Utsu's Prompt

Everything "" is pokemon-speech. ^^))

"Heeeeey! Item delivery!"
The doors to the PokeCenter opened with a faint swish as a girl ran in, nearly tripping over her own feet in her haste to enter. Tucked beneath one arm was a cardboard box, sealed with waterproof tape. From the faint swishing coming from within the box, one can assume that it was a delivery of potions... Or some other type of liquid medicine. The girl practically skipped to the counter before gently placing the box upon it, grinning.

At a first glance, one can assume that the girl was a trainer of water pokemon -- she had sapphire blue hair and matching dark blue eyes. Even her outfit screamed water trainer -- she wore jean shorts and a dark blue, nearly black T-shirt covered by a worn, leather vest that looked like it belonged on a fisher. Her head was covered by a purple-blue hat, complete with the local item store's logo printed in bold letters atop of it.

A few words with the Nurse Joy at the desk left her waiting as the Nurse went to locate her pay. Marushii took this time to look around, curious as to how many trainers with what were waiting today, and (to her disappointment) it seemed like an easy day with no injuries. And yet... She tilted her head to one side and eyed the Dodrio in the corner, trying to match all three of its gazes at the same time.

"Er, Nurse Joy? What's up with that Dodrio over there?" She asked when the nurse returned, not breaking her thrice-split gaze with him. After she had been filled in on his tale, she carefully approached him, grinning. "Hi there!"

""
""
""

"Er... am I interrupting you?"

""
""
""

Marushii paused as she stood in front of Utsu, oblivious to his words -- after all, she didn't exactly speak Dodrio. "So... uh, how've you been?"

""
""
""
""
""
""

"Excuse me, miss? I believe there's a potion missing..." Nurse Joy interrupted, waving Marushii away from the Dodrio and back to her.

"Ack! You're right! I'm sorry -- I'll go get it! I'll be back!" Marushii turned and ran out the door, sparing both the Nurse at the counter and the Dodrio in the corner a quick wave before she disappeared.

Entry One - The Beginning

All stories begin with something. Some are lucky and are interesting and others make your eyes jump from word to word in hopes of landing on something interesting. Let's see how well I do in writing this, shall we?

My name is Marushii -- Marushii Tel'varris. I think one of my parents loved the "Marill" pokemon a bit too much when I was bored. If you say "Maru" too fast, it sounds like a Marill that just learned how to go "Ooo!" at something. Luckily for me, I happen to be part sylph and undine! Or, at least I think so... Natural blue hair like mine doesn't get this dark unless you have the aid of Blue 37 hair dye. Aside from that, I'm human, or at least mostly human...

I'm sixteen years old and I managed to skip the hectic life of public school by being taught all those things at home. Most of the time, at least. If you've ever heard of "PurimPurim Markeet" then you'll know where to find me (I swear that name CAME with the shop when my father bought it!). It's the store my family runs, and I help out by running errands. Of course, the shop is opened most of the day, so my studying becomes interrupted a lot which eventually leads to me learning in little "snatches" before forgetting it the next day... Now that I think about it, isn't that how public school students learn, except they sleep instead of running errands?

Anyway, back to PurimPurim. It's a small, local store that has more discounts and runs more surprise sales than the Poke'Mart, but because of that we run out of stock quickly. However, it's easier to order items and supplies through PurimPurim, as we have less paperwork than the Poke'Mart on the other side of town has. It's these things that I get to deliver -- sometimes it's a breeze, sometimes it'd be easier to have the mail delivery service do it, and other times I get hopelessly lost.

Unlike my parents who live in the story above PurimPurim (accessible by a stairway behind the counter, though the stairway itself is a bit of an optical illusion. If you look at it, it looks like a solid wall until you notice how the light falls on it AND if it looks like someone's standing in midair and hasn't fallen yet.), I live... outside. Not in the sense that I'm completely under the stars - thank goodness for the roof that separates me from those! - but close to. You know how some places have those garages that look like last-minute add-ons? Since we don't have use for a car, I was lucky enough to GET the place.

