He was supposed to be in the den. He was supposed to be napping with the rest of his siblings while the nanny watched because Azar and Khin were both out. However Kakek Api had other idea of what to do with this afternoon. He didn't want to nap, he could sleep all he wanted to later in the night. No right now he wanted to be out exploring the sands. His mother had taken him out a few times before this, so had his father, sure they were with him but that wasn't what mattered.
He laughed slightly as he trotted away from the den looking around as he did. There had to be something around some kind of trouble that he could get into. For now he wasn't that sure what it was but he was going to find something to do it it took him all day. Even wandering around all day was better then nothing that was for sure. He grinned ear to ear as he continued his trot.
Something caught the corner of his eye. There was a large lion, he was red, and he looked some what familiar, laying out in the sand. He wiggled his rump before he started to trot toward it. He must have seen the male before, from some where, probably when he was younger but he wasn't really that sure. He laughed as he crept up from behind the laying male and then ducked his body to the ground His belly was touching the ground and he was rady to pounce. He could see his target, he was going to go for the mane. Sure it wasn't mart to anger a firekin. He knew that himself, he was a firekin!
But this moment was just to good to pass up! And if the male was oging to try to hurt him he could get his mother or father! Or get his grandfather that his mother named him after. He must have been really strong.
He sprung himself into the air, burrowing his head into the males mane before tugging on it with a grin on his face.

An ear twitched the moment that the cub sprang and, the next moment a pair of large, olive-coloured eyes had turned downwards to regard the youngster tugging at his mane.
"What do we have here, then?" He asked, his voice deep but kindly. He blinked, his eyes fixing on the little one's bright yellow ones and then on the small mark on the boy's throat. That was...interesting...
It was odd, but that mark had never been a favourite of his lineage. It reminded him too much of his sister, Koka. She had worn that mark, too and it had passed down to many of his children, too. Apparently it was a strong print, for here it was on the very pelt of one of his grandchildren. He'd seen the little one before now, of course, but they had been so small that their marks had not been clear. It surprised him how much the little ones were growing up, even now at only a few weeks old!
He tried to remember the little one's name, wishing that Azar had not had such a big litter.
"Kakek Api, is it?" He queried, unsure whether he'd gotten the name right or not. He smiled. "Should you be so far away from your mother, little Firekin?"

It took Kakek a little bit before he processed the voice that was speaking to him. He knew he had heard it before but he could put his paw on it. The young cub paused chewing on the male's mane thinking as he looked at the older male. One of his brothers looked like the male. A grin grew on his face as he realized who it was. "Your grandson." He chirped with a goofy grin across his face. He relax for a moment thens started to chew on the male's mane again. His grandpa had a fun mane!
The cub paused and then laughed slightly. "Of course thats my name grandpa. He took a moment to look his grandfather in the eye. He could see the strong firekin in him just by looking at him! He knew there was a reason he was named after him! He was going to be just as strong as him. He could take on anyone who got in his way! He knew he could! He growled playfully as he tugged at his mane.
But the sound of his grandfather's voice again startled him. He lost his footing and plopped right in between the larger male's legs. He sat back on his rump in a goofy way as he looked up at the male. Oh no, not that question. He hated how he always got that question. "Umm... Yeah!" He puffed out his chest as he looked up at his grandfather. "My mom said I'm a strong firekin and I can take on anything I want!" That was a good excuse. Even thought that didn't mean he could leave the den without her knowing. But his grandfather didn't know that... Did he?

Kidondo chuckled, finding the young one truly endearing. "Well, you're mother is certainly right about that, little one! I can already tell by looking at you. You're going to grow to be a fine adult someday! Big and strong as any that came before you." He reached out a paw and ruffled Kakek's little 'mane'.
"But, since there's no lions to fight with at the moment, how about we go for a walk, instead? Strength in numbers, after all! I could do with some company whilst I go out on my morning patrol in any case. Hm? What do you say?"
He stretched, shaking his head in an attempt to shake the bangs of his mane out of his eyes.

