It had been many nights since the long separated pair reunited in a random, most fortunate meeting. It had been a strike of good fortune, one neither Jukka or Eileen had been expecting. It was turning both the once plagued wolves' lives around. They continued to wander south and east, not searching for anything in particular. Merely a bite to eat or a place to rest, that was mostly all they were looking for.
Illness was long gone from both of them, the scent no loner clung to their pelts. It hadn't in ages. Yet both still wore scars in their minds from their past traumas. Losing one's pack to plague might do such a thing and neither wolf had any contact with the outside until both were sure they carried no dangers to other.
Now was a time for rebuilding and looking to the future and finding a place to settle down. They hadn't spoken much since reuniting, neither sure of their place in rank with each other. Jukka had once been a Beta in their pack, Eileen's father's right paw, but now there were none for him to lead and, while he had always taken orders well and followed them to the exact word, he had never been a leader in particular. He was just exceptionally well at following orders and making sure those beneath him did the same.
Eileen, on the other hand, was younger than him by a good two years. Yet she had the makings of a leader, that much the former Beta could tell. He saw a strong mixture of her mother and her father in her slender, yet sharp frame. She resembled them greatly in body and in spirit. She began bossing the moment they met and hadn't relented, not that he minded too terribly much. The company was good and he had decided from the moment they saw each other that he would defend her unfailingly, to make up for leaving the disease-ridden pack to save his own hide, instead of tending to the ill.
Regardless, the two were eager for what life held before them and, though they didn't know their exact locations, both could smell salt on the air, which was saltier than either had ever smelled before.
"I think we're getting close to the big water!"
"Yes, it seems it! Lets hurry, I wanna get there before the sun goes down!"
"Wanna race?" The male's tail wagged like a banner behind him and he showed a youthful exuberance that he hadn't in many a moon.
"Wait." The younger wolf turned her nose to the wind, her grin fading as she tested their surroundings. "I think I smell something.. Maybe we're near a pack's territory... We should tread carefully."

Samhain felt it might be best if he were the one to scout the packlands for a few days. His beta was missing, and up to no good. Something bad was brewing, and if young Pol was to find himself alone with Varok, Sam was sure that Pol would not come back to him alive. He loved the teen as his own brother, and had seen Pol and his sister raised from pups.
He had ordered Pol and Sol to keep themselves inside the dens, and warn Freed and anyone else if they saw Varok sneaking about. This would have to be fixed soon, but the daily patrol had to be done now.
Finally coming around to the forest side of the borders, Sam smelled the unmistakable smell of outsiders. He was cautious, but eager. It was always possible that travelers were just looking for a place to call home.
He gave a short howl, both a warning that he was there, and a peace offering, that he would like to speak with them, and would not harm them. He almost laughed at himself when he thought about it, he wasn't so large to take on two wolves at once anyway.

The pair stiffened at the same time, the strange howl catching their attentions instantly. Jukka's hackles lifted, despite the hint of peace within the melodious ring of a wolf's howl, merely out of instinct. Hopefully the ring was true and they would have little to worry about. The same thoughts drifted through Eileen's mind, but a ghost of a smile played across her momentarily concerned maw. She was confident that she and her old packmate could easily handle themselves, especially if the one calling to them was on his own.
"Come on, then. No use standing here like a couple of gawking gulls. He's not going to answer himself." She motioned towards the voice with a simple nod of her head and began to walk in that direction without waiting for a response from her companion.
He grunted slightly and nodded, though her back was already to him. Her mind was set and they were on the borders of a pack, so there was little use in protesting.
"Very well..."
It didn't take very long for the pair to find the alpha of these lands. They weren't that far off to begin with and both moved at a quick, steady, even pace. He was a firm, proud creature. Both instantly recognized him as must being the alpha of the territory and, although it being ages since either had a serious run in with a stranger, acted accordingly as best as they could allow themselves.
Eileen cleared her throat, yet did not speak as of yet, waiting on being addressed. She held herself in a stern, ready manner and her eyes rested politely on his cheek. Despite him being alone, she was not about to act disrespectful.

The alpha didn't have to wait long before the wandering pair was in sight. They seemed respectful enough, and he was eager to get to know them. If he found them to be of a friendly nature, he wouldn't hesitate to offer them safe haven for the night, or even a home, if they seemed to need it.
"I am Samhain, this is the Hollow Earth pack." he introduced himself and the area, somewhat awkwardly. He had just grown to full size and hadn't been an alpha very long, but he was doing his best with the resources he had. "Who would you two be?" he smiled amicably, a welcoming gesture.
The male was odd to him. He had never seen such a color on a wolf, and the closest he could recall had been his parents' alpha in his birth pack. He enjoyed the change of pace from the muted colors he lived with lately.
That wasn't to say the female wasn't anything special. She had her own interesting pattern about her, and he marveled at the deep red around her eyes.
Interesting indeed.

Eileen parted her maw, as if to speak, but hesitated and changed her mind. She was still young, still wet behind the ears, but Jukka was older and handled many more dealings with others than she. Thus she made the decision to stand down and let him take control the situation. As if reading her mind, the former beta stood proudly, though he was careful to show respect where it was due. The brown, brightly marked male rested his eyes to the right of Samhain's face and was sure to hold himself slightly lower.
"A pleasure, Samhain. I am Jukka and this is-"
"I'm Eileen!"
"Yes, this is Eileen. We are what remains of the Swift River pack, which was further north." He, for a moment, found that he was slightly unsure of himself. He knew that he and Eileen were clean of any illness and that had been nearly two years ago. But what if this alpha did not see it that way? They no longer carried the scent of sickness on their pelts, that had faded long ago, but there was still a fear in his heart, and perhaps rightfully so. Still, there was little use in lying. Not only was it unbecoming, but it was something that could come back and bite hard if the truth was discovered.
"We are seeking a pack to run with, after a good several seasons wandering on our own."
