I was so surprised to see that no one posted anything like this yet. I guess a lot of people on Gaia just don't understand my deep love for the glittery eyes~ xD Just kidding!
Anyways, I was wondering what your favorite vintage shoujo mangas/animes are?
My personal favorites are Candy Candy, Rose of Versailles, and Creamy Mami.
I have other favorite artists, but I haven't got around to reading their works, so they don't count.

I love glittery eyed shoujo! Seriously, I love the unique style you only get from that era of shoujo. I'm really sad that here in the US we pretty much totally overlooked it and don't get the anime or manga officially. sad

My favorites are Ikeda's stuff, Rose of Versailles and Oniisama e at least as far as anime goes, I haven't read the manga for them.

Bride of Deimos was an interesting manga from the half of it I've read. (stupid manga company only doing half of it)

I'd probably have a lot more on this list if there were more of it commercially available, I hate reading/watching on the computer. So it takes me a long time to get around to checking out stuff that isn't available officially or on OLD fansubbed VHS (which is how I saw oniisams e and Rose of versailles)

I know, Isn't it great? I think it's so amazing how everything back then was hand drawn and colored too. Everything nowadays is just done with computers. I wish people would appreciate the beauty of it more. It's such a shame! I've been dying to find some vintage shoujo mangas that are translated to English, but it's so difficult to find. None of my local bookstores carry anything older than the 80s and even finding anything in those years is quite hard.
I love Riyoko Ikeda's work~ Her art style is so amazing, she's one of my idols. ♥ I've only read part of the manga for RoV, considering theirs only a few chapters even translated yet. :[ But I'll try and check out Bride of Deimos if I can find it online!!
I know what you mean! It's just not the same as watching it on TV or picking up the book to read. It really bothers my eyes to stare at a computer for too long... So sometimes, I'm almost tempted to buy the bootlegs off of Ebay. Haha. Although I know it's not right~

I collect animation cels and other original art so I'm very sensitive to how much the creatice process has changed over the years. I think everything looksed so much nice and much more full of life when it was still all doen by hand as a legitimate art rther than just a money making tool liek so many manga and anime are done as these days.

I've also been totally tempted to buy a bootleg of Rose of Versailles of ebay, I've got it on fansubbed VHS, but it's not complete and I'd way rather watch it on TV.

I bought pretty much all my manga and anime online as I can never find anything but the new stuff that I'm not at all interested in. In a few cases though I've been able to special order through the bookstore, I had to do that to complete my galaxy express manga collection.

I really think it's sad that even now when we get tons of new anime and manga released in the west, no one seems to be willing to pick up the classics.

You should really try oniisama e (Brother Dear) if you can find the fansub, it's another one by Ikeda and reminds me a lot of rose of versaille, but in a more "down to earth" sort of way.

Oh cool! I've always seen some really cool Sailor Moon cels on Ebay, but I can never bring myself to buy any. It's probably because I know how much of an addictive hobby it is and once your in, there's no getting out. xD I agree completely. Art shouldn't be just something you use to make money off of. I like when Manga artists really have a passion for what they're doing. It just makes their works all the much better.

I would! Although, I'd be pretty concerned on the subtitling. Hopefully it wouldn't be too bad, otherwise your just wasted like, 50 dollars. xD I recently just saw on Ebay the new movie that's coming out? It's called Rose of Versailles II. If you've ever seen the Pachinko Machine images, that's what this movies kind of looks like. I heard it was suppose to come out in 2011, but I guess it's out now? o.o This is basically the movie trailer, if you haven't seen it already. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJlWpfRqsXc&feature=related
The art is VERY different. More so, the animation style. Which can be a good thing and a bad thing. :/ (Sorry, This was a bit off topic, just thought you might want to know. xD)

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've had to special order things occasionally. They almost NEVER have what I'm looking for. I know the company CMX has translated a lot of older mangas I like, but they went out of business and no longer print their mangas, so I can't have them. ;_; I can't even request them at the store.

This is a bit off the main topic, but is Shoujo a dying/dead genre? Not that there were lot of us participating in this thread, but we all cited old shows and honestly I can't think of a new shoujo show off the top of my head that's not just another magical girl rehash or straight romance with no other depth. I don't think they really make and shoujo dramas for the most part anymore.

(There might still be manga though, I know a lot less about the most recent manga in Japan than I do about the anime)

Now that you've pointed that out, I definitely see what you mean. I haven't heard of any new shoujo titles in a very long time. I hear of the occasional typical romance story with no plot development, like you said, but nothing else. You rarely ever see what shoujo is really MEANT to be anymore. It was never just meant to be about a girl-meets-boy type of thing. Shoujo is female-based series or in other words, a girl-power type of series, that shows the strengths of women in a exciting, positive way. All you see now are shows about guys hitting on "hot" girls and basically degrading women. Now, I wouldn't go quite as far to say it's dead, but it is dying. People are only interested in action-packed series full of fowl humor and "kawaii cat-boys." It honestly makes me very upset to think of how the future generations of anime fans will be. They will know nothing of a true story or art, shoujo manga especially. I'm hoping that maybe someday, the shoujo genre will make a comeback, but it's all up to the artists and writers now to decide. I would also assume that a lot of people would argue that perhaps the mangaka are just trying to keep up with the times and make what is popular. But how would have shoujo died in the first place then? How would people just suddenly stop enjoying it? There is no way that could happen. I'm sure they're are plenty of girls (and guys) out there that still want to pick up a girly manga with a good story. I think a lot of the mangakas are at fault here. They're style and art has become poor, as well as their writing, and no one can think of a good plot anymore. I think we need someone with fresh ideas that still has the classic shoujo flare to their work to revive our beloved genre. That's just my opinion.

So I hear. Why is America the only country not smart enough to licence it?

I ask myself the same question all the time. xD I'm sure it would have been extremely popular. I think they didn't license it here because of the deep story line. They might have thought it was "too complicated" for the children. Who knows. :/

There is the problem the problem with the mentality that all "cartoons" need to be for kids. The other problem is probably that it would be too much of an investment at this point to bring out such a long series since it doesn't conform with what is popular. Stupid stupid humans. . . I mean Americans.

Rose of Versailles introduced me to vintage anime, so for me it is the best one. I have even started watching the incomplete form of the musicals for it on youtube.