Kakek grinned even wider then he had probably ever grinned before. His grandfather seemed pretty proud of him, he seemed like he liked him and that excited him. He wanted his family proud of him and because of that he was very happy. He wiggled some before laughing quietly. "I'm hoping I can be all of that." He giggled before standing up as straight as possibly possible, trying to make himself seem taller and bigger.
But something made him drop this stance, that thing would be excitement. He was extremely excited to be able to go with his grandfather to do important pride things. He giggled some more before nodding and getting closer to his grandpa. "I'd love to! I'm good at patrolling! I promise!" He giggled again before he looked up at his grandfather. "Lead the way?"

"Okay, let's go!" Kidondo moved at an easy pace across the sand, his tail swishing behind him as he went. He was a strong, large adult Firekin with the typical bright red pelt of royalty marked with distinct, black and white markings that was typical of their kind. And yet, he was different from those who had ruled before.
Very different.
"Have you been told much of the different roles available to you in the pride, Kakek?"

Kakek paused and thought for a moment licking his lips for a moment. He was thinking carefully as he looked up at the male. He flicked his hair out of his eyes before nodding excitedly he was very excited to be wandering to do something exciting, he loved these kind of things.
He then nudged the large male's foot and then grinned. "Yes! Mama has tod me about a lot of them!" Kakek looked up at the male admiringly. He was very proud to know the male was his grandfather. He with he had a coat like his grandfather was, or at least completely darker like his mother was but that wasn't completely the case.

"That's good. I'm glad you know all of your options." Kidondo continued. "Sometimes, though, it can be difficult to see one's path and future but in the end, we all discover our talents and put them to use." He glanced across at his grandson with his desert eyes.
"And so, little Kakek, is there any role that takes your interest? Something you would like to strive to become? You have family members settled in an array of different roles, from healer to esteemed warrior! Just know this, if you wish to become a warrior, then that is wonderful, but do not feel pressured into it because of the Firekin blood. Even an historian or a cub-sitter has their place here and provide a necessary role that the pride needs to function. There is no shame in choosing a more peaceful path."

Kakek paused once again as he thought it out trying to figure out what he wanted to say to the older male. "Whatta mean grandpa?" He questioned curiously not really that sure of what he meant by that. He thought about it for a few seconds but he just couldn't figure it out. He got the general idea but he didn't get where he was going with it. He didn't like understanding something that his grandfather said he felt like he should be able to understand all of it since he looked up to him so much.
He thought for a moment thinking it through before speaking "Well... Mama and papa are soldiers, and I know mama always has a goal to be more, I'm proud of of mama because of that." He grinned ear to ear before speaking again. "But I must admit I don't like it as much as they do..." He paused again before looking up at him and grinning once again. "I like the idea of being a guard. I feel like it is a great idea. In my mind anyway. I feel like it is something that I can be proud of." He spoke simply, he was very proud to be a firekin and that was something that he would enjoy.

"There was a cub I knew - an adult now - who wanted desperately to be a soldier. He came to me specifically and tried to show off his skills. But, when I saw him, I realised that he was not an attacker. He was a defender. He wanted to become a warrior so that he could be a hero. So others could look up to him. Yet, his skills were not placed for it. So, deciding to go with my mind and not my heart, I put him down for guard training. He detested it and hated it and yet, as he grew, he came to realise that, in fact, the guard's life was for him. It took him a while but eventually his bitterness faded and he found himself rising to become one of the best guards the pride had known. And still is to this day."
Kidondo smiled, recalling that cub - now a full adult with a family of his own and a son proud to follow in his footsteps.
"A guard is very important, Kakek, and they do learn fighting skills, too. Yet, they put their abilities towards protection. There is no greater duty than that in a pride. They see the danger first. Warn others. Protect those too young or weak to protect themselves. I know a few good guards who may wish to take you under their wing as an apprentice, once you come of age, if you like?"

