 Being a diplomat was very hard work, but Balios was up to the task.
The pup's work ethic was admirable. Where he had gotten some of his ideas was a little mysterious, as he had lived the sheltered life of a puppy up til now, and had never met anyone but his own odd little family. Despite his youth and inexperience, the dappled pup was graced with a certain air of dignity and pompousness, a sense of self-importance.
Also, he was pretty sure his sworn duty was to make wolves everywhere unite and become harmonious, spreading the message of equality and fairness to all.
And so he was extremely excited for today, because it was the first day he was allowed to leave the safe confines around his parent's den, and head out into the big world, where -- he had heard -- there were other pups. Girl pups, specifically. Balios had never met a girl aside from his mother, and he was exceedingly curious to see what they were like.

 Mavican was up for a bit of exploring today. Mother was currently taking her afternoon nap with left the pups free to do as they wished. So she decided to set off and see where her paws would take her. But Mavican knew that she would need to remember how to find her way back home, which would be a challenge given her horrible memory. Standing at the edge of the den entrance Mavican's eyes surveyed the surrounding area.
Tail wagged as she looked at all the possibilities to explore. Well best to start somewhere, so she picked a direction and started walking, a bit slowly though, given that she decided to count her steps out so she could find her way back. "One...two..three...four..."

Balios's nose caught a whiff of an unfamiliar scent, and his eyes lit up enthusiastically. Tail wagging, he bounded forward on heavy paws, his eyes bright in the black face mask that crossed his brows.
Aha! There it was! The source of that smell. He slowed down, creeping up on the stranger, looking her over thoughtfully. This other pup was extremely bright, brighter than any wolf he had ever seen, and that intrigued him. Temporarily forgetting his usually immaculate manners, he bounded into the female's path and openly stared.

With her head tilted down, carefully staring at her paws Mavican continued forward. "Twenty one...twenty-two...twen - " Counting was suddenly interrupted as she walked into something. Looking up, Mavican's eyes settled on a spotted pup, though his colors were dull compared to her own. Her tail started wagging fiercely now, making her entire back end wiggle about. "Hi!" She barked happily at him. "I'm Mavican! Who are you?"

Remembering his manners, he drew himself into a regal-looking stance -- at least he hoped it was -- and surveyed her. "My name is Balios. It is a pleasure to meet you, Mavican." And then, in a much-less-dignified voice, because the curiosity was bubbling up in his thoughts, "...You're a girl, right?"

"Balios...that's a funny name." She said with a giggle, though really couldn't figure out why it was funny. His question made her head tilt to the side. "Of course I'm a girl." Bouncing around the other pup she looked in over, and then dropped down in front of him in that classic play stance. "Wanna play?" She asked, now having totally forgotten about where she was going or that she had been counting her steps to get all the way out here.

"I thought so!" He said, triumphantly, his tail giving a wag. He peered at her curiously, but as she dropped into a play bow, he did the same almost reflexively. He was, first and foremost, a puppy -- and a diplomat second.
And puppies played!
"Okay!" He said, tongue lolling from his slack jaws in excitement, tail waving behind him. He jumped forward, touched his nose to her shoulder, and cried, "TAG! You're it!" And bolted away.

Barking happily as he tagged her, Mavican raced after her. "I'm gonna get you!" She called out as she run. Boy was he fast! It would take a lot of effort to catch him. Her paws carried her quickly, and she kept her eyes on his back. "Hey, why you gotta run so fast?" Maybe she could trick him into slowing down so she could more easily catch him. It was worth a shot anyways. Laughing she continued forward, following his trail perfectly, if not a ways back from him.

"Cuz my paws are so big!" he called back over his shoulder. He wasn't lying on that front; his paws were rather large, hinting that he would grow to be a rather large wolf. He didn't slack in his speed any, but began dodging and weaving, running in zig-zags, all dignity totally forgotten.
This was fun! So far he couldn't really tell much difference between her and any of his brothers, except she wasn't cranky. But that was probably due less to gender than to upbringing. Still, time would tell. There had to be something different about girls, or else Mother wouldn't be so twitchy about them.

Slowly Mavican was catching up to him, though it was a bit distracting when he would zig this way and then that way. Couldn't he run in a straight line? That would be much easier to follow and - hey look a butterfly! Mavican skidded to a halt, and watched the bright blue insect bob here and there in the air. "Pretty." She said softly as her eyes followed it. Then she began to chase after it, jumping in the air, batting at it with her paws. It wasn't that she wanted to hurt it, no, she just wanted to catch it and get a better look at it.

He was running for a few minutes longer before he realized he was no longer chased. Puzzled, he stopped, looked over his shoulder, and blinked. "Er...What's the matter?" he asked, not seeing the butterfly -- only the purple pup looking very silly indeed. "You don't want to play tag anymore?"
Then, realizing that perhaps he was running too fast for a girl, added, "I can go slower. I can be it, if you'd like?"

Mavican crouched down, tail waving slowly as she watched the butterfly intently. She was going to catch it this time for sure. Finally the butterfly began to drift down towards her and she lept as high as she could reaching out with her front paws to grab it. But then a voice called out to her and she turned her head to see just who it was. This caused the butterfly a moment to escape by flying higher and Mavican came crashing to the ground. She let out an 'oof' sound and slowly got to her paws, giving her fur a shake. Then she finally spotted the other puppy.
Woah! Where did he come from? Her head tilted at the mention of tag. Oh she loved to play tag! A smile broke out across her maw and she barked at him playfully, tail returning to it's normal rapid wagging speed. "Oh oh oh! I'll play tag!" And she started to bounce towards him happily. "Pick me, I wanna play!" And then her smile faded for a moment. "Who are you?"

"Um." He blinked, coming to a stop ahead of her, looking around to make sure nobody else was around. "My name is Balios," he said, uncertainly. "And you're Mavican. And we were playing a minute ago."

"Oh. Did we?" Her head tipped to the side and let out a slightly nervous laugh. She really needed to work at remembering things better. "Mama says I suffer from short term memory loss. At least I think that's what she says....I don't remember." And with that Mavican suddenly perked up again, eager and ready to play. With her tail wagging once more she smiled at Balios. "So....um....Balios. Wanna play?" Hopefully this time she would remember that she was playing with him and not get distracted by something.

"Um, sure," he said, brows furrowed curiously, an expression accented by his markings. Short-term memory problem? Weird! "Wanna play some more tag? I think you were about to catch me, so we can say you DID catch me, and I can chase you. Or we can play Hide and seek!" He thought about this for a second. "...Or maybe not, because you might forget to look for me."
