Trine was a beautiful tropical place. Lush forests, clean beaches, clear waters. Who wouldn't be happy to be here? But with the onset of Benden riders and healers, many folk of the Weyr were feeling annoyed and under pressure. To make matters worse, the weather had been hot and muggy, adding to the irritation of dragons and especially the clutching mothers. Touching had occurred, so far as V'tur knew, and things had gone well. That meant that the eggs would be hatching within a handful of days. Personally, he was troubled on many levels and had finally requested a leave day to sort out his thoughts. With Iweith snoozing back at their weyr, V'tur had made his way to northern most lake so that the brooding look on his face would not scare away any of the workers or candidates. Overhead, the clouds rolled in and thunder began to crackle across the skies.
It would rain soon.
And that suited him just fine. Every year around this time, V'tur became like a woman during her monthly time. Even his beloved hid from his sight when he hit rock bottom. A wineskin lay beside V'tur as he sat on the beach, legs out, head back and eyes closed. He was deep enough within his thoughts that he wouldn't have heard a dragon snoring right next to him.

Kytara was hiding. Again. Well, not again. She always was. When she wasn't busy with chores, lessons or continuing her studies, she was off in some remote and abandoned location trying to keep out of everyone's way. She was still musing over the Touching, her journal sprawled out in her lap. She counted the pages again and pursed her lips. Paper was very hard to come by and very expensive. And she was beginning to run out. With a soft sigh she contented herself to writing smaller. The very next time she got the chance she would have to take the small stash of marks she had saved and get her some more if possible. Until then she would just have to make it last.
She jumped as thunder cracked overhead, thankful that her hand had been away from the page at the time. Her startle reaction probably would have ruined a good portion of the page. Closing the book she slipped it into the waterproofed pack she had with her and stood up to stretch the kinks out of her body. She was shocked to see someone else nearby. She bit her bottom lip and did her best to try and recall if she knew his name. Of course....he could be one of those pesky Benden healers. Most of them are busy pestering Brakiath and Alumanth though.... With yet another sigh she started back doing her best to stay invisible. Please be to busy to notice me....

Another crack of thunder and V'tur looked up. He was feeling everyone of his thirty one turns. It was starting to happen. The faces of Menoe and Valnumen were starting to fade from his memory. Even now, he couldn't remember which side of his son's body had been his birthmark. The giggles. The gentle touches. He wanted to scream. But, he was too much the rider for that. Iweith would wake and get upset.
Trine was supposed to be a new start. He was supposed to let go of the past here. So why did it hurt so much like a Thread score to his very center? V'tur wanted to pound his fists in the sand. Breathing slowly, he worked on subduing the his stormy and brooding thoughts. He still had Iweith. His better half. As long as the two of them were together, he could survive. Moving to settle into a more comfortable position, the brown rider noticed a girl packing away some sort of book into a pouch. She looked young. And nervous. Not quite one of those Benden folk but who knew with all the coming and going lately. Torn between the frustration at having his solitude interrupted and the urge to find out who she was V'tur kept his eyes on her with an intense focus.
"Hello there girl," he finally called out.

She stiffened as he called out to her. She had been so close to escaping notice too she was sure. She stood for a moment as she considered just ignoring him but decided against it. She didn't want to give anyone else a reason to hate her.
She turned towards him and did her best to smile as she walked closer. No need to have a shouted conversation. "Hello." She stopped near him, shifting her weight from side to side in a nervous habit. What does he want? Did I do something wrong? Or has he just got some chore he'd rather push off on me? She was used to picking up the slack for others. After all, it wasn't to hard to push Kytara around. She was very eager to please most anyone.

V'tur watched as she stood and stopped. A slight girl, who looked like the storm winds would blow her over. He had to admire her grit as she moved closer to him. She had the coloring of one who lived in the South, not as pale as those Benden crew. V'tur was not in his riding clothes nor did he have his rank cords on. If she was a Candidate, it would be nice to have a conversation with someone without them trying to Impress him or get on his good side.
"It's not a very good day to be outside, girl. A big storm is brewing, you are slight enough that you might get pushed around." He growled at her. V'tur stood, about a head taller than her, and frowned. "Shouldn't you be in lessons or something like that?"

