Salin was a little too tired and maybe a little too frustrated to be quite as subtle as he normally at least pretended to be, and was eying the flits and arrivals from Benden, if not with reportable hostility, at minimum with a unnerving intensity from someone who otherwise made it his business to be pleasantly in the background, looking good.

He'd actually considered chucking a dinner roll at one or two of the flits, in the annoyed hope that the little creatures might drop something they shouldn't have had to begin with, or forget whatever it was they were supposed to pass along, but the chances were far greater that they'd just blink 'between' long enough for it to hit someone else (Like the Candidate-Master, a thought that made him shudder wink and then reappear long enough to steal his roll. All in all a massive waste of energy.

Mostly he was just frustrated at his lack of findings, which left him feeling as though there wasn't really anyone he could discuss things with, even if he wanted to. (Which he did, for a change.)

He couldn't do anything without more information, and he didn't have it. It made him feel so ineffectual he might as well have hung on a peg somewhere and forgotten about like an old shirt.

"Don't do it," E'lai advised, sliding into a seat across from Salin, reaching for a roll of his own. He didn't know Salin well, but they were close enough in age and there weren't that many weyrbrats, so he could read through the lines of the candidate's frustration pretty easily. "Whatever it is, it can't be worth the consequences." He'd already heard about Candidatemaster O'rer pulling a candidate out of the Hatching, and he couldn't be surprised. There was just too much tension, and things likely wouldn't settle down until after the Hatching.

((OOC: if it's ok with everyone I'll leave posting order loose, just so long as we don't start leaving people behind.))

Salin tore his gaze from one of the Benden healers with a blink, and then heaved an considerable sigh, leaning back in his seat. "It would be a waste of a good roll." He admitted. "Besides I don't throw that well."

It was somewhat unlike him to make jokes about something that might actually offend, but these were the kinds of times they were. He remembered E'lai well enough in passing, and that he'd impressed, (The lucky @#@*#), but otherwise wasn't that close.

"They just...bother me." he admitted with a frown. "They're up to something." He added, with an flash of a deeper frown. "I'm sure of it."

Well, that mattered a great deal he was sure. Mighty all knowing Candidate Salin had an suspicion. Alert the Weyrleaders... or not.

Ca'mil had been passing by the table with her own dinner when she over heard the conversation and it wasn't hard to deduce just what it was they we're finding bothersome - I mean the irritated looks being flung at the Benden flits and sometimes the healers themselves weren't really all that hard to miss.

Reversing directions she plopped herself down beside the pair." What makes you say that?" She inquired as the one - Salin she thought his name was remarked about them being up to something. She was sure they were too and finally maybe she'd run across someone who had seen something of their own to share.

The smell of roasting meats, flits zooming around, and people chatting up with their friends brought the trader, Silbakor, and his sister, Optheli, to the main caverns for dinner. Of course he could have insisted they eat with their caravan. He knew 'Theli would obey, but like her he also wanted to mingle around. It wasn't often they had spare time when visiting the Weyr. Not only that he was on a sort of stealth uncover mission.

Pausing at the entrance, he took a sweeping gaze around the room. It looked fairly well crowded tonight even to his eye. He saw a fairly open table and pointed to it. Coming closer, Silbakor saw that they couldn't be more than weyrbrats and relaxed a little.

Optheli paused by her brother, trying to take in all the sights. It was so more noisy than their usual caravan. Not so much loud noisy as busy noisy. She blinks then her usual cheerful look takes its place on her face. There was just so many people here! Surely one or two would like to talk to her, maybe even be friends.

When her brother pointed out a nearly empty table she nods and follows. A little disappointed that he, of course, chose the empty one; still there was a couple kids at it. Maybe more would come in if they didn't feel like chatting. She could always hope.

"My dragon is convinced someone's plotting to carry off the queen egg," E'lai said, rolling his eyes, "but neither she nor the others she'd gossiped with have a shred of proof, just whispers. I doubt it's really anything of the sort, but strange rumors have been going around. It's enough to make one wonder if there's any truth to them." He gave Ca'mil a nod of acknowledgment--she was in S'ren's wing, wasn't she?

Salin looked like he'd manage to choke on his roll if he'd been eating one when the Crimson rider approached the table, and cleared his throat awkwardly. "I.. I just...they were talking and one of them said something about 'Getting it over with', and something about the Old Queens production..."

