It had been three days since Alumanth went between, a full day since her rider had followed her into death. The Weyr had been simmering ever since--it had been bad enough when all they'd had to worry about were nosy Healers, strangely behaving flits, and whispers of plots afoot in the shadows. But the death of a dragon--slain by another dragon--it was nearly unheard of. There had been accidents in the past, yes...nothing like this. Those were the thoughts numbing his head as greenrider E'lai poured another glass of wine, for him and S'ren both. The stores had been very liberal with the allotment after the accident, and as long as the riders drunk themselves to stupor instead of fury no one seemed to mind.
"What I don't understand," E'lai said, frowning, "is why they're still here." He hadn't forgotten speaking with the others at dinner back then, what felt like ages ago--something had been going on. He didn't think that this had been planned (no dragonrider could premeditate the killing of another dragon--the idea was absurd) but...whatever was going had to still be going on. The Healers remained, though fewer of them. Some of the Benden riders remained. There had to be something they were remaining for...was it just the Hatching? To see what legacy poor Alumanth's eggs yielded?

"The question on everyone's mind, I am sure," S'ren said with a heavy sigh, gratefully accepting the refill from his friend. "Those Healers are still continuing on as before, even if more cautiously now." It had troubled him before that he had been unable to find out any more useful information concerning what the Healers had been arguing about before, but in light of recent tragedy it had hardly seemed relevant. Still though, he hadn't had a chance to speak with E'lai for a small while now, so perhaps the other might have picked up something useful himself. "Have you heard anything odd concerning them? Or firelizards perhaps?"
The strange argument from before was very much the last thing on Tereth's mind right now, as the Brown was still rather sullen over recent events. Even though dragons were know to have poor memory spans, things as big as a fellow dragon and rider's death stuck about for quite a while. Perched comfortably atop of his head was the small Crimson his had acquired-- another inadvertent reminder of the tragedy. He wasn't saying all too much at the moment, half listening to the conversation taking place and half lost in his own thoughts on the matter.

"All sorts of odd things, though nothing that sounds actually believable," E'lai said with a sigh, taking a swig. "There's rumors about saying that Benden or the Healers or the both of them were--are--trying to carry off an egg. I didn't think anything of it at all until one of the Candidates--Salin, he's weyrbred--said something about overhearing talk of egg stealing...probably in some sort of jest, but that's not the sort of thing anyone ought to be joking about." He ran a hand through his long hair, shaking his head. "I'll be glad for the Hatching and for them to just leave." It'd be better if they'd leave before the Hatching, and let Trine mourn and celebrate in its own way. It didn't look like Trine would get the luxury of being left to itself, though.
Eltimioth's tail twitched irritably as she lay beside Tereth outside her rider's weyr. First the plots--and she was sure, unlike E'lai, that serious egg-stealing plots were afoot. And then poor Alumanth--the nerve of those Benden dragons! She'd've perched near where they were sequestered and sat there hissing all day if Brakiath hadn't made it clear such things wouldn't be tolerated. A pity, that...

S'ren actually let out a dry laugh at the egg stealing theory. "Wouldn't that be an ironic twist of fate-- Benden stealing a queen egg from a southern Weyr." He was referring to an event he remembered from his candidate history lessons that had happened back in the... 9th Pass? Yes, most likely, where the 'Old' Southern Weyr had stolen a gold egg from Benden and nearly started a war between dragons. "I would hope they wouldn't try something as completely foolish as that." Then again, that Bronzerider's actions hadn't fallen anywhere along the lines of 'wise', so it might be best to keep an eye out just in case.
Tereth rumbled at the speculation of egg theft. If they so much as took one egg we would hunt them back down to their own Weyr for it, he said to the group, eyes whirling with agitation once more. Brakiath will not let them near the clutch though. She is a watchful mother. His tone held much respect for the Gold who had had to deal with so much recently. Her position was well-earned.

