That's Far Enough!

After the mess in Adliana, Abel stayed to help Chieftain Songhua rebuild and recover from the attack on his tribe. He had a great time during his stay there. Songhua's tribe was really nice. They gave Abel a place to stay and plenty of food. It was kind of sad for Abel to eventually leave, but he had someone waiting for his return.

When he made it back to Learania, he stopped in Eyris for a few errands. One of those errands led him into a shady part of the city out of sight. The boy slowly paced around, looking about curiously. "Hellooooo? Mr. Dealerman? Are you here...?"

"
Ah, you're back." came a slithering voice. A shady looking man came out and stood before Abel. "I take it you liked the grass, eh? Coming back for more, are you?"

Abel smiled and nodded. "Yeah! You were right, it made me feel great! Whenever I was feeling down, I used the grass like you said, and it made me feel loads better. It's especially good for taking the weariness out of long travel. Thanks for introducing it to me!"

The shady man chuckled softly. "
No problem, kid. But you know, I may have let you have the first bit for free, but if you're wanting more you'll have to supply what I talked to you about...."

The boy tilted his head at first, then became bright eyed again. "....Oh, yeah!" He pulled out his pack and rummaged through it and eventually pulled out what the man sought. "Grass from the plains! ....I got the right kind, right?" Abel held it out, offering it to the man.

A gleam appeared in the eyes of the man and hastily took the grass from the boy. He looked it over and smiled. "
Oh yeah, this is the right stuff, alright. You did good, kid." The man pulled out a container from within his coat and gave it to the boy. "Now, I don't do this for just anybody, but since I like you, I'm willing to keep giving you some of the finished product, if you keep getting this grass for me. It's such a pain to have to go all the way to Adliana and all that, you know..."

Abel took the container and gave a big toothy smile. "Got it! And don't worry, I will!" He turned to leave. "Thanks Mr. Dealerman!" He began to run off, but then stopped and turned back. "You know, that name sounds really odd. What's it mean?"

"
.... ....Friend."

"Ah. It suits you! Well, see ya later and thanks again!" Abel took off and made his way back to the main street. His business in Eyris was finished. It was time to go home.

When he was all alone, the man couldn't help but laugh. "
Stupid boy..."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Later in the day, Abel finally reached the village of Vayrin, the place he called home. Just seeing that peaceful village with the lakeside view put him at ease. He had been gone pretty much all spring. But the funds he got would make sure Alihi and Amara would live well.

Abel walked through the village until he eventually reached Alihi's house. He knocked on the door a couple of times, then opened it, not knowing who would be there and what. "Heeeeeey, I'm baaack!"

Alihi sighed quietly, the knife in her hand going shrk shrk shrk as the apple she held against the cutting board was sliced to pieces. Amara was down for a nap, Akihi was in another village . . . it was times like this where she felt really, really lonely. By this time, she was used to Abel being gone for long periods of time. It was just one of the understood and not questioned things in the life of Alihi. Did she enjoy it? Hell no. If she had a choice in the matter, she’d keep him at home.

Did she have a choice in the matter? No. After all, she needed the money in order to feed herself and Amara, and she was too busy to work in the Hostess Club as much as she would like to. After returning from Estarcia, she had set foot in Eyris maybe once or twice. She just couldn’t find the time; she had chosen to dedicate almost every second of her free time to keeping diligent records for herself. Every person that she met and every battle that she knew of were written about, all for her own reference. She felt as if she had to; it was the only way, in her mind, to become a better tactician.

In between being the tactician of a country, training to become a fighter for the same country, and being the mother of one of the most energetic girls ever, it was rare if Alihi got more than six hours of sleep a night.

I knew I should have cleaned the house another night. She thought bitterly to herself, releasing the knife so she could rub at her eyes. It could have waited—

knock knock knock

A visitor? She cracked a small smile, wiping apple juices off on the front of her pants. Well, as long as—

“Heeeeeey, I'm baaack!”

“ABEEEEEEEL!!”

. . . It doesn’t wake Amara up. She pressed a hand against her forehead, sighing to herself as she heard a familiar pitter-patter of feet head in the direction of the front door. The tactician was happy to hear the familiar voice, yes, and she did want to talk to him, but she figured that she should wait her turn. She picked the knife back up and resumed chopping up the apple as her daughter enthusiastically greeted Abel.

“Enthusiastically” was a bit of an understatement. “Abel! Abel Abel Abel! You’re back back back!” The five year-old girl squealed with delight, practically glomping the hero on sight. “I missed you! And so did mommy. She missed you lots and lots and lots!” She grinned up at him excitedly, swaying side to side. “What’d you do? Was it fun? Did ya get me something? Huh? Huh? Did ya?”

