T'vek had never had a head for politics. What happened to Alumanth and her rider was a tragedy, yes... And an act of criminal stupidity on the part of the bronzerider who had instigated the incident. Still, who would have expected the clutching Crimson to pursue the Bronze into the air rather than stay with her eggs? Who could have predicted that a moment of emotional panic would send her between forever?

It was enough to send Taikoth into a frenzy of panic. For nearly an hour after the news, T'vek had been obliged to sit in the cradle of his dragon's forelegs, completely ensconced in suedelike black hide, until Taikoth was convinced that no one was coming to attack them next. It was a chilling reminder to both of them, how fragile the bond of Impression could be. Bound for life to one another, but should one of those lives be lost in a moment's terrible accident... Eventually, Taikoth's low keens had subsided, and T'vek had extricated himself long enough to retrieve a few supplies. He would be eating in the weyr with Taikoth tonight, for both their sakes, so he stopped to grab a meatroll or two and a wineskin without staying to eat. The presence of the Benden riders had been grating, but now their absence was... well, just another reminder of Abigail and Brakiath's fury.

T'vek wished to Faranth that he could simply stand on neutral ground. But there was no neutral ground left in all the Weyr, it seemed.

He paused to grab fresh oil and sweetsand from the stores. A good thorough going-over of Taikoth's hide would be good for both of them.

If only things hadn’t elevated so quickly. It had seemed the entire weyr was looking on them in disfavor, but it hadn’t been all bad. As bothersome as K’la had found it to receive such cold stares in Trine, some of the weyr people had been more open and realized that the dainty greenrider was friendly and meant no harm. Benden was a preferable home, of course, but at least she’d had new people to talk to Yvoth had liked Trine even more. She’d warmed the hearts of a few dragons with her sunny disposition and was terribly pleased with herself over making new friends – even a few atypicals though her rider wasn’t exactly sure she approved.

But now, as K’la climbed onto her dragon’s back, her expression was tense and Yvoth grumbled unhappily. I do not like this. “I know,” K’la answered, but had to push her dragon into taking off. It was a short flight to the weyr, and the moment they landed Yvoth clamped her wings in to her sides and threw her head about, looking for a friendly face. Most of the other beasts were drawing away from her in the main cavern though, or ignoring her entirely. K’la gave her a sturdy pat and strode off, telling Hers that she would make this quick. She passed a few weyrfolk gathering satchels to load upon the green – supplies for their little outpost. She would have to go and make a note about the oil in the supplies room to show she’d picked it up. The stuff was being monitored more carefully now.

She lingered in the doorway of the supply room, chewing her lip and looking about for the clipboard, when she heard footsteps from behind. She glanced back and Yvoth advised her in a private voice. T’vek, rider of black Tiakoth. She forced a smile a little less charming than her standard fare. This was her first time back since the incident and she wasn't sure what to expect. “Evening.”

Taikoth couldn't stay in the weyr. He'd been told to stay, but he was lonely and nervous and he wanted to be as close to T'vek as possible. So the little black, only barely larger than a green himself, slipped down to the main cavern to stand vigil outside the doorway and wait for his rider. He arrived just in time to see Yvoth landing. His bugle of greeting to the green was more cursory politeness than a genuinely friendly overture, but it was better than a snarl... even if the dragon's eyes were whirling a multitude of colors to reflect his tumultuous emotions.

Benden rider in the Weyr, Mine.

That thrice-blasted bronze they left behind?

No. A green. Yvoth. I don't remember her rider's name.

And Taikoth's poor memory strikes again. T'vek though the name Yvoth sounded familiar, but not enough to recall if her rider was one of the decent ones or not. T'vek was forced to be acutely aware of his position as a blackrider, in a way he had never been before... And he didn't like it.

Well, the girl was at least trying to be friendly. And... she was a greenrider. He would not be inclined to look kindly on any Benden bronze right at this moment, but greens were greens were greens, wherever you went. He did not precisely smile, but he did incline his head and offer a polite response. "Evening. Picking up supplies?" His hands fidgeted restlessly with the small bag he was already carrying, an outward sign of his unease.

Yvoth crooned a low, hopeful answer to the black. She almost turned to greet a blue as well, one she’d sunned herself by a few days ago, but the male was already turning away and stretching his wings to take off. Her optimism collapsed half bloomed and she glanced sideways at the black before settling herself on the sands with a disappointed grumble.

Oh good, he didn’t look like he wanted a fight. In a surge of relief, K’la nodded and spoke more quickly than her thoughts were prone to run. “Yes. Since we’ve-“ Been kicked out of the weyr? She faltered, but only for a moment. “Um, settled in the temporary quarters that have been built, we’ve been needing a few things. Yvoth and I are just getting them in bulk so we’ll be less troublesome.” Wincing at coming so close to the subject they were both really thinking about, she glanced about the room. “Could you tell me where the inventory list is? I need to mark that I’ve picked up the oil.”

Be polite, T'vek told his dragon silently. They're only here to pick up supplies, and we'll both be in wherryshit up to our necks if we start trouble.

Taikoth didn't need to be told twice. Yvoth wasn't a bronze giving him orders or a healer trying to poke and prod at him, and so he was not inclined to get his rider in trouble by being hostile. Still... she was Benden. And T'vek was a blackrider. The little dragon was on edge as he sidled cautiously closer to Yvoth, but his words had the tenor of a peace offering. Don't worry too much about them. Riders remember, but we will all forget soon enough.

Inside, T'vek found the inventory list and retrieved it, giving the list a brief glance before handing it over. "Here you go. Is everything, ah..." He paused, just as puzzled as she was about a tactful way to phrase it. "Are the temporary quarters acceptable?"

Yvoth looked back, surprised for a moment that the black had spoken to her. Of all colors to bother with her, it was a black. Maybe he was nice. Me first of all, she answered, sounding half apologetic. I’m only sad because I was getting along so well with them before.

K’la accepted the list with a nod and found her spot to sign. Not wanting to turn away too quickly, she decided to speak a little more. “Not really,” she sighed, giving up on pretence with an indulgent shake of her head. “But we all see the reason for it. We’re all very willing to keep the peace right now out there, but I hope you understand none of us actually condoned that bronzerider’s actions.”