"Ironic indeed," E'lai said wryly. "But it's no secret that there does seem to be a difference between us and them--even Queens transferred north not preforming as they ought to. There must've been a better way to solve their problem without letting things get to this point...if that's even what's driving them."
We would hunt, yes, Eltimioth agreed, her own eyes whirling in determination. And the problem is clear--they do not have any issue with letting dragons die in the egg, so why would they take issue to killing one they believe should not exist? We were all born for the same purpose--but while they believe elsewise, we will never agree.
He didn't like the venom, but he had to agree with what she meant. The schism of belief ran deep, and if the fight between Alumanth and the bronzerider really had begun with insults against the crimson...it only told them how much further they had to go. "We can only hope some good will come from this."

"Whether a queen went north before or after hatching, I hardly think that should make a difference," he said with a frown, taking a sip of the wine. "If dragons from the same source prove to be less fertile in one place than another, it is clearly their environment that is creating an issue. Even if all of the resources stay the same, the people, climate, and fellow dragons are not."
So it would seem, Tereth agreed with what felt like the dragon equivalent of a sigh. I just don't get the color discrimination at all. A Black is no less valuable than a Blue, and the same applies to Crimsons and Silvers. Why look down upon your fellow dragon?
"'Out of all bad comes some good'," S'ren quoted with a faint smile. Although when you were in the midst of the bleak times it was often much harder to see the good.

"I'd hope it's not the people or dragons, but who knows if there's been something in the climate--a physical cause would be the easiest to remedy...in a manner of speaking," E'lai said, shrugging. If it turned out to be some kind of infertility-causing plague, on top of everything else--that would be a bit much.
Because they are too busy thinking of their past success to realize the future relies on more than empty promises. When Thread returns, they will be sorry for the lack of them! Eltimioth seemed almost savagely smug in her statement.
"Or maybe by then they'll have seen the error of their ways," E'lai said softly. It probably depended how far off Thread's reoccurrence really was.

"Hard to say," S'ren replied. "Seeing them in action against Thread might help go a long way in changing their minds though." The only way in which the Atypicals were different from other dragons was simply in their physical weakness at birth. That passed as they grew though, and as adults they were just as reliable as any of the other colors.
Indeed, Tereth agreed. The dragon could only hope that someday this nonsense would cease. In the meantime though they had to deal with the here and now. Eltimioth, have you heard any other rumors aside from the egg theft theory? he asked, suddenly just as curious as his rider to see if more information couldn't be had. The last thing they needed was for any more tragedy to strike.

I have not-- Eltimioth began, but stopped midthought, head swerving to the entrance of the weyr with rapt attention.
E'lai jumped about half a foot when the firelizard egg warming by the hearth gave a loud crack, and he rushed over to its side, grabbing a few meatrolls he'd gotten for evening refreshment on his way. He'd been checking it thrice daily (Eltimioth wouldn't let him forget) but somehow until this moment it had once again slipped his mind. The egg gave another crack--Eltimioth was snaking her head in the entryway to get a better look--and then the kreeling came as a golden firelizard emerged from the shattered shell. E'lai sat there in absolute awe for a moment.
I told you I chose the best, Eltimioth said smugly. Now feed it!
E'lai hastened to comply, and tried not to get his fingers nipped off by the starving flit. "Slow down, there's plenty more," he said soothingly, though the gold (like Eltimioth he thought with a snort) seemed to pay him little mind in her quest for a full belly.

S'ren was equally surprised by the unexpected crack, but as the egg began to hatch he kept himself well back and away so that whatever lie inside would focus only on E'lai. Tereth remained where lay, but Ruby was not so content to stay out of view. The little crimson fluttered off of his head and inside the weyr to take up her favorite post on S'ren's shoulder to watch the action. She let out a chirp of welcome to the young queen when she finally emerged. "She's beautiful, E'lai," the brownrider remarked after a moment of watching his friend feed the newly hatched flit. "Looks like Elti really did pick a winner. Golds are supposed to be the most intelligent when it comes to firelizards." Ruby cocked her head inquisitively at her human's statement before trilling another kind note to the little gold.
She will likely be easier to train, Tereth replied in agreement, looking in the direction of the action even if he couldn't actually see the gold from where he lay.

