A few days ago I was talking with a friend on another forum site who is completely obsessed with Twilight, Edward, Bella, and the whole story line. I complained about it and she complained that I'd never given the books a chance. She's right, I'd only read the first chapter of Twilight and then returned the book to the shelf. I've always thought of Twilight as something I would never touch, nor enjoy reading, no matter how old I was.
My friend made a bet with me. If I would read, and thoroughly report on all four books, she would mail me a check for $40, $10 per book. To sweeten the deal, and make it more challenging for me, she said she would give me an extra $20 if I read them all within a week of making the deal. The last two books won't be available in my library until after the bet so we changed the rules to a week tops. Being as ravenous about reading as I am, and never liking to turn down a challenge, I agreed.
I have split the saga into two parts. In the three below posts I will give my thoughts, opinions, and critiques of each book and once I'm done reading all of them, I will do the same for the entire saga. I will not be viewing the movies. I have NO wish to see the terrible acting skills that will ensue and the movies were never part of the bet.
IF you are a Twilight fan; beware. I WILL be vicious with my review. I WILL hold NOTHING back. I'm not trying to upset anyone, I'm simply giving my opinion on subject matter that I believe falls under one of my specialties; literature. If I feel like it I may look into reading the other Twilight related books, and possibly other book(s?) written by S. Meyer. I won't promise anything though.
WARNING: These reviews will be on the LONG side. If you barge in here, throw a TL;DR at me, then go off at me, you WILL be getting an a** ripping. When you enter my threads, either read through the walls of text, to which you then may respond, or Get.Out.

