The dying rays of daylight did nothing to improve the lone figure's current mood. How could something that was supposed to be lovely alleviate the bloated feeling that the unicorn mare constantly lived with now? Sure she was excited about becoming a mother - but was she ready for the responsibility of raising foals?
Those answers she would learn in time. However there was a more worrying doubt running through Lyrical Sky's mind at the moment. Would any of her offspring acquire what she yearned for as a filly? The very gift of flight that was denied to her. Back then she might have hid her disappointment well - but now ... the jealous feeling was being eclipsed by something stronger - anger.
It would not do to dwell on such thoughts though at the moment. With a little bit of effort Lyrical rose to stand - her form being silhouetted by the sunlight as it set for the evening.

Humming softly to herself as she padded slowly through the foliage, Hakumei smiled gently. Life was truly perfect.. for after trying for so very long, she and her mate had finally been blessed with a family. Just remembering the look on Duzi's face when she had discovered their wish had finally been granted made her giggle softly. They had both almost given up hope, but it had finally happened!
Giggling softly to herself she glanced back at her rotund belly, amber eyes warm with a mother's love. It would not be long now... she could feel them moving, restless, incessant in their actions as if eager to finally be born into the world. Excitement at the thought welled up within her. What would they be like? Boys or girls? Two or three? Joy filled her chest and brought the shimmer of tears to her eyes at the thought of them. So very long... so many times of disappointment and heart break... but finally, they would be a family.
Wincing as one of the unborn foals kicked, she chuckled softly. "Impatient, little one?" Smiling serenely, she resumed her walk, the destination was a small shallow lake, but her journey there was unhurried, just enjoying the coolness of the day and the chance to stretch her legs. She knew she had worn Duzi out of late, with all the hormonal swings that being pregnant brought, but she knew he was close at hand if she needed him, and the thought of her mate warmed her.
Dipping her head under a low branch she stepped out of the darkening shadows of the trees, moon-like eyes falling upon the figure lit up by the last of the sun's rays. Pausing mid-step, she blinked against the warm glow, wondering who it was and if she had interrupted them. Maybe she should go around? Yet that curiosity that had got her into so very much trouble as a young mare was still with her, even though she was grown and mature now, and so with another step, she eased her bulk from the brush and smiled a friendly greeting. "Hello there."

Lyrical Sky's ears flicked back as the sounds of another creature's passage through the foliage alerted her to the fact that she was no longer alone. The greeting confirmed that this was not Zephyrus but a stranger. With the dying light of day behind her Lyrical made a slow half turn. The scant light that remained illuminated her condition as she observed the mare a short distance away. Her horn cast off a dim glow as she caught the roundness of the stranger's stomach - and Lyrical sighed softly. Another expecting mother.
Dipping her head in greeting Lyrical Sky spoke softly. "Greetings," here the mare paused. What else could she say? She didn't know this mare and it would be awkward enough carrying on a conversation if she pretended that she did. Instead Lyrical chanced another look at the pregnant mare before deciding on a topic that could be safely navigated.
"I see you're also expecting. Forgive me if the question is too intrusive - but are you nervous at all?"

Ears pricking, Hakumei smiled warmly to the mare at the other's greeting. Picking her way forwards to a more comfortable speaking distant, really not a fan of calling out across a large space, she stopped a few paces from the other mare, head canting to one side and amber eyes friendly.
"No forgiveness necessary." She replied softly, smiling gently as she glanced back at her full belly. "I guess I am, but I'm excited too." Looking back at the unicorn, ears pricked in a friendly manner. "How about you?" She had already noticed the stranger was as round as herself, and guessed she too was expecting. Though it was a bit of a surprise, Hakumei was suddenly glad, for as much as Duzi stood by her, he couldn't understand why at times she was grumpy, or had strange cravings in the middle of the night, or the need to sleep quite as much as she did...
"Is this your first time?" Hakumei asked gently, nodding softly to the mare's swollen side.

Lyrical's ears canted back briefly before she relaxed. Her tail swished idly as she listened to the other mare. 'Go figure. Finding another mare who is about to go through the same process I am.' Lyrical mulled this thought over for a minute before realizing that she had yet to answer.
"It is my first time as well," Lyrical glanced at her rounded frame before continuing, "I am extremely nervous that I may do something wrong. I think it is the worry of all new mothers though." Canting her neck to the side Lyrical rubbed her horn gently against her stomach before sighing softly. Standing around in the sub-darkness that night brought was refreshing but also labor intensive. The force that gravity bore down seemed to increase exponentially as time passed.
Casting a swift glance to the sky Lyrical caught the light trail left by a streaking meteor and she sighed. "Who do I have the pleasure of meeting? I'm Lyrical Sky."