Kakek paused and then looked at his grandfather with wide eyes and a curious look in them. He was so excited to hear that for some reason. "Really?" His grandfather talked so highly because of this male and that made him extremely excited he wasn't even too sure why but he really was. He was proud to hear this about the male, and it was a male too!" He grinned ear to ear thinking about it before looking at his grandfather with wide eyes. "That is so amazing Grandpa!"
He wiggled before puffing out his chest at the idea. "I really want to be a guard, I want to be one of the best guards there is!" He then paused before looking up at his grandfather even more excited then he just was. "Oh! Grandpa that would mean a LOT!" He then paused once more before looking up at his grandfather and thinking as he did and then smiled even more once again. "Can you put me with the best? I wanna be the best!" He laughed a littled more before nudging his grandfather. "Oh it would mean so much grandpa!"

Kidondo nodded, pausing to ruffle his grandson's little 'mane', smiling fondly. "Sometimes we just need a little nudge in the right direction to be set on the right path. That is what family is for. That is what a pride is for. That is why we thrive."
He nodded then, serious in his offer to the youngster. "I will do that for you, young Kakek Api! We may even come by some on patrol. We'll be crossing a few of their lines in a moment. The lions I have in mind can be...difficult to work with and understand. Yet, they are very skilled. Very skilled indeed. Let's see if we can find one of them, yes? And, if your mother wonders where you've been and tries to tell you off, we'll just tell her we were doing important future things, okay?"
He laughed and quickened his pace a little. "A little faster?" He called, glancing at the cub to ensure he didn't fall too far behind.

Kakek giggled as his grandfather ruffled his mane, he would normally get all into a grumble if anyone else did that. But he was okay if his grandfather did that. "You know grandpa, I'm named after you!" He grinned proudly then puffed out his chest he was so proud of this fact. "My name means Grandfather's fire." He said it very seriously wanting to make it clear that it meant a lot to him and it really did, it made him one of the most proud creatures in the entire pride! "I think it's really cool." He then giggled once again.
"Yay!" He then looked around trying to see if there were anyone around but he then looked up again hoping that it was true they were going to be able to see others in the pride. "That would be awesome grandpa!" He then giggled some. "Okay! I don't think mama will mind too much anyway.." He paused as he thought about it then giggled a little more once again.
"Oh course!" He started trotting his little legs more, he knew he had to keep up he would have to go fast for a lot of his life.He might as well get used to it.

Kidondo felt his heart swell with pride to hear that, allowing a rumbling purr to emanate deep within his chest. "And I could not be more proud of you, Kakek Api. You are a good Firekin and I am eager to see what you will grow to become. Very eager indeed." Kidondo adored his family and his pride and nothing made him happier than to see the individuals he cared for blossoming within this land.
"Now, if my calculations are correct...ah, yes, there he is. See that fine fellow up there? Young male, only recently grown into his mane, but fresh and eager as any. Apprenticed to his own father, one of the best guards around." Kidondo did a lot of patrolling and, as such, had grown to know who would be where at a particular time, unless Uuo - Captain of the Guard - had decided to do a shift change.
"Empty horizons today, Heti?"

The young male lion snapped to attention at the sudden call of the Regent, drawing himself up proudly and made a mental note to try and be on his best behaviour.
"Kidondo, Regent, Sir! Empty as empty can be. Nothing to report." His eyes lowered to glance at the cub with the Regent and he gave a crooked smile. "What's this? A new guard on duty today? A little small, isn't he, Sir?"

Kakek nodded at his grandfather. He could see it in his face, he was happy with that. He was going to make his grandfather proud if it was the last thing he did! He giggled once again and moved toward his grandfather and nuzzled against his paw.
He looked around a few times before spotting the male that his grandfather was talking about. He could see the red on the male's body he was a firekin for sure and the blacks on the male made him feel kind of at home. And his grandfather spoke highly of him. The male was younger from what he heard though, that was a little disappointing however he knew that it would be okay. He knew and he trusted his grandfather.
He looked over the male a few times before his attention snapped to the male and puffed out his chest standing up as straight as he could "Nuh-uh!" He squeaked some before shaking his head stubbornly at the male. "I'm big!" He nodded once again, well at least he knew that he was big for a cub. Yeah that was a good thing for him.
