the stomaches of young calves (usually -- sometimes other farm animals), is used in cheeses. I know that there are some vegetarian cheeses that don't have this, but anyway, my question is this: is it added to other diary products as well?

On the cheese that I usually buy it's listed under nutritional information as 'Enzymes (Rennet)'. On some other diary products (Philadelphia) it just says 'Enzymes' but doesn't specify. Would this refer to rennet as well, or something different? Also, is it added to stuff like feta and ricotta? Very specific questions, I know, but I can't find anything on google. <_<

Ah yes, I remember reading an article about that a while back, I was sad and disappointed. I honestly don't know if it's used in other cheeses or not, the safest way to go is checking the label. If it just says "enzymes" but doesn't specify, try double checking the ingredients. If your concerned about rennet being in dairy products, you could try vegan cheese. Also, yogurt is usually "enriched with live enzymes" so I have no idea if that means rennet, or just yeast, or something else. Again, double checking labels and ingredients is the safest route to go.

Unfortunately the ingredients lists in Australia aren't quite as specific as they should be. e_e I had posted this same question on another board and someone replied as thus:

Quote:
Actually now a days, almost all rennet is plant based since it's cheaper and easier to come by. So unless you're buying super fancy REAL cheese, I wouldn't worry about it at all...

But that's not what most vegans/vegetarians are claiming. I dunno. Need to do more research.

you could always call the company's question line & ask. but, it is typically true that cheap cheeses like kraft & such have plant-based rennet & more expensive(even just sargento!) have animal-based rennet.

Thanks. I wish they'd be specific on the packages, but that's not gonna happen. =) I usually go for the cheap things anyway.
