Youngest of several sisters in an upper-middle class family, Mei had never known what it was like to be poor. Though it was her eldest sister who would inherit the family trade of crafting goods, Mei had her sights on something more profitable as a business and, once she was old enough, eventually took her share from the government and ventured from her home to be closer to the center of Babylon. At times she keeps correspondence with her family, but for the most part she has her eyes set on expanding her horizons from mere crafting and fishing exchanges.
Mei is highly attracted to jewels and precious stones, so it isn’t any surprise she wants to set up a jewelry shop. While outwardly weak in strength and strong in will, inward lies a constantly calculating being. Her noble background shines through in her eloquent speech and high bearing, so if she has a holier than thou impression, chances are it’s that coming out in the bluntest fashion.
She believes in the notion that a master is only as well-spoken of as her slaves, so she takes care of the cats that come into her care in that they are given decent beds and food. With time to examine each one’s strengths and weaknesses, Mei doles out jobs best to their ability – she will not force a cat to do something she is certain they cannot do, so if she pushes, it’s because she has faith; even if it comes out as the tyrant hound nipping and criticizing the poor kitty. The only time a cat will be punished is if it breaks something or otherwise deals out a mark against her reputation, usually in the form of little/no food and more monotonous or meticulous jobs; rarely is corporal punishment administered. She considers herself a judicious master and does give rewards when rewards are due.
Much like her many jewels, Mei is cool to the touch and near flawless in her appearance, mostly talking business and hardly ever allowing prying into her personal life. She does not care for the past history of slaves so long as they are willing to do what she asks of them now and in the future. After all, the past is not subject to change: it’s the future she looks to.

Born in the outskirts of the dusty tribe of Zanzibar, Adham lived with his single mother under a rather poor master. The hound had forced the female to breed, knowing that her only chance at a shot of a middle-class life would be to produce more exotic pets to self off at higher prices. As such, Adham was forcibly separate from his mother at a young age and put on the market as a mere kitten prized for his odd coloring and half-tail. Since then he has grown up under several hounds’ ownership, most ending on the sour note of him being caught trying to escape (usually to avoid being bred). One day he hopes to find his mother, not doubting that she is still around; even if he can’t quite recall her name . . .
For a slave, Adham is rather content in his life. He finds a silver lining in most any situation and sometimes even treats the black market system like a game he happens to be a contestant in – even if the prizes aren’t always exactly “nice” owners. To other slaves he attempts to bring their spirits up with the belief that a slave with the willpower to keep going will produce a positive response in their masters. Still, his complacent attitude hides the urge to flee when things get too rough even for his optimism to tackle, and all in all though he would willing take a bullet so to speak, his meager strength and small form don’t offer much in the form of a fighter. His only good physical points at this moment are his speed and ability to produce decent results under short periods of time.

Anima had no recollection of where she had been before she was found in one of Cairo’s many rivers, nor was she able to recall what her family was like, or if she had a master in some other portion of Syria not yet developed enough to take a place on the map. Taken in as a blank slate, she has been stuck within the black market with little to explain her odd appearance or why she had on gold metal (which was usually reserved for high-rank slaves). With no-one coming to reclaim her, she has become little more than another mewling cat in the various cages of Zanzibar – albeit one with rather impressive fangs.
Beyond her occasional minor memory lapses, Anima’s timidity camouflages her amongst more bold or violent slaves. She hates being in the spotlight and, despite her intelligence and love of words, doesn’t like to show it off and actually would rather dumb herself down in front of others. Why would she do so if to be useful meant better treatment? Because she’s far more afraid of messing up with those raised expectations than she is of being considered a dumb freak. While thankfully Anima will do any task you put her up to, she’s an easily frightened kitteh: loud noises, sudden movements, intimidating animals, and the dark are just a few fears she has.
Though it’s quickly apparent that Anima isn’t exactly extroverted, she has a knack for observing movements and being able to replicate them quickly. The easiest way for her to acclimate is through a steady stream of positive words and gentle criticisms, followed by a series of jobs that forces her to stimulate her brain. Sharp barks, heated looks, and cold silences only make her freeze up with anxiety: which, by the way, she has a reservoir of. Under the right master, Anima has the potential to be among the fastest-learning slaves; under the wrong one, she could become stuck in a cycle of self-critical and esteem-lowering periods that only is a detriment to all.
