I hope not. I'd rather it be slow than dead.

I check my guilds nearly every day, even if I don't have much to say. It's just slow moving. 3nodding

The energy of the thread has gone down. I would contribute more but my betta died recently, and the only thing that still remotely stands in as part of an aquarium is my marimo ball. Which by the way, I am trying to make it grow faster 9w9 or should I say make the smaller divisions grow faster.
I think it's working very well too. Not the usual convention most people use to make their tiny ball grow up, but it's worth a shot trying.

What are you doing to speed up growth?

What are you doing to speed up growth? I'm starting several small tiny clumps, since my friend wants some. I gently pull them apart so they spread out of like a flat carpet on the surface of the water, rather than small individual balls. I figured like a round cell, growth is slow because of the vol:surface area, so I increase surface area, this increases sun exposure, water circulation and space-after all marimo is a plant. And many people claim that: "for more marimo, break it up and they grow faster" I don't think most people will prefer this method because they want their ROUND ball, but I figured I might as well grow the necessary material first then worry about the roundness later. I read that the marimo ball is round due to the water currents shaping the marimo filaments together into clusters and smooths out later in life as it grows. biggrin It's a test run, an experiment it seems to be working well, nothing dead yet. Too bad I don't have any micro scales to actually measure the growth. oh well.

I don't think this guild is dead, just slow. Personally between, exams, vacation, more exams and a confusing relationship, I haven't quite had much time to be on gaia, let alone the guild. My aquarium has settled, and since it only has one grumpy fish there isn't much to talk about ^^;
Ta Lu, I'm sorry to hear about your betta, are you gonna get another or are you going to wait? That's an interesting experiment though, with the marimo. Mine has almost died now. There are still a few clumps here and there, but I think by next year it'll be gone. Oh well, I have more then enough Java. :3

@ Ta Lu Sorry to hear about your betta. Are you planning to give your experimental marimo some company soon?
@ Irrlich Grumpy fish? One that bites the hand that feeds it?

Chronos was shared between my room mate and me. I'm going to wait to go shopping to pick out a new fishy friend when school starts again. Yep.
0^0 is your tank water warm? Marimo prefer coolers waters. Why don't you try putting your marimo in another container for a few weeks to see if it perks up.

@ Ta Lu: I think it's more a case of lack of light. In the winter I do place the tank on the window sill to trigger an algea bloom for my amano shrimp, but in the summer the tank would overheat. The average temperature is 78°F (25°c), with peaks of 86°F (30°c), and max dips of 68° (20°c). I geuss small tanks react very strongly to the temperature of their enviournment, even if they have a heater.
@ Degenerate: I he had the balls he probably would. He used to flare a lot at me and then hide. Now he's mostly curious when I come by, especially since he knows I bring the food. He still doesn't dare to touch me though, and he's been here for mor then a year XD I say grumpy because he's horribly territorial, often nipping at the shrimp. He behaves like a shy betta :/ (it's the right fish in the signature)

yeah, I guess that would do it, maybe moving them to a part of the tank that get's more light during the duration of the entire day?