The hero was cut off as the little girl jumped at him, causing him to stumble, though thankfully he didn't lose his balance and fall to the ground like he had done so many times before. Abel laughed at how excited she was. Like any child, she was curious and had loads of questions right off the back. The constant voice was making Abel even dizzier than his current state was. But, she finally stopped after asking if he had brought something for her, of course. It was the adult's job to bring back something for a child, when they go away, right?

"Ahh, did I get you something? Oh man, let's see if I-" He stopped for a second and then clutched his bag. "No! That stuff for me, okay?! For me!" He paused a second and then felt something in his bag. "...Oh wait, here we go, I forgot I got this." Abel got down on a knee and pulled out a red jeweled necklace. "I got it from Chieftain Songhua, the White River's tribe. It's a special talisman that protects the wearer, especially magically gifted people." He put his free hand to his chin, acting like he was pondering. "Hm, now if only I knew a little girl that was learning to read tomes..."

Abel chuckled as the talisman was practically snatched from him, then got back on his feet. He scruffled Amara's hair, propped his sword against the wall, then slowly ventured inside and stretched. "So, where's Alihi?"

Amara stared up at Abel as he held his bag defensively. Something that’s for him and him only, hm? That was the kind of thing that the little girl had to investigate when no one else was looking.

But that would have to come later, for a pretty necklace was dangled in front of her face. Abel’s words were going in one ear and out the other . . . except for a few.

“Hm, now if only I knew a little girl that was learning to read tomes...”

She shot up immediately, snatching the talisman out of his hands. “Abeeeeeeel! Shh!” The little girl pouted, putting the trinket around her neck; the red jewel, with a bit of adjustment, ended up right above her silver locket. “That’s supposed to be a secret!” She glanced around for a moment before smoothing out her hair. “She's--”

“I'm right here. . . . What’s supposed to be a secret, sweetie?” The tactician asked, feigning curiosity as she leaned against the entrance to the kitchen. She knew Amara was learning about magic every time she went to Akihi’s and sometimes late at night; she just didn’t want to accept it and therefore did not approve of it.

“AAAAH! U-uh, n-nothing, mommy! There’s no secrets here! Nope!” Amara replied loudly, ducking behind Abel momentarily. “Definitely none! Nuh-uh! Nothing at all!”

Alihi could only laugh, a slight smile coming to her face. “Oh, really? Well, I cut some fruit for you, so if you want—” She cut herself off, watching as the five year-old zoomed past her, heading toward the plate of apples she left out.

“. . . Silly girl.” Shaking her head slightly, she turned to Abel. “Any injuries I need to patch up?” She asked teasingly, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek.

Abel scratched his bloodshot eyes, then looked back to Alihi. "What happened in Adliana was horrible. I was there when one of the tribes was attacked. Not many survived. We were fortunate to stop the attackers when they went for Songhua's tribe. But so many plainsmen died..."

He walked over to a table and set his pack down, then lounged in a chair. It felt good for Abel to be able to relax his muscles. He had traveled a long ways and was worn out. Plus, he had some extra influence in feeling disoriented. "...I'm really glad that guy showed me what to take so that I won't have to feel down anymore." He stretched again, then tilted his head back to look at Alihi and gave an odd smile that looked even odder with it being upside down. "Soooooo... how's it goin'?"

Something was wrong. Though she couldn’t pinpoint exactly what it was yet, she knew there was something . . . different. While Abel was talking, Alihi was quietly watching and listening to him, not saying a single word.

“Great guy, that whoever I just said...”

You shouldn’t forget something that quickly. She thought with a frown, staring at him with slight concern. Even if you’re tired, forgetting what you said seconds later is just ridiculous. She continued to watch him as he settled himself down in a chair, relaxing himself. The tactician did not want to think about what happened in Adliana; she knew very little about it, since she was unable to drag much information out of Akihi and she was not there herself. She knew she’d have to ask about it eventually. Just—

“... I’m really glad that guy showed me what to take so that I won’t have to feel down anymore.”

Alihi couldn’t believe her ears.

. . . What to take? She didn’t know how to react. Should she be upset? Worried? Scared? Angry? Or something else?

“Soooooo... how's it goin'?”

She went with the first thing that hit her.

“. . . I-it’s fine.” The tactician said, her voice cracking slightly. That smile he gave her was not his, she told herself. It was slightly unnatural and it made everything worse. “Amara’s learning how to write on top of everything else she does. She’s still happy despite everything that’s been thrown at her. And I’ve . . . just been working. A lot. As usual.” She forced herself to laugh softly. “But it’s been boring. Uneventful. All that stuff. . . . But it’s what I wanted, I guess. Something predictable and easy to deal with.”

