Lilah was gooooood.

She had bribed off her rats (or, specifically, Dexter, who was very open to bribes) to run off down the street, straight into the candy store, after Maggie decided they needed to run to the Farmers Market for (ICK!) veggies. They had been halfway there when she gave 'the signal' to little Dexter, who took off, and moments later (with Lilah, Maggie, Lilah's other 2 rats and her frog in following after) veered into the candy shop, as someone else exited.

He promptly hid, while Lilah pretended to "look" for him. Really, this was all part of her clever clever plan to at least get candy out of this despicable trip.

Dexter had agreed to hide near the popcorn, so Lilah was making her way to the candy apples.

Tarot......wanted to push something over. Something big.

She wasn't given to destructive tendencies, which just went to show how horrible the situation was. She was in a candy shop!! Sev knew she didn't want candy, as she had quite firmly told him five minutes before they entered the shop. Maybe if she'd sensed his devious plan beforehand it would never had come to be.

At the moment she was skulking near the packages of popcorn. They seemed to be the least popular, which meant the least crowded. Tarot also noticed this was the least colorful section of the store, which was as good as it was going to get until Sev finished cooing over the candy apples. The best part was it was close to the door and her escape!

Speaking of the door...... Tarot watched a plump gray rat squeeze in past the shoes of a happy (ugh) customers leaving (yay). It seemed like she was the only one to notice. A shame, the sound of people screaming and running for high grounds would have lifted her spirits. As it was, the rat chose to hide with her in the popcorn section.

Some people, more rats, and a frog came bursting in not long after. From the sound of it, the yellow and pink kid was the rat's owner. Tarot felt some sympathy for the poor rat. She'd run too if her owner was that brightly colored! She wasn't a very perceptive owner either, since she was heading towards the candy apples where Sev was still staring at the fruit on a stick dipped in sweet stuff.

Tarot slid down to sit on the floor, feeling like she was going to be here for awhile. She glanced at the opening where the rat had vanished, figuring he was somewhere under the shelves. "I don't suppose you could run out and scare some people?" Hey, it was worth a shot!

Dexter, the bribed rat, seemed as though he could understand the girl (which may have been the case, he'd had lots of practice with Lilah, after all!), and shook his little gray head. That wasn't part of "the plan". If he got caught now, he wouldn't get his cut of candy that Lilah had promised if he didn't give her a chance to GET it!

Instead, he scurried up to her. She seemed...well, she seemed boring. There didn't seem to be anything on her worth stealing at all. A funny bell necklace hung 'round her neck, but it wasn't that shiny, and Dexter knew it probably wasn't worth much anyway. He paused though, as his delicate ears heard the 'clink!' of coins in her pocket. Now THAT was the jackpot!

He sniffed at her hand, and licked one of her fingers.

He was a gooooood rat (did he take after Lilah, or did she take after him?)

Tarot blinked, just the tinist bit perplexed when the rat came out from under the shelf and shook it's head at her. She'd never seen anything like that before, premonition or otherwise. She even smiled (just a little!) when the rat came up and licked her hand. Sev would have made a funny sound if he had seen that, and then dipped her hand in that disinfectant stuff he carried with him, but she didn't mind. He seemed like such a nice rat! She was more friendly to animals than she ever was with people.

Tarot picked up the rat and plopped him on her leg, scooching backwards a bit so they were both fairly well out of sight and hiding. Sev had moved from the candy apples to the marshmallow creations, and looked like he'd be busy for awhile. The girl Tarot suspected was the owner of the rat also looked reoccupied.

A premonition tickled the back of Tarot's mind, and a couple things clicked into place. Not that any of it made much sense to her, she just knew it was correct. "Your person here to buy some candy," she asked the rat in a whisper.

Dexter's ears perked up at the word 'candy'. Oh yes! Candy! He stared at her for a moment. Well...she hadn't exactly come here to buy candy. At least, not that Maggie knew of, anyway. Dexter had just "happened" to run into a candy show, and he and Lilah knew Maggie well enough to know they WOULD get candy out of this.

He moved up her leg a little, heading for the pocket with the coins. Maybe today he would get both candy AND money!

Lilah had moved away from the candy apples (holding one, of course!) and was now calling around. "Oh Deeeexxxtteeerrr," she said, softly. The second rat, Henry, rode on her shoulder, and couldn't help but giggle to himself. This was great fun!

Dexter watched them walk near to him, but didn't move a muscle. When Lilah had gotten what they came for, she'd come and "find" him.

Tarot watched the rat as he moved closer to her body. His claws tickled! Then the blonde girl began to call out for a 'Dexter'. Tarot looked down at the rat. That was probably this little fellow. And as much as she would love to see the shop thrown into chaos, it would be a shame for him to get killed by an overzealous owner with a broom.

She carefully wrapped her hands around the rodent and reluctantly stood up. She was a small kid, but her pale skin, black hair, and dark clothes helped her to stand out in this bright place.
"I think I got 'im," she said, carefully cupping the rat in her hands and holding him close to her chest.

The grey rat squeaked and then struggled against the giant human's hands. Nooooo! THE PLAAAAN! He wasn't gonna get any candy! And Lilah might get mad at him! And Maggie might get mad at HER, then Lilah would get really mad at him!