Kytara was almost sure he wasn't from Benden now. That group wouldn't have cared a spit about her welfare. They would be to busy bombarding her with questions about everything under the sun. She glanced up at the sky as if checking the validity of what he said. The storm did indeed look like it would be strong, but she wasn't to concerned, she was stronger than she looked. At least physically. She shook her head in answer to his question. She had finished with lessons for the day and had rushed to finish with her chores. She had wanted this time alone, but she also knew that in such busy times it was near impossible. "I've got free time. At least until later." She decided that would suffice for an answer.
He was tall, by her standards, and held himself in a very imposing way. It was fairly obvious that she had disrupted him from whatever he had been doing. He didn't seem to be too pleased about it either. She began to shift her weight from side to side as she chewed on her bottom lip. She was becoming more than uncomfortable under his gaze. I didn't mean to annoy him. But he called out to me. Should I....just hurry to leave? She waited, not wanting to rush away and be rude.

A flash of lightning across the southernmost lake and a crack of thunder shook them both. Iweith would not be happy if he got himself shocked to death. The girl seemed to be shaking in front of him. Was he really that imposing? V'tur didn't like to think that he was unapproachable. "With the way the sky is turning, they may cancel your afternoon lessons yet. Seeing how quickly the weather has changed on us, may I offer you a ride?"
Iweith? I am about to get soaked.
The brown woke from his slumber in his weyr and it took a moment for him to register what V'tur had said. Iweith mumbled something that his rider could not hear and stretched out like a feline. Must I come gather you?
"Don't look so nervous girl. I am not one of those Benden folk to pick at you nor am I one to chew you out on your own free time." V'tur tried to keep the annoyance out of his voice.

She jumped as yet another peal of thunder split the sky. Perhaps he was right, maybe it was time she started to head back. She was halfway ready to turn and leave when he offered her a ride. At the sheer idea her eyes lit up, as would most any other candidate. Still, she had seen quite a few riders driven into a flustered rage by an over eager candidate, so she wisely kept her moth shut beyond a simple answer. "I'd enjoy that. Thank you."
She didn't realize that her discomfort had been so obvious. Apologetically she ducked her head, and did her best to relax a bit. She focused on the ride, no matter how short. It wouldn't be her first, but like most others she enjoyed the feeling no matter how often she experienced it. Feeling that she owed him something more beyond just a thank you she offered him the only thing she could think off. "Thank you again...um...I apologize, I don't think I know your name. I am Kytara, an apprentice harper now candidate."

Iweith came skimming in across the lake and landed as lightly as a brown could. While he didn't have the bulk of a brown, he had the length and the leg. Much like a runnerbeast built for speed not distance. He crooned at his rider and bent down. Come. The sky is on fire.
"Come on," And before she could say anything, V'tur hoisted her up and onto Iweith. The dragon had no saddle or leathers on so the ride was not going to be as pleasant as it could be. She was not bulky, this girl, more like she needed meat on her bones. "Sorry to grab you up but I don't think either of us wants to be struck down. I am V'tur. My pleasure, Kytara."
The dragon crouched and then leapt into the air. One, two good pumps of the wings and into the sky they went. Then between felt even more chilling to rider and beast as they escaped an angry sky. Suddenly, all three were coming in to the side of the kitchens area. Landing, Iweith looked back. You okay?
"I am okay, are you okay? When I say go, just slide down and make a dash for the kitchens. Then I will get us some hot klah and hopefully pastries."

She watched in awe as Iweith landed. Lovely. While she was fond of greens herself, most likely a side-effect of being so close with Minth and Cayxia, she had to admit that the brown was stunning. She was still lost in thought as the man lifted her onto Iweith. She bit her lip and hung her head in shame for simply standing there with her mouth open. When he apologized she simply shook her head. "It's alright."
Feeling the lurch of the brown beneath her she tossed her arms around V'tur's waist in sheer reaction. She felt her stomach make the leap to her throat and swallowed hard as they entered between. She squeezed her eyes shut and counted in her own mind, a trick that Cayxia had taught her in order to settle her nerves in the cold nothingness. One.......two......three.
With that they were out and landing near the kitchens. The world felt muffled for a moment before noise burst back into her reality. She nodded at him wordlessly and waited for his signal.

After the crack of lightening and burst of thunder, V'tur pushed the girl towards the kitchens. And was right behind her. "Go, Kytara! You there! A pitcher of the hottest klah, two bowls of whatever is cooking and bread. Now!"
The nearest drudge jumped to answer the brownrider's commands even as Iweith jumped and went between to get to their weyr all the much faster. A nastier storm had not been seen in a while.
V'tur cursed at the fact that he had nothing to cover Kytara with to help ease the chill. But someone must have been using their brains as the dining area was roasting from the kitchen fires. "Are you alright?"