Alihi turned to him, her dark eyes meeting his bloodshot ones. She couldn’t hide how her body was trembling with both sadness and anger. “. . . Abel. I have to ask. What did you take?”

The hero tried to get off the sofa, but ended up rolling off instead. He got to his feet with a chuckle and started to go over to the table where his bag was, but stopped when a sudden knock on the door came. "I'll get it!" Abel, forgetting what he was just doing, went over to the door. Alihi would still want to know what it was he took, and the answer was inside his bag. All she had to do was look, if she would feel no guilt from doing so.

The door opened and outside was a Learanian soldier. "
Excuse me, this is the tactician Alihi's home, is it not? We're carrying wounded back to Eyris from Pentheus, but are seeking out some immediate medical supplies. Could you be of any assistance?"

Abel tilted his head. "Wounded? ...What happened in Pentheus?"

The soldier just looked on blankly at the boy with his mouth open in disbelief. "
...You're kidding, right? Don't tell you haven't heard anything about the war! You would have had to have been gone for at least a month."

"Guilty!" Abel's cheery demeanor vanished as the news sunk in. "....Wait, war?!" His eyes widened as he turned back inside. "Oh my God! Alihi, we're at war! OH MY GOOOOOD!!"

Outside the house, some familiar feminine voices rang out. "
Ah! That voice...! It couldn't be..." The clerics from Pentheus came running up to the doorway. "Abel!"

The boy turned back to see the clerics and smiled widely. "Hey, you guys! You're okay! Oh man, I was so worried for the few seconds I've known about this war!" The clerics, unaware that something was off about Abel, giggled at what he said. To them, he was just being silly.

The soldier, who seemed to be the most focused and aware of the situation, coughed in an attempt to refocus the boy to his request. "
As I said, we're in need of some immediate medical supplies, if you have any to spare. We've come here in hopes that Alihi could help us. The soldier tried to peer around Abel and into the house. "Lady Alihi, are you home?"

The answer was in his bag. Alihi wanted to know what he had taken, in order to determine if he was going to be alright.

But there was a moment's hesitancy. Was it right for her to just look in his bag? She would be irritated if Abel looked through her stuff without asking.

But this is different. She tried to convince herself, walking over to the table. This could be actually—

"Oh my God! Alihi, we're at war! OH MY GOOOOOD!!"

. . . Be one of the worst days of my life. The tactician groaned aloud, heading toward the front door. She knew about the war, but had yet to be an active participant in it; the factor of Amara kept her at home. However, she was constantly aware that a soldier could arrive at her doorstep at any given time, asking for her assistance. And, on most occasions, she would have been ready for that. But not now, with Amara in the house, having abandoned her apples and deciding that clinging to Alihi's leg was the best thing to do at the moment, or with Abel in his mental state that Alihi couldn't properly describe with words.

This was not a convenient time for her, but since when is war ever convenient?

Unwillingly dragging the little girl behind her, the tactician gently pushed her way past Abel. She glanced at the soldier for a moment before nodding once. "You're speaking to her. You said you need supplies?" She patted Amara on the head gently, smoothing back her hair. "Sweetie, can you go get the medical kit? You know where it is. Get Abel to help you get it if you can't reach it." The little girl nodded, reaching for the hero's arm to drag him away.

The tactician waited for Amara to get out of ear-shot before speaking again. ". . . Can you update me on what is going on? I can assume things aren't going well, but how bad are they?"

And I'm not ashamed to be...

AND SO AFTER RETREATING FROM PENTHEUS BECAUSE MORDACHE AND SENTRIA ARE MEAN GUYS, NEEDLES' ARMY TOTALLY ARRIVED AT VAYRIN VILLAGE ON THE WAY BACK TO EYRIS. ಠ_ಠ
PostPosted: Tue Aug 10, 2010 4:15 pm

The soldier at the door nodded to the tactician, then watched as the little girl went to get some supplies. He would have specified the injuries, but didn't want to say anything that might have frightened the child. The good thing was that there were even supplies to be had.

He looked back to Alihi, when she asked him a question. "The initial bandit assault on Pentheus left many of its citizens dead or missing. Captains Needles and Deborah were sent to retake the city and did so successfully. After the city was cleared of bandit scum, Captain Deborah led a small group into Sentria to lay a trap for the bandits that were coming to attack Pentheus again. As she left, a group of us were ordered to take the remaining citizens back to Eyris, but some of the ones we're transporting are in critical conditions, so we've had to stop occasionally." The soldier took a step back to reveal the clerics tending to some wounded that were laid out on the ground around some of the other houses. "We've actually been here for a good while now, mainly closer to the lake. We were on our way again when some of the wounded needed more attention. Some other soldiers arrived not long ago, but I haven't yet been able to catch up with them on how things have gone. I'm not sure why they're here, though... unless they're transporting civilians, they should have just gone back to Pentheus..."