Twilight:
Right from the get-go I KNEW this book, and the ones that followed it, were going to bother the HELL out of me. I finished this book in less than 24 hours. It was VERY easy to read and posed no challenges to guess what was coming next. It was very predictable and I felt like I had already read the book. Meyer's grammar and sentence flow also bothered me.
I find that most authors take plenty of time to describe character's looks, their personalities, background, and habits. Meyer did NONE of these things. Starting on page 2 or 3, we were magically supposed to know what Bella looked like and then informed that her mother looked exactly like the descriptionless main character. Bella also never mentioned any of her favorite things to do, eat, read, or listen to.
I didn't like how all the main male figures that suddenly appeared in Bella's life were attracted to her for her "beauty", which we still had no description of. Yes, I can understand how people would be curious about the new girl in town but I highly doubt that all the boys that would eventually gravitate in her circle of friends would fawn over her only to be heart broken when she decides that she wants to date a vampire.
THIS part really disturbed me. There was an excuse made for why the Cullen children were always missing from school. They were sick, they were camping, blah blah blah. Their school has less than 400 people. That's less than my GRADUATING CLASS. I'm not sure how it worked for you guys but if you were absent for EVEN a day teachers started getting jumpy. Edward and his siblings would be gone for DAYS at a time. Plus, they don't eat food. You can't tell me NONE of the teachers noticed how they never seemed to eat and simply over looked the dark circles under their eyes. Teacher's aren't that oblivious. I don't care how big or small the school is. None of that makes sense. It seems it was merely written that way to fit the plot without putting effort into it.
Edward. Here we go. Of course he would be dazzlingly handsome and amazing at everything he does. He's the lead male. Of course he would have to save Bella, time and time again, from certain death. They're going to one day get married and have many many vampire babies. OF COURSE EDWARD COULD DO NO WRONG! Because he's designed to the TEE to fulfill the fantasies of teenage girls, and I guess house wives, EVERYWHERE. There is NO originality, no thought, no...personality in Edward. He's JUST like every other good guy in every other romance novel out there. He's handsome, strong, smart, loving, protective. I can say these exact same things about James (Silvdragon) except James actually has personality.
Bella. Oh Bella...Firstly, what the hell do you even look like? Do you have freckles? Scars? Stretch marks? Or are you just pale, thin, average height, with dark hair? Hmmm, that sounds sooo UNCREATIVE. Secondly, I have a HARD time believing that one person could be THAT klutzy. I thought I was bad but damn. I'm a ballerina compared to her. Thirdly, you're pretty good in school huh. So let's see. A pale, klutzy, smart girl. Again, UNCREATIVE. You're just like every other girl in a vampire book. Good try sweet heart.
The Cullen Family. I have to admit, I do like that fact that, in Meyer's world, when you turn into a vampire, you bring a select thing with you. Strength, intuition,...mind reading...either way, that was a bit on the creative side. And it also opened a lot of doors for side action through the story, which Meyer caught on to! The rest of the family seem nice enough. Completely uncreative, but nice. Their willingness to help Bella is something MOST people wouldn't jump at the chance to do but granted they ARE vampires and have very few things to worry about so I can see that they would want to help, especially if Bella means so much to Edward that it made him snap out of his little, 90 year, emo phase.
The others. This part brought my hopes up a little. I had been waiting for some rash, vampire fighting but was sadly disappointed when nothing came from it. I was really hoping that Edward would redeem himself by ripping James' throat out right there in the field but sadly, he didn't. THEN the whole mad dash to get Bella away from the scary vampires was completely unnecessary. Why not use Bella as bait, and then the SIX vampires overpower the TWO vampires. ********, I'm pretty sure Emmett could have taken James or Victoria out on his own, let alone help from Esme, Alice, or Jasper. This book was SERIOUSLY lacking action. I literally facepalmed when Bella ran away from Alice and Jasper to go "save her mother" only to find that her mother wasn't there. REALLY Bella? Why didn't you just ask Alice to see what your mother had next planned to do. You would have seen that she wasn't in danger and wouldn't have ended up in the hospital. Oh, and how could Edward stand to suck Bella's poisoned blood when he can barely stand to kiss her? What the ******** Meyer.
New Moon:
Again, was very easy to read. Posed no challenges what so ever, and was predictable. The grammar and sentence flow didn't improve with this new installment.
The thing that really bugged me towards the end of Twilight and the beginning of New Moon was the fact that Edward, would soon have to leave Bella for one reason or another. I didn't like the fact that he was leading her on and then going to dump her. I knew something had to be coming soon, and I was right. Edward dumped her flat on her a** and completely disappeared. Way to go Ed, way to go. The following MONTHS that Bella spent is utter depression was a BIT much. I know what heartbreak feels like and I certainly wouldn't spend MONTHS crying, and screaming my head off about it.
Jacob Black. I knew from hearing people talk that he would have a major role in this saga but I didn't know it started out as a simple crush. This crush which turned into unreturned love, then developed into a dangerous level of protectiveness. This, was uncreative, and completely predictable. A guy falls in love with his best girl friend, who doesn't want anything more than to use him because she already has a vampire boyfriend. As soon as the boyfriend is out of the picture, he moves in but is reeejected. Typical. Moving on to when Jacob changed. Bella was freaking out and I actually caught myself calling her an idiot for believing that Jacob would willingly stop talking to her just because he was mad. SOMETHING important had to be going on. And something important was going on.
Bella's suicidal behavior, coupled with her NEED to have Edward back really made me sick. Yes, I know she was heartbroken and felt like she would never be whole against but I've felt that too, honestly, I have. It didn't turn me into a maniac though. But I suppose there HAD to be a way to reunite Edward and Bella and I guess this fulfilled it.
The Volturi. I thought these guys were going to be cool but they turned out kinda lame, just like the rest of the vampires, and other characters in this saga. I was hoping that Edward was going to rip some throats out to protect Bella but YET again her mystic power of something unknown bests them and they get away unharmed. I know they're going to show up later in the story and I HOPE there will be blood slip. If there's not, I will be disappointed.
I don't have much to say about this one because while a lot DID happen, it was just the same typical BS that I don't feel like going over.

That's rather... stupid. >.>;; -facepalm- So far, the first book sounds a lot like the movie that I watched... O-o; Geesha... No originality, I do agree.

I wouldn't go as far as burning the book. It would be a waste of scarp paper.
Yes, they had no fangs but their teeth were laced with venom.

I never read the books but I did see the first movie just yesterday and there were really only two things that bothered me. First, the vampires sparkle in sunlight like pretty little fairies. It seems to me that vampires generally BURN in sunlight. Second, Ed was climbing trees like a freaking squirrel. I know hes super strong and fast but hes not spiderman. The lack of blood was a let down but this is more of a romance after all.
Anyway, have fun reading the books. I certainly never could read them although thats mainly because in my 19 years of life Ive only ever read one whole book from start to finish >.<