Hakumei smiled softly, amber eyes warm and full of the gentleness that had finally melted her mate's heart. For she was a caring creature, and age had calmed her thirst for adventure, though she was still giving her mate the run around on a fairly regular basis. Such as tonight.
Listening quietly she nodded, tail flicking against her own swollen side. "I know my own mother told em that she was nervous too.. but its such a great gift to be given.. I can only be excited. I am certain nothing will go wrong. And Duzi will be with me, as I am sure your mate will be with you, no?"
Blinking at the question Hakumei blushed warmly, dipping her head in abashed apology. "Oh, forgive me... I am Hakumei. Its a pleasure to meet you Mrs Sky." She replied, smiling in a friendly manner.

Lyrical grimaced slightly at Hakumei's greeting. There was just something about how Mrs Sky didn't sit right with her. Chuckling softly to cover up her small gaffe Lyrical spoke softly, "I prefer to go just by Sky Hakumei. It's alright for you didn't know."
Playing back the mare's words in her mind Lyrical had to nod in agreement. "My mother and grandmother have mentioned the same feeling of excitement. It's just - I don't know. I feel different about being a part of a family with the father being a winged Soquili. I have nothing against the father personally. Zeph has so far been a sweetheart."
Here Sky broke off. What would Hakumei think about her if she told the real thoughts that she was contemplating? Lyrical ducked her head to grab a mouthful of grass. What sort of mother would already be fearing what her children looked like?

Hakumei blushed, the colour staining her blue cheeks purple. "Ahh I am sorry... " Dipping her head in apology, she hoped the other mare wasn't offended. Ears pricking as Sky continued, Hakumei found her self becoming puzzled, tail brushing absently against her flank as she considered the other mare's words. After all, her own family was hardly normal, with her father belonging to the sea and her mother with the stars in the sky... both without horn, fin or wing.
"A wind?" Questioning softly Hakumei tilted her head. "I'm don't really understand... you love him no? I think thats all that matters for a couple. So long as they love and support each other. Duzi, my mate, is an angeni. I am from a water-bred line..." Blinking, puzzled, she looked back at the unicorn mare.

Lyrical nodded softly in response to Hakumei's words. Her horn gave off a gentle glow as darkness settled in around them.
"I'm happy with Zeph at the moment - but I've had this small problem of jealously. All my life I've felt as though I was denied the gift of flight. Both my parents were Unicorns but my father's line had Winds in his family lineage. My brother, aunt and grandfather all possess wings. And here I am wingless. I can't help feeling I was cheated. Even though I am happy with Zeph I can't help but begrudge his wings."
Folding her legs Lyrical sank to the ground and let Hakumei digest her words. She nibbled on a blade of grass before speaking softly again. "Am I horrible for being like that? For being afraid that I might be jealous of my children too?"

Soft golden moon-eyes followed the mare a she settled down, and after a moment, Hakumei padded over and carefully lowered her own swollen body to the warm earth. Tilting her head she smiled gently at Sky, nosing her mane lightly in comfort. "No, your not horrible. I am sure you will be a good mother to them weather they have wings or not." Lifting her head she looked up at the sky, watching the last hues of her sunset bleed across the sky. If the mare beside her represented the star-studded sky a night, Hakumei was the rich warmth of sunset, her coat reflecting the hues of light across the sky as if she truly was born of the dieing sun.
"I think it is normal for us to dream of what we can not have... striving to better our lives and that of our families is natural, and without it there could be no progress in the world." Dropping her gaze back to the dark-hued mare beside her she smiled gently. "Take you for instance, you have that horn and tail. Ive heard that some of those like you can heal wounds... I think thats a wonderful ability, for you can aid others in their time of need. Me... I am just a regular mare, I have nothing special about me at all. No horn, no wings, no fins, no power to change the world around me.. yet Duzi loves me. I don't know why he does, but every day I am thankful for it." Glancing back at her belly she flushed faintly, then lifted her gaze back to Sky.
"Of course I'd love to fly, or be able to heal. But we are who we are... you wouldn't be the mare you are if you had had wings, and maybe Zeph wouldn't have fallen for you then."

Lyrical Sky blinked suddenly. Now this was something to think about. She knew that she had the power to heal injuries as she was always given herself a brief nuzzle now and then if she had injured herself. Of course she was always careful in her decision of when to use the power of her horn.
Her gaze ticked towards the now dark sky as she internally warred against her stubbornness and her desire to put faith in Kumei's words. The jealousy that she felt as a foal and even a little these days were perfectly normal ... but now even as she was pregnant with her own children...
Letting the train of thought slip for a while Lyrical silently nibbled on the closest shoots of grass near her mouth. Perhaps she could be content with what she had. At that moment one of her children shifted position inside and Lyrical gazed at the roundness of her belly with a new found sense of pride.
"Thank you Hakumei for your insight. I see the wisdom in your words and I have to agree with you. If I had been anything else I may not be in this unique position to welcome my children into the world. I have been lucky enough to find a caring mate and now even perhaps as I say this ... I have begun to let go of the feelings of ill will towards those of my family. For that I thank you immensely."