As the soldier concluded, a bearded soldier came running up. "Hey! Hey!! I just got word from the soldiers who came. Captain Deborah's trap worked, but a huge Mordachean army came out of nowhere and forced them to retreat! The Captain stayed behind to let them get away." The bearded soldier turned and pointed out to the western end of the village, by the lake. "And look... it's Captain Needles, with the rest of her forces, along with the guild members. That can only mean one thing... we had to give up Pentheus."

"Damn it...!" The other shouted, not realizing that the child may have come back by then. "I knew that Mordache would be sending forces by sea, but Sentria is actually letting them travel through their land on foot? This is hopeless... no matter how many armies we fight off, another comes and drives us back...!" The soldier shook his head. "Nowhere is safe, anymore... possibly not even Eyris."

User ImageIf there was one thing that the tiger didn't like, it was running away from the battle. In the predator's instinct, they didn't run away from a battle, no matter the number or strength, unless it was danger lurking that made their lives crawled up to their spines. Man, that had just ruffled his fur.

First the retreat from the desert, and then they retreated from the ruined port city to this little dinky village. What's next? They would have to retreat this too? If so, then it would be clear that these beorc were more fragile than he thought they were.

While the others were resting or replenishing their supplies, Rajin looked around the area. Apparently, it seemed that they weren't the only group who arrived to the village to rest. There were those who came from Pentheus earlier too in this village. He could see the wounded people lying on the ground, needed medical service as well as smelling the blood from the tearing flesh and herbal medicine. Were they here to rest too before heading toward Eyris? Man, it looked like these beorc would need dozen of wagons to carry the injures to Eyris. It would be really suck if they had to defend them from the bandits. Thankfully, there were no bandits in sight so far.

Wanting to release his stress and frustration, the tiger walked while pulling out a small thin, wrapped paper. Seeing one of the guards smoking, Rajin asked the guy to light it up for him. The tiger took a small inhale before letting the smoke out as he continued walking before reaching a large, flat rock by the lake. Man, if only he was a cat to take the effect of the catnip. He could really use it right now.

Sitting down, Rajin took another puff of his joint while scanned the area, thinking. How long were they going to stay before moving? Would the bandits and Mordachean bastards follow them? Were they going to fight or flee again?

"Man, this blows." Rajin spoke out, letting the smoke out of his mouth before taking another breathe of the catnip.

((Crap post since I have no idea what did Needle's group do when arriving.))

It was one thing to make them go back to the place they saved...it was another to then send them off to a different location, after rescuing some units.

The retreat from the desert wasn't that fun...going back to Pentheus seemed like a good idea, except they quickly had to retreat from there, as more forces had invaded and took it over. So now they were off to a little village.

A shadow loomed over those tending to the wounded, and Zeiss helped the wounded soldier he had on Rubley into the healer's care...then took the time to take in the scenery. He finally made it to a village like he was supposed to...however, this one wasn't in need of some help it seemed...for now that is.

Well, there was a lake nearby, so Zeiss could take Rubley over there, and relax a bit, while Rubley could refresh himself after the flights they had been on. Hopefully they wouldn't be taking off anytime soon...he needed to take this time for both himself and Rubley.

Getting close to the lake showed that it was calm...maybe there would be some fish there? Grabbing his Steel Lance, he started to do some spear fishing. How many fish did he get? Well...he managed to spear a total of six fish...each a decent size to feed some of the soldiers here, if prepared correctly. Well, he could at least clean the fish, and make them presentable to a cook whenever he would find one, so that was what he did, then took off to go find one, and give the food he had to someone that could prepare a meal for the wounded.

So they retreated to a small village that wasn't too far from the big puddle. Sunil didn't like the big puddle. Sure, it was nice to look at, but he didn't trust water all that much. Sure, he was fine with rain and rivers, but when a body of water just stayed in one place like ponds, lakes and oceans, he was a little wary. If it stormed, it could probably flood, and flooding was bad. Blame the tidal wave he endured once, back in Tellius, shortly before arriving to this world. Gods, that was horrible. So much water, so little time.