I read the books, I in fact used to enjoy them. But then they became popular and I realized how sucky they were.
Really, the series is just about Bella's choice between Necrophilia and Bestiality. Her crippling need to be in a relationship, both are unhealthy, is what is basically screwing her over in every novel. First book, she almost gets killed, second book she is suicidal and depressed. I see a pattern.
Edwards character is just based on Meyers dream man, it's her fantasy that she won't get to have unless she starts dating Pattinson and they have magically sparkly vampire babies that will kill her for ever thinking of the idea of Twilight, the books that shamed her and her fathers name in disgrace.
Jacobs character is a violent fool who is willing to sacrifice everything for a girl, including his life, for a girl who does not return the feelings and is only using him as a cane and to fill a void until dear, dreamy Edward returns and sweeps Bella back into his arms. How Jacob could possibly be okay with this is beyond me.
Apparently everyone is united in this common bond..Bella. Oh, wait, what, the Volturi? A PLOT TWIST? No. Just more sparkling Vampires. Except..wait...wait..They want to kill Edward? Who would want to kill this lovable, sparkling vampire who everyone seems to fall in love with? Oh my, a crime, a travisty. EDWARD IS DEAD! Oh..wait..no..he isn't..Bella rises out of her depression with a snap of Alice's fingers and a vroom of the stolen Ferrari(I'd press charges, but of course, this is Meyers world) and goes to save the day! Instead of Edward saving the day, Meyer decided to switch it up a little, one of the few times she actually does in the book. She lets Bella save the day, only once though, the rest of the time she is stuck being a damsel in distress.
And so there lies my review of Twilight and New Moon. It could possibly be a review of the whole series though for how much the plot and the writing changes.

Like you really thought I wasn't going to retaliate rolleyes ...I'm not offended, just thought I'd point out a few things but over all good review razz Quote: THIS part really disturbed me. I suppose this is based off an American school, but here, if you have a note from parents or a doctors certificate(Carlisle is a doctor) then the school doesn't really worry :/ they're straight A students and a little time off doesn't seem to phase them. Also the food thing, maybe you didn't get this in the books or maybe it's because you haven't finished the series but, while they were very attractive to the human eye and such, humans stayed well away from them because there vampires and in the book series we apparently fear them and so our naturally fight or flight instinct kicks in so people stayed away from them, including teachers...while yes they do question how odd they are they never look any further into it. Quote: Bella. Bolded bit: I am :/ mayb you're not but dam I trip over my own two feet, nearly broken my neck falling upstairs and have cut myself on sticks :/ Just because you have trouble believing it doesn't make it untrue. Also, I know you read books lizzy so I thought you'd know that choosing to make the popular girl who has everything as the protagonist is rather stupid. I mean who wants to read a book about somebody who already has everything they want in life? Since books are notoriously known to be read by nerds, to but it bluntly, clearly so they can identify with the character, there going to choose the average clutzy nerd girl over the popular princess who has everything she wants. It is simply a novel convention :/ Quote: Their willingness to help Bella is something MOST people wouldn't jump at the chance to do but granted they ARE vampires and have very few things to worry about so I can see that they would want to help You weren't criticizing this but I just wanted to point out, the Cullen family love Bella too. Especially Alice, it's not simply because Edward finally has someone :/ Esme and Carlisle loves her like the daughter she never had, Alice loves her because she seen her in her visions before she even came to forks and thinks of her as her very close sister, Emmett, to him its the little sister he can rag on. Jasper and Rosalie are the only two who are weary of her/dislike her very much. Quote: . Why not use Bella as bait, and then the SIX vampires overpower the TWO vampires. ********, I'm pretty sure Emmett could have taken James or Victoria out on his own, let alone help from Esme, Alice, or Jasper. This book was SERIOUSLY lacking action. Because Edward would never put her in harms way, reguardless if the chance of danger was small, it just wouldn't happen. In my opinion like any boyfriend should. Quote: Oh, and how could Edward stand to suck Bella's poisoned blood when he can barely stand to kiss her? He never wanted her as a vampire, that isn't the life he wants for her, his love for her and his love for her life and saving her is stronger then his erge to suck her blood and kill her. Love is a powerful thing and yeh while it's just a book it's true. Look at You and James, been together 2 years tho you're apart and finally only being together at the end of next week. Love does strange things to people, its the emotion that has no clear definition. Other then those things I pointed out your review was really good. I'm a die hard fan but I accept the fact there are faults in the book and some of it is a bit hard to stomach (esp Eclipse :S ) but, I think you went into reading this books with a mind made up and a judgment in you're head. Though I hope no hard feelings of course, I was simply stating my opinion *hugs* everyones allowed there own, and i respect that thats how you feel about the book ;3 *Will look over New moon review later*

Most of those are valid points but I just can't get over the fact at how CONVIVIALITY everything just seems to work to make Bella's little fantasy possible and how it keeps the Cullens from being outed. It's almost like the school, and the people in the two aren't even NEEDED in the story because they're so blind or just jackasses like Lauren.
And the lack of blood shed seriously pissed me off. Okay, maybe not blood shed but I wanted some decent throat ripping.
