Ok, since a few good people have refused to post pictures of their altars, I am changing the idea of this thread. Instead, discuss what you like to include in your altar, and ideas that you'd love to do if you could. (obviously only if you want to)

I would not feel comfortable sharing visual imagery of that with complete strangers over the web. People don't even SEE my area preferably until I've gotten a long good look at them.

I don't mind discussing aspects of it but I don't upload pictures.

I would tell you how its set up and what it looks like, but its something too personal to upload a picture of so strangers can look at it. Its kind of my personal spot of worship of the Goddess. Where I go for peace and quiet and reflection.

That's fine, I completely understand. smile
I personally do not have a problem with showing my basic setup, though the pictures I would take would only consist of my most basic of setup. This could be due to the fact that I have never been in a living situation where I could hide it though. I don't mind people seeing it/looking at it, I just tell them no touching allowed.
Me and my fiancée are saving to buy a home and I hope that we can find a 3 bedroom for a good price. That way I can have the smallest one set aside JUST for my sacred space. I'm going to school for interior design, and I have so many ideas for the room. I love the idea of a mural on each wall representing a different element/direction.

I think a mural is a lovely idea. In my bedroom I have a personal altar and then an Egyptian shrine. The shrine is just to honor the deities and then I use my altar for other work. On my bedroom ceiling I am painting the sky and then on the wall behind my shrine I have pictures of Egypt and Egyptian art.

A symbolistic ashtray. No, I'm not joking. If you like to smoke during a ritual sometimes, and have a ritual smoke. It's nice to have an ashtray special to you. Or, even if it's a special incense holder that is made to catch ash.
I've brought cigars into my personal circles before.

I have 4 Egyptian pictures, one bronze wall hanging, two clay casts made from casts of actual artifacts and a decorated bronze plate with a picture of Nefertiti carved into it. Then there are my statues of Isis and Bast (Bast was a gift, otherwise I probably never would have bought it). I also have a tall candle holder that has carvings of Isis all around it. I have a large green marble carved scarab too that was a gift, and a little vase with a lot of different pictures on it. Then I have a few little pyramids scattered about. My ritual dagger is Egyptian as well. This is it, though mine did not come with the smaller one, nor does it have the pouch area for it. It's jsut the large one. Never really realized how much Egyptian stuff I had >.> I love the idea of painting the ceiling as the sky. A neat idea would be to find a clear paint that glows in the dark, I think I've seen some before, it just dries clear. That way you could paint stars over the sky, without it messing up your work, but when you turn out the lights, it gives the effect of it being night. If you have a sun in your picture you could even go so far as to do the moon over it with the glow in the dark paint. You just need to be careful with what kind you get, or it'll glow green and not white.

I don't have an altar, but don't have the room to invest, and I don't think I'd share over the internet what mine would look like either, which is why I didn't reply in the first place.

Mine is a split altar (meaning one side for the Goddess and one side for the God) On the Goddess Side: Bast statue Goddess Figurine Emerald offering Moon trinket Clear Quartz crystal (For sending out positive energy)
On the God side: Leopard Trinket Sun trinket Emerald offering Smoky Quartz crystal (For absorbing negative energy)
Then I have crystals scattered about, in the middle a "color changing" stone in the shape of an egg, my tools, jewelry, etc
For the element representations I have: Earth- A box of salt Air- my wand Fire- A candle Water- a sand dollar my best friend gave me.
I am planning on redoing my altar sometime soon to make it less cluttered.

So...why are you replying now? Not to sound rude. Also, I did change the topic discussion. You don't have to have an altar to take part in it. Any ideas you have, that you're willing to share, for altars or sacred space can be discussed. Even ones you wouldn't personally use, but maybe others might like.
My altar space now is very small, and I've had to remove some items to make sure the essentials fit. I have a rabbit fur that my pentacle usually sits on, but it's quite a bit too large to use right now. One of my favorite items is my water symbol. I have a small clay pitcher. It's blue and has swirls and waves carved into it. It's very simple, but nice and I found it at a goodwill and just HAD to have it.
If you have the skill, and patience, I have seen where people make quilts to hang on the wall behind their altars. One girl was very good at it and made a huge mural out of it with her God on the left facing inwards and her Goddess on the right facing inwards. Between them was the Tree of Life, branch up and taking up the entire top of the quilt. There were a lot of symbols designed into Celtic knot work. It was very beautiful.

Most of us don't want to share what is on our personal altars so it's fine. But what about other ideas you have or decorations around your house? I personally love having decorations around the house that express my spirituality.

From my personal experience in creating an altar. It doesn't necessarily have to be set up a specific way. One thing that always seems to repeat itself is to use objects that are personal to you.
It also helps if the object given to you, if given, was gave away by someone personal to you

I've read a lot of books and talked to a lot of people who say "it has to be set up just so, or it won't work." or "It HAS to be made of this material" etc etc. I understand that in some situations certain materials should be used, or not used, but in general, it should be what feels right for YOU. I remember when I first started setting up an altar, I showed a long-time Wiccan friend of mine a picture, and she about bit my head off. See, I place my Goddess statue to the left and the God statue to the Right (while facing the altar). I guess she thought it was supposed to be other way around, and was very adamant about it, saying it would offend the Gods and blah blah blah. Obviously I've never had a problem. I have personal reasons for setting it up that way and I think that's the best way to go.

Or, EVERYTHING HAS TO BE ACCORDING TO THIS LEVEL OF PERFECTION ON EVERYTHING OR THE SIMPLEST SPELL WON'T WORK! I've irked quite a few detail nazi's online before concerning magic. Simply because. I'm not going to change how I do things. Just because some stranger on the internet thinks every little minor detail should be adhered to. It's just not how I practice.
