Kayou looked around curiously, blinking in the early morning sun. As normal, there was nobody around. She stood up quietly, gently shaking herself to settle her fur, then fanned her wings, ruffling them before letting them come to rest upon her back.
Being sure to be absolutely silent, she began walking, headed for the spring she's been staying near. As she drew near to it, she crouched down, going perfectly still and watching for several minutes, making sure that nothing was lurking around. After a few minutes, she slowly pointed her nose up, sniffing the air, trying to catch any scents that would betray danger. She continued to sniff for a while, then, satisfied that nothing was around, she stood up and headed for the watering hole.
She was absolutely careful not to move the tall grass around her more than absolutely necessary, barely making a ripple as she finally approached the water. At the water's edge, she stopped, darting her head side to side, looking again for anything out of place. Satisfied that things were okay for the moment, she bent her head down, lapping softly at the water, her ears pricked forward attentatively.

It had been quite awhile since Iro had been in this part of the world. Through the desert he had persevered, and his journey had been rewarded. He slithered along on his belly, ears listening but inattentive. He had no fear of the land, nor of its inhabitants. All he needed was water. Throat-quenching, body cooling water. In his adventure across the desert the comet serpent had been forced to do without - mercifully he exited the desert quickly, or else he might not've left at all. Slipping through the undergrowth, he had little care for where he was going, until he nearly fell into a spring. For a moment he eyed it - was it clean? Yes. Disease-free? Likely. He stuffed his entire face into the water, gulping at it desperately. He didn't even notice the little fox sitting on the other side of the pond.

Kayou jerked her head up at the noise that was approaching. She listened intently, never having heard anything like it before.
When the serpent appeared, she jumped back in fright, her fur standing on end, wings mantling, trying to look as big and scary as she could.
She paused like that for a moment, then carefully began to back into the grass, trying to get away before whatever it was noticed her. Unfortunately, she couldn't take her eyes off of it, and consequently, she stepped on a rather crunchy leaf, causing it to make a sound that to her, was deafeningly loud.
With a sudden squeak, she tried to dart off into the grass, hoping that the....thing.... didn't decide to chase her. As she ran, she made a lot of noise, blundering around in her haste.

The serpent's head snapped up, eyes locked onto the Starfox as she stepped on a leaf. Aw, it was a cute little bab~ wait, where was it going? Iro called out to her as she dashed away, "Wait! I won't hurt you!" But she was out of sight and likely out of hearing by now. For a moment he considered resuming his gulping, but...there were dangers in this place, and he felt rather bad for scaring the poor thing. He didn't want her to develop Generalized Anxiety Disorder because of him.
He flapped his wings and cruised across the pond, following the wreckage of grass that signified the child's path. He would catch up, with time.

Kayou continued to blunder about for a few moments, before finally slowing down, moving behind a bush to catch her breath. She thought for a moment, then darted back along the way she came for a bit, suddenly slipping off to the side, trying to confuse her scent trail a bit.
Once she was a good bit away, she angled back towards the spring, hoping she could make the climb she was thinking about. She moves as fast as she could while remaining silent, working her way carefully around rocks and plants, and staying to the taller grasses.
Once she arrived back at the spring, she padded into the water silently, until she was ankle deep in it. Once she was deep enough, she walked/shuffled along until she was at the base of a rather gnarled tree.
She looked at it for a moment, then proceeded to leap from the water, jumping onto an exposed root. She looked upwards for a moment, then chose her next target. With a careful jump, she landed on it. Right as she thought she was okay, her back right paw slipped, going out from under her so that she slammed into the tree, her upper leg hitting the wood hard enough that she let out an involuntary yelp of pain.
She flattened her ears, standing up, gathering her legs under her before jumping again, this time making it up into the leaves. As she landed, her injured leg twisted, causing her to yelp again, before she curled up against the trunk, trying to hide as best as she could amongst the leaves.

Iro paused in his chase - wait, now this was confusing. He couldn't smell very well at all, but she'd apparently changed paths, and several times. Giving a soft, irritable hiss, he simply turned and went back the way he came. It was a terrible thing he'd not be able to catch up to the frightened little fox, but he'd never been much of a tracker, and his head was beginning to spin a bit. It would take awhile for the effects of dehydration to wear away. in the meantime, a bath didn't sound too bad...
Slithering back towards the spring, he arrived to see that it was uninhabited. The fox must've gone on. The serpent slid into the water, using his wings to hold his head above the surface. Ah, it felt so nice, after that hot desert. A few clumps of sand fell from his scales to the clear spring floor, and his mane clung to the sides of his neck like vines on a tree.
His head snapped up at the yelp - there was someone here. It sounded quite...foxish. Perhaps the little one had returned? He couldn't see anything among the leaves of the tree, and he didn't particularly feel like leaving the water, so Iro simply called out a greeting: "Who goes there?"

