It's so rare to find anything on the subject, most horrors being simple gorefests. If anyone has one posted, be ever so kindly to direct me the post way.
What are your thoughts on what defines a attempt at psychological horrors a successful one?
Any and all discussion is welcome.

I have a short story that I guess one could call a psychological horror. It's called "From the Killer's Eyes" and I'm just about to post it, so check it out if you will.

I think psychological horror is much scarier than any stupid gorefest. Have you ever seen "From Within"? it's an indie, so not alot of people have. it's super scary fantastic...

The short story 1408 by Stephan King was really good at scaring me just by describing the not-so-slow descent into disbelief and possible insanity that the narrator was suffering through. I think they made a movie out of it that was most likely nowhere near as powerful as the story- I just remember it being so out there it was frightening, and that something that would play with it's victims like that was just disquieting.
Not sure about any on here that I could link you to, I can try and think of some fanfictions though if you'd like.
I have noticed that though, most people try to gross their audience out and claim it's horror, but it's more like that show Fear Factor. Horror's more of what keeps you up at night then what upsets your stomach, is what I think. :/

OMG... So Stephen King made that story/film eh... No wonder it was disturbing and scary... There is a film 1408 and I watched it.

Psych horror. ♥
On the topic of Stephen King, he seems to be pretty good at putting random psychological elements into his horror. I only saw the movie, but...the end of "The Mist," anyone? I know it made me angry. ~
I think that anything with a darker element which also explores those shadowy parts of psychology can define as a psych horror. As long as it makes people question something within humanity, or psychology, it's successful.

It's just, the point of horror is to frighten you beyond reasoning, right? And, well, fear beyond reason... that's really just fear of possibility, of the unconfirmed, right? Say you watch a movie where someone's head gets cut off. It might scare you, but it's a fear of reason, because there's no ifs, ands, or buts about the head being cut off. But a movie where the main character is forced into a world of dangerous possibility... in the darkness, with sounds all around, and no way to confirm that the sounds are dangerous or even REAL... It's not what we can see that scares us, it's what we could possibly see but can't prove in any way that scares us. That's true horror, isn't it?