"I suppose Eltimioth might have better luck getting a gold to find her shiny things than one of the more distractable sorts," E'lai agreed wryly. The little gold had soon had her fill and scrambled up E'lai's arm remarkably nimbly when one accounted for her distended belly, and then settled herself on the greenrider's shoulder with a questioning trill of her own back to Ruby. "She'll be Kirel," he added, stroking the hatchling carefully along the back.
I shall have E'lai-mine teach her many tricks, Eltimioth said with a happy rumble.

You might be able to help with the training as well, Tereth suggested. That way she becomes more accustomed to both of you. He and His hadn't really done much 'training' of Ruby thus far other than getting her to actually stay away and let them be for a few hours whenever they were busy with drills and Weyr business and such. They were fortunate that she was a reasonably well-behaved flit on her own.
S'ren smiled as he watched the agile young gold who had mounted herself atop of E'lai's shoulder. "Kirel is a nice name, and she probably would be a bit easier to train for such tasks. If you need help for any reason though do feel free to give us a call. I haven't done much training with Ruby myself, but she's a bit older now at least."
Said flit trilled and crooned out a small happy tune back to Kirel. It was a simple little tune, but very pleasant nonetheless. The crimson was genuinely happy to see the baby gold.
The Brownrider looked surprised for a brief moment as he listened to the Crimson's trilling, but then he smiled and stroked her on the eye ridges affectionately. "Clearly she's been spending too much time with Tereth listening to the Harpers," he remarked. Outside, Tereth said nothing, but the Brown's eyes whirled clearly with amusement.

Perhaps all of us shall train them both together, Eltimioth agreed. I am sure the little crimson one can learn many tasks. There was no telling what the green dragon was secretly plotting behind whirling blue eyes, but she was definitely going to be up to something.
Kirel cocked her head to one side as she listened intently to the song, and made an attempt of echoing back before deciding she'd overexerted herself and flopped her head down making a little whuff sort of noise that sounded remarkably like a sigh. E'lai couldn't help but chuckle at her. "Give it a few days, then, I'm sure you'll be able to manage the same," he reassured her. Kirel did not seem to be listening, for she'd closed her eyes and appeared to be quite soundly asleep.
"Nothing wrong with listening to Harpers," he added with a grin, "but if Ruby persists in her singing, you're going to have that Harpergirl Akaya politely demanding you help with that choral group of hers. Though, given Tereth, you're probably already doomed..."

"Doomed?" S'ren replied with a laugh. "I don't quite see how. I have no problem with Tereth and even Ruby possibly joining, but I have no intention of doing any singing myself."
You have a nice voice, Mine. You should use it more often.
For you in private, fine, but I am not going to be singing in front of others, he replied flatly.
You join in at Gathers.
That's different. That's in a group.
A choir is a group.
You know very well what I mean.
Ruby cocked her head at Kirel's sigh and sent a coo of encouragement to the other, emotion supporting it. She would be able to sing too!
Still seeming rather amused, Tereth slowly stood up from where he lay and stretched out a bit. Eltimioth, perhaps you should consider asking Yours to join as well. The more the merrier after all.
S'ren nearly had to laugh. It seemed even his friends weren't safe from the music-loving Brown's influence.

"Judging by that lengthy silent discussion you just seem to have had, I repeat myself--doomed!" E'lai said, taking note of the all too familiar glazed eye look everyone got when speaking to their dragon. He hadn't expected Tereth to try and rope Eltimioth in, but really he shouldn't be surprised at all... "I don't know if she has the attention span. Or the ability to make anything resembling music, considering she prefers simply to be loud. I've gathered from my scant experience with Harpers that loud is not good in group singing. Humming. Whatever it is you'd be up to."
Eltimioth made a whuffish-snorting noise of protest at the slight to her character. I can be very attentive when I want to be. And I bet a better singer than most too!
"That would be your ego talking, my lovely green," E'lai said wryly. "Of course if there's a competition, you'll try your best if only to win bragging rights."
And I am not fit to be bragged about? Eltimioth asked slyly. E'lai rolled his eyes.