Kayou froze at the sound of a voice, blinking in surprise. How did he track her so fast? She shivered a little, part from pain and part from fear. Whatever that was...it looked like it could easily, and gladly, eat her in one bite.
As she shivered, a single feather fell of her wing, drifting down to the water lazily.
Quietly she looked up and around, planning how to get out of the tree and away. As she looked around, she realized how bad of a situation she was in. The only good way to escape involved jumping straight to the ground...which was definitely too far. She COULD jump in the water...but the thing chasing her was in there. She shifted around, her claws making slight noises on the bark, letting out another involuntary yelp when she tried to put weight on her hind leg.
Kayou turned her head, looking at it as if it had betrayed her....which it had. She moved again, the twinge from her leg causing her this time to suddenly bite it, which in turn caused her to yelp even louder and jerk back.....and fall out of the tree, hitting several limbs on her way down.
She hit the ground with a loud sound, almost as if something much larger had fallen. She whined, but got up anyways, her bad leg held at an odd angle, facing the thing, wings mantled and fur standing on end, obviously ready to fight to live.

Iro watched as the lone feather flitted down and alighted on the water silently. He peered up at the source - he could clearly hear the crackling of bark and soft cries of pain, but to fly up to the fox would only scare her more. Instead he waited, neon eyes narrowed in worry for the child. It certainly sounded as though she was injured, and in a considerable amount of pain. Injuries, out here in the wild...He shuddered at the horrific diseases that could come down upon her.
He couldn't help but give a soft cry as he saw the little bundle of fur tumble from the tree. The serpent darted forward to try and catch her, but - too late. She smacked into the ground with an eerie boom, and upon standing he could see that she had injured herself. Quickly the physician inside the serpent took over. That leg was very likely broken, and without proper supervision, it could heal in such a way that it would be unusable for...well, life. Thankfully it wasn't a compound fracture - that minimized risk of infection and bleeding.
But that leg would have to be set and bound. Iro could see the fox was terrified, and would likely try to tear him to bits if he got close. Plus, out here in the oasis, what could he use to bind her wounds? Damn humans, with their leaving the children of the stars here to die, without so much as a major back-up of supplies.
"Is something wrong?" He feigned innocence - he could clearly tell she was in pain, but if he could get the foxling to talk, perhaps he could get close enough to help.

Kayou narrowed her eyes, staring intently at whatever it was. Her eyes flicked rapidly, tracing every movement it's body made.
She blinked in surprise when he talked, subtly relaxing and tilting her head, blinking curiously. The noises were similar to what she'd heard before....but she had no idea what they meant.
Kayou continued to watch.....it....not really sure what was going on now.
((And just to be random: Watashi no hobākurafuto wa unagi de ippai desu.))

Iro eyed her. Hm. She seemed to recognize that he was speaking, but...it was almost as though she couldn't understand English. That was a bit of a problem. He could remember back to when he was a younger serpent, back to when his human was still around - she'd spoken a lot of languages. It had been a hobby of hers. But in his age, he couldn't remember much of them. Awkwardly, and likely incorrectly, he began: "Me llamo Iro. ¿Cómo te llamas?"
Racking his brains, he could only think of a few other languages off the top of his head. Hopefully the weird one with the y sounding lls would be it.

Kayou blinks again. These sounds were different. She looked at the thing in front of her, tilting her head sideways in a manner that most would call quite comical.
"N-Nihongo o hanashimasu ka?"
She waited cautiously, hoping that whatever it was knew what she was saying.....since she had no clue what it was saying.

That language. It was familiar. He didn't know what she was saying, unfortunately, but...he did know some of the language. It was the one from far away, with the funny letters that looked more like drawings. Thinking back to all those years ago, he asked his question again: "Hajimemashite, Iro desu. Onamae oshiete itadake masu ka?"

Kayou perks her ears forward, relaxing a little more as the...whatever....speaks in a language she can understand.
"Oaidekite ureshii desu. Watashi no namae Kayou desu."
She sat there, trying to remember anything else...but having pretty much exhausted her quite limited vocabulary. This was going to be a challenge....but maybe the thing wasn't going to try and eat her.

The serpent pondered for a moment. She was happy about...something. And her name was Kayou. That was all he could glean from the brief conversation between them. But where had the little fox learned such a strange language? Had she had a human too? It hadn't been that long ago that they had left, after all. More importantly, how did he ask what hurt? Iro thought, but he could only remember this: "Itai?" He knew it wasn't exactly a question, but with his limited knowledge, it was all he had.
Seeing her relax, he slid forward a little bit, watching her closely to make sure she didn't try to bolt again.

Kayou blinks, pondering for a moment, then shakes her head up and down.
"Hai. Sune itai."
She watched the creature move towards her, stiffening a little, but not making ready to bolt yet. It didn't seem like it wanted to eat her...or maybe it was asking so it knew her weaknesses?