He wandered past the area the injured soldiers were resting. It seemed like they called some healers to treat them. From the scents he was picking up, maybe some herbal medicine users too. Maybe his client was in this bunch. The kitty glanced around the group, the obnoxiously poofy afro making him look incredibly ridiculous. After a few minutes, he found his man. He wandered over to the herbologist once he finished doing what he could for the patient and, after a few minutes of talking (mostly about Sunil's hair. The client was amused), the herbs were delivered. His pay would come in the mail sometime soon (since the client didn't have the cash on him at the moment).

Well, with that delivered, Sunil wandered around, eventually finding the tiger sitting on a rock by the big puddle. He glanced up at the sky to check the weather. Looked clear enough. If a sudden storm came, he'd have more than enough time to get away.

As he got closer, he could see the tiger smoking something. It smelled...familiar.

"Hey there. Looks like we're allowed to rest a bit." he said, taking a seat across from Rajin. He looked at the rolled up paper Rajin was smoking, paused for a moment, then looked up at him. "Wait, isn't that ca--...Nyaaaa..."

It seemed like the cat was feeling the effects of the catnip Rajin had on him. Well, after the fighting and stuff, he was allowed to relax a little, right?

Regret..regret was all that Ephraim could feel the very moment. Having forced to leave Deborah behind left a sharp pain in his chest. That usually was not something he liked. If it could be avoided then the lancer would have thought that already....but he wasn't the one pulling the strings...no...he's not the one in charge but...Curses!

Having forced to abandon Pentheaus made everything worse as well and they were forced to retreat here. Once they were in the village, Ephraim gently set down one of teh soldiers he had helped carried. "It'd be great if this one got some medical attention" he called to one of the medics that had retreated here. His own wound on the arm was treated rather quickly as well. Ephraim didn't question it, worry ran through his mind as he constantly kept a look out for Deborah.

He paced where he stood. For once impatience took over and man was he no where near calm. He held back all urge to run back but knew it would only be a mistake. Waiting was horrible....Ephraim knew that all too well. Several other soldiers and medic approached him, offering him some water. Ephraim gratefully took it but even with the water pouch in his hand it was really hard to keep his mind off what the hell was going on around this place.

Ephraim resumed his pacing around in a circle once more. Some said he had sat down every now and then..but then got back up out of reflex and when he claimed he was sitting..he clearly was not.

User ImageWhile Rajin was smoking and watching the scene before him, his ears twitched when he heard footsteps approached him. Turning his head around, he noticed the cat laguz from earlier approached...

... Or what he thought was the same cat? Man, what the hell happened to him? He could tell it was the same cat, wearing the same outfit. But man, what with the smell of being roasted and the hairdo? It looked like the cat was wearing his own hairball. Probably it must had happened during the battle. The tiger didn't get a good chance to see that cat after being injured and retreating from battles twice. And although he should be laughing at the cat with that ridiculous hairdo, Rajin was quite grumpy about the retreats.

"Eh, whatever." Rajin commented as he looked back at the lake and smoked, feeling quite stressed out. Although the catnip helped eased his stress little bit, the tiger was still upset about what had happened. Bandits in Pentheus, his artifact was broken, battle in the desert where they were forced to retreat not once but twice. Man, that would leave a beating to the tiger's pride. Speaking of pride, he wondered if that black woman survived. Sure it would be a suicidal to against against hundreds of army, but if that woman had managed to survive during their ambush, it wouldn't surprised him of how strong she was.

As he continued thinking, he heard a strange sound coming from the cat.

"Huh, what were you saying?" Rajin asked as he turned to face the cat. The tiger looked dumbfounded when he saw the cat's goofy expression. What the hell with that face? Did the cat ate something funny while they were resting?

"Hey, are you okay?" Rajin questioned the cat as he waved his hand in front of the cat's face. The smoke from the joint he was holding was weaving left and right from the wave. Really, since when was the cat all goofy all of a sudden? It was like the cat was on- Oh s**t, Rajin suddenly figured out what was wrong with the cat.

Rajin quickly removed his joint from the cat's face and dropped it onto the ground. He could still smell the catnip lingered in the air and from the joint. The tiger stomped the joint and grounded it before moving the soil onto the now wasted joint. Although he shouldn't give a damn of whether he made the cat high or not, the situation they were in was not good. There was no telling when the bandits or Mordachean army planned to attack this town and it would be s**t if the cat dared to attack in that condition. Making sure that the joint was fully buried, the tiger shook the cat while snapping his fingers in his face.

"Hey buddy, you need to snap out of it." Rajin said, trying to see if the cat's sense came back. "This is no place to get all shitface."

He hoped that the cat would snap out of it. Otherwise, he would have to dunk the cat into the lake if the condition get worse.
