Patroclus was excited about the upcoming day today. His sisters would be busy with their warrior training leaving him to spend the bay bonding with his father. Achilles had promised to teach him a great number of things today on the promise that he didn't share any of it with his sisters or mother. Patroclus was more than willing to keep these secrets from his siblings as it allowed him some special one on one time with his father.
Earlier in the morning he had tagged along with Iosef and Glacier to see what the life of a slave was like. It looked like hard work but Patroclus wasn't against doing hard work. But he also knew his father wished for him to do other things, to be better than a slave. And that was the purpose of today. Padding forward Patroclus made his way to his fathers den. He wondered why he lived so far out here instead of in the main den area, but never once questioned it. If father wanted him to know the reason then he would tell him. "Father!" He called out happily as he got close to the den.

Achilles had been waiting for his young son to arrive, he was typically a punctual pup and while he might be a touch later then Achilles would have liked in arriving - he couldn't really fault the boy. It wasn't the pups fault that he had other duties after all - that he was allowed to take part in this training was something Achilles did not want looked after too closely...so he was willing to over look a bit of lateness. No point causing waves when he was still getting what he wanted.
"Patroclus" He greeted him as he came forth, rising with a stretch and a yawn "How was your morning?" He asked vaguely curious for if nothing else Achilles regretted not being able to watch over his son while he was with the main pack - but frankly the less time he spent with the sisters the better for all of them.

Running forward Patroclus jumped, hoping to land on his father as he rose to stretch. "It was alright. I got all my chores done." Letting out a playful bark Patroclus playfully nipped at Achilles, being able to roughhouse was one of the benefits of getting some alone time with his father, since he couldn't exactly do that with the sisters. "So what are we learning today?" He asked enthusiastically with a wag of his tail.

Achilles chuckled slightly and let his son launch himself at him, feigning a stagger and cower at the roughhousing before reciprocating by rolling him over with one large paw. He doubted the boy got many chances to play like this with his sisters - it would probably be seen as inappropriate, but at least he had a father who encouraged such things and didn't cower about like the other males did.
"i thought I might leave that up to you - what do you wish to learn today?" He asked the pup, when he was a teen perhaps Achilles would spirit him away for trips outside the pack lands but for now they would make do with learning in the expanse of the pack lands.

As his father easily rolled him over with a large paw Patroclus let out a growl, though it certainly wasn't all that threatening. Of course all thought of play was momentarily interrupted by his fathers offer to let him choose the days activities. There were so many possibilities, it would be hard to choose just one.
"Can you teach me to hunt?" He asked and then immediately followed it up with several other questions asked in rapid succession. "Can we go exploring? Do you think we will see a deer? Are there any bears here?" There were several other questions he wished to ask but for now he held them back.

Hunting...Achilles could live with hunting it was certainly not the worst activity he could have come up with and it would teach him valuable skills. Skills far more valuable then den cleaning and trash clearing anyways. "Hunting will work" He agreed with a slight nod of his head as he listened to Patroclus babble on in his excitement. "There are certainly bears in these parts" He told his son thoughtfully "Though we might should save that talking lesson until our a touch older" He concluded with a chuckles. "A deer..now I think we might be able to track on down for you to see..and you can learn stalking and tracking in the process"

Tail wagged as his father agreed to a hunting lesson. So far only the sisters went out on the hunts, and even then his siblings weren't allowed to tag along as they were too young. So the chance to going hunting with his father, even if they didn't end up catching anything, would be a great experience. "Great!" He barked and then took a couple of steps back. "So where do we start?" His knowledge of hunting and stalking was limited so far to overhearing the sisters discuss what to hunt before they went out and their initial departure from the den sight.

Well the answer seemed obvious to Achilles and he had to remind himself that it wouldn't be so obvious to such a young pup - especially one who was most likely left out of such discussions given the position his gender relegated him to. Thankfully...Achilles choose to ignore those rules when he saw fit to do so and Pen didn't seem to care as long as he didn't step on someone's toes to badly. Really though what warrior wolf in this pack would admit to being outsmarted by a male should it ever happen? not many - and so Achilles thought himself fairly safe in that regard.
"All hunts start in the same place" He told his son as he started off into the woods knowing the pup would follow. "you must locate you prey. Where do you think we are likely to find a deer?" He questioned his son. It was important to make him think rather then simply provide all the answers, young wolves needed to learn how to think for themselves.

As his father began walking, Patroclus fell into step with him, or at least he tried to. Achilles' legs were much longer than his own so it took the occasional leap or burst of speed to truly keep up. At the question Patroclus paused to think. Where would you find deer? Well they ate mostly grass and other plants, so it made sense for them to be where their food was. Opening his mouth to answer Patroclus noticed that his father had gotten a good distance away from him. Chasing after him, tail wagging slightly, the mottled pup barked his answer. "They are in the clearings and the meadows, where all the grass is." Hopefully this was right and if not well then he would just figure it out until he was right.

Achilles had never thought his son to be a dullard - still it was good to see the young pup stop and think a bit before answering. Sure your instinctual thoughts were generally good ones but it was good to practice some impulse control and think things through once in a while too. And his answer wasn't terrible either - it made sense that they would be where their food was.
"That they are for the most part" He agreed "Do you think they spend all day there or do they go elsewhere when the sun is too hot?" He asked after a few moments of silence. "You must know your prey's movements so that you can find them easily at any time it is needed" He told his son as they continued through the forest. "Do you think while you do your chores you can keep any eye out for the wildlife you see? Figure out why they are there and what they are doing? Learn their habits?"

"Well..." He started as he continued to follow his father. "When it's hot we go to our dens for shade...so the deer might go to the forest to rest in the shade. Or..." He paused once more thinking about what else one did when it was hot. "maybe they go to the river to drink. I know I get thirsty when it's hot." Once again the answers made sense to him but it all boiled down to whether his father said they were right or not.
Of course his next instructions made him nod. "Yes, I can do that." Watching the wildlife while worked seemed like an easy enough thing to do and would perhaps help him pass the time during his chores.
