This dates back to 2003, and it's a REALLY stupid reason when you think about it in 2010, but letters had collector value. I reckon that the reason has totally faded now, but the tradition is still sticking around.
The reason for buying them as investments is a little more obvious: You don't have to guess which item is going to perform better.