He knew he shoulda kept hiding.

Lilah stared at the girl, as she approached her with Dexter. What?? (What kind of girl picked up a rat, anyway? Well...besides her...)

She tried to smile at the girl, as she took him from her. "Oh, gee...thanks." Lilah bent down and released him onto the floor, hissing "Hide BETTER" at him. He nodded and scurried off. No more getting tricked out by interesting girls (Unless they were interesting girl rats!).

Maggie came over, looking (as always) a bit dazed. "Did you find him? I thought I saw three for a minute..."

"Nooooooo, no!" Lilah said. "Just...just your imagination."

"Oh." The redheaded mother blinked and walked off.

Tarot looked at Lilah a little suspciously. "Trick for candy," she asked. She could understand it a little, since she used tricks herself to get Sev to go into bookstores. For some reason he thought she'd be happier in clothes stores, which baffled her.
Not that she'd ever used a rat, as they tended to chew pages, but she had pretty presuasive eyes when she used them. No one stood a chance against her big blue peepers!!!

Lilah, a little flustered that she'd almost gotten caught before being able to profit from this scheme acted a bit harsher than she might have otherwise.

"Duh," she said, making a face. "How ELSE do you get momma's to buy candy?" They certainly weren't about to do it on their own.

She looked back at the girl, returning the suspicious look. Heeeyy. Why was this girl more interested in a rat than in the CANDY all around them.

"Why aren't YOU trying to get your parent to buy you candy?" she finally asked.

Tarot just blinked at the first sentence. The obvious answer was to just ask them for something. But she already knew the response she'd get from the girl. Besides, asking grown-ups for something rarely went well.

She shrugged a little at the question. The answer seemed obvious to her, but Tarot had learned the brightly-colored needed hints. "Sev dragged me in here. He'd love it if I showed some interest in the candy." Tarot rolled her eyes. "That's him over there, by that barrel of bright-stuff." She pointed to the taffy-displays, where Sev indeed was hovering and looking as though he struck gold.

Now Tarot tilted her head, looking at the girl curiously. "You mean you actually want to be here?"

Lilah licked her lips. Oooo, taffy. That was good stuff. Nice and sticky! Great for mess making...not that Lilah TRIED to make messes with her candy, oh no! She studied the man, after staring longingly at the candy. He looked...well meaning, even nice, although Lilah wondered why this girl had called him "Sev" not "Dad". Weird.

For a second time, she wanted to say 'duh!' but refrained this time.

"Of course I want to be here!" she exclaimed enthusiastically, then quickly dropped her voice and looked around conspiratorially. Hope Momma didn't hear that! "Isn't this like...every kids dream place? I mean...other then the toy or book store, maybe." She knew Vance agreed with her! He tried to have candy for breakfast, so she knew she couldn't be that crazy to be in here.

"I get book stores, but candy or toy stores are too crowded and noisy," Tarot stated. The colors didn't sit too well with her either, but it was just an added irritant more than a problem.

"Why you gotta hide from your momma? You're already here, wouldn't she buy you candy?" Sev would have, but she was slowly coming to see that he was just different like that.

"But all the people make it fun!" she replied. "In a crowd, you could meet new and exciting people."

Lilah made a face as she was thinking. "Well...We wouldn't have come in here on purpose. It was," she paused. Well, she may as well tell her. It's not like the girl would go tattling on her. She hoped. "It was our 'plan'. My wats....r-rats," darn those 'Rs'! "They listen to me, and I told them to come in here. Then momma would buy us candy, because...because we're already here?"

((Tarot's changed a bit since the last response. Trying to make her a bit more like a toddler.))

Tarot shook her head, baffled. "Sev made me come in here, he says I gotta be more so-, so-," she frowned, trying to remember the word Sev had used. What was it again? Ah, that's right! "Social," she finished.

Now she examined the girl more. She assumed that most people preferred being outside and in quiet settings, but to be fair this was one of the first times she'd left home. "W'as so great abou' a candy store?" It wasn't meant as a question so much as an invitation for the girl to explain why these places were so special.

Lilah pursed her lips. "Why do grow-ed ups always gotta tell us what we have to be?" she asked, sympathetically. Maggie was always telling her to stop being so dirty (so she liked mud puddles!) and to be nice to Cynthia, even when Cynthia was picking on her rats.

Her eyes grew big. What did she like about candy stores? "Well...there's...there's..." she swept her arms out. "I mean, LOOK. CAN- Oh! Do you not like candy??"

She wasn't sure how to approach that, if the girl didn't. Lilah pointed. "My favorite is the caramel apples! I like readin' and I always eat apples when I do. But then you want sweet stuff, I mean REALLY sweet stuff, right? So caramel apples have the nummy apple AND candy! An' I can only get those here, cuz Maggie burns the caramel."

Every. Single. Time.

"But they have all types of stuff. Maggie likes this funny stuff called 'brittle' an' it's got peanuts and peanut butter and sugar in it! And it crinkles in your mouth. But...if you don't like candy at ALL...I dunno. I guess it wouldn't be that fun. Most kids are too busy eating it as fast as they can, or begging for more to be really sociable..."

It was a clever observation, although Lilah didn't really mean for it to be. She just knew from experience.