The comment about someone trying to steal the gold egg sent chills down his spine as he added. "...One of them actually did say something about stealing eggs. They laughed, but it wasn't a 'hah hah thats funny' sort of laugh. It was an 'Oh shards thats terrifying' sort of laugh. It's all... bits and pieces though. Not enough for me to prove anything. And then one of those sharding flits popped in and they hurried away."

It was more than he'd discussed to date, but the entire thing had been wearing on him for days, and the idea that even the dragons were worried lent it a touch more of a worrisome edge.

"They can't, can they? I mean there's no way they could steal an egg, right?" Surely going between would kill it, even if they could get past the angry mothers.

He recognized one of the traders by sight, he bought some occasional bits and pieces and scarves from one of them, brought back from their wanderings.

The two traders strolled over and took seats nearish the group of weyrfolk. Silbakor gives a slightly friendly nod to the others at the table. For a moment his eyes linger on Salin. His main focus right now was eating. Chatting could certainly wait. He signaled a drudge for wine and more meats. In the meanwhile he stabbed a left over piece with his knife and started to munch.

Optheli was as interested in them as her brother seemed uninterested. Certainly the food could wait. She blinks as she hears one mentioning the stealing of an egg. "Can they really do that?" She pipes up without really thinking about it. The weyrs were suppose to work on their own. How could they contemplate egg stealing?

Her eyes scan the table for answers.

"Cheryth is mostly concerned about how much time the healers have been spending on the sands" She told the other's although the mere thought of them trying to steal the queen egg was enough to make her rumble angrily from where she was perched sunning herself 'there are many dragons keeping an eye on the sands' she reminded her crimson 'they wouldn't dare try' she soothed her before turning her attention back to the others. It was interesting that someone else had noticed then rushing off when the flits showed up...and some of the things they seemed to be talking about were enough to send chills up her spine. "They wouldn't dare try, I mean it would be crazy - insane even." She allowed, I mean they had what six dragons at the Weyr? Six against the entire weyr seemed a bit unlikely to succeed..right?

"S'ren and I were talking after practice one day though - and we saw that Healer fellow arguing with one of his subordinates about communication between the Weyrs and waving some papers about. He seemed really irked and clearly mad about something to do with the Weyrleaders and I'll tell you that clipboard of his has gotten huge - it can't possibly be all notes on the eggs...and then..like you said one of those dratted flits jumped in and the subordinate rushed off."

"I wonder what would happen if we tried to get ahold of that clipboard." Salin wondered, propping his chin on his hand. They had flits of their own at Trine. Flits were known to steal now and then... but...

"...It would just get us in trouble though." He lamented, with a frustrated growl as he picked at one of his braids. If there was a way to even try that tact, he wasn't sure of it. He was better at planting himself to overhear things, not other forms of information gathering.

He frowned further, wondering if there were a way to ingratiate themselves with one of the Benden riders or healers. Could they sufficiently do something like that to gain information? It seemed at least as much of a stretch as everything else.

"I don't understand though, it's... implausible at best that they manage to steal an egg, and how would they safely move it if they did?" Surely they'd need a grown dragon to take an egg, and the clutching queen and crimson would never allow it, especially not the furious crimson. "...What else do they hope to learn from spending so much time on the sands?"

They'd mentioned gathering data, but surely the lay out of the sands wasn't so different from that at Benden? Was it the workings of Trine that they were curious about? But how could that be so much different either? And the flits...

Everything about the behavior of the people of Benden added up to something that stunk, but he couldn't put together an solution that sanely explained it. Maybe they really were sufficiently mad that they would try something as crazy as trying to steal an egg. Could they get information enough to a grown dragon for it to between in, grab an egg, and between out?

Optheli scoots a little closer to the others and tries to draw her brother with her. She really wanted to know what they were talking about. It was about the Benden healers and she was dying to know if it had any connection to what they'd heard. She gives it another try. "You don't think the healers will try to Impress the eggs do you?"

Silbakor gives a slight sigh. He knew of his sister's inquisitive and friendly nature. She just couldn't sit things out. He gives her a pained look that she doesn't see. One of them looked like a rider. Maybe he could ask her after all if she'd heard anything. He clears his throat and waits for a moment of lull.