It's... not that exciting. Except that it has a nice, well-oiled door that leads to a nice, clean backyard complete with a white picket fence and a small white gate that quietly swings open when you unlock it.

I promise the next entry will be more entertaining, really.

-Marushii (Maru-mar! Mar-iiilllll! Or somesuch.)

Entry Two - Pride and... a Delivery?

You know, I can't help but to feel stung. Which is odd since I haven't been insulted today. There was this Dodrio at the PokeCenter that was abandoned by his trainer, and apparently they (as in, the PokeCenter) were looking for someone to take care of him.

Since I don't own any pokemon, the only time I even go in there is when I'm making a delivery, which is what I was doing (surprise, surprise) when I met the pokemon. I know, it doesn't sound that interesting, but... Now, thinking back? I think that pokemon was insulting me. I'm pretty sure that's when my pride started hurting.

I think it mocked me when I had to run back to PurimPurim because the order was one potion too short. When I returned with it, the Dodrio made no move towards me, though I can swear he was laughing at me as I left!

Though, to be ho -- delivery! Hang on...

How... odd. It seems that I've gotten a pokeball, along with some Trainer registration papers, as well as a... Battered, old, off-white pokedex that's seen better days. From the looks of it, it looks like it's one of the ones that were made with a monotone color and no sound... I need to do something about that color.

.
.
.

Whew! Papers are filled out, and dropped into the mail! Now, all that's left is that I need to get my trainer's license and keep it with my battered 'dex, and I'm set! I wonder if there's anything inside the pokeball...?

Entry Three - It's a WHAT?!

Inside the pokeball was the Dodrio from earlier. On his pokeball was his name -- Utsu. It's japanese, and its meaning has something to do with fighting...

And every time he speaks (or one of his heads speaks), I feel like my pride's been effected in some way. For the worse. And I have the vague feeling that I've been insulted... I wonder if there's a way to communicate with pokemon and understand their language without them knowing that you know? I'm really curious as to what he's saying. 'course, then again I also somewhat don't want to hear it...

...I'm starting to get somewhat sleepy, so I'll write more about the Three Headed Wonder tomorrow.

Entry Four - Amusement: More than One Use

Funny. Every time I trip while doing chores, I hear this cackling coming from at least two of his heads, followed by commentary from the third. It's a bit like one of those natural documentary channels, only Utsu is the announcer. (CROIKY! DID YEW SEE THAT MATES?! She bloomin' tripped and dropped th'packages all over! Now tha's a smart survival trick!)

However, bribery of food is slowly starting to win him over... Or at least, it seems like it. I don't dare to feed him from my hands yet -- the way he gobbles down food is enough to turn the bravest of bird-trainers away. This is probably why the bowl was invented -- to feed critters without getting your hand taken off!

Aside from that, Utus doesn't completely trust me... yet. My general klutziness seems to be keeping him amused -- he follows me around, and stops when I stop, and hasn't run off. Yet. There's always a "what if" part to worry about, though I hope Utsu'll stay with me... It'll make running packages from the stores a lot easier and quicker if I can ride him, though I'd probably be called lazy.

Entry Five - So, what's new?

Absolutely nothing! Still doing the come-here-to-me-for-food with Utsu... He's unfazed and swaggers to his poke-food now. Though, to keep him and I in shape, I snatch the bowl from under all three of his beaks when he's mostly done with it, and run. Of course, he easily overtakes me... But it's fun to try and dodge three heads! Each tries a different way, and occasionally two run into/confuse each other. It hasn't occurred to him to try and grab the bowl from me. That's right -- he tries to eat directly from it. It's fun, but I get more and more tired, and parched... Strange, isn't it?

Utsu doesn't mind -- that's when he finishes the last of the poke-kibble from the bowl. I'm not that fast, so always one of his heads can grab a bite when I'm "dodging" or attempting to. Exercises like this is fun, though occasionally there's the "accidental" trip and spill... That's the time where it's dodge-the-beak. Utsu hasn't pecked me yet, thankfully, but I better learn to call it off or else... Can you say ow?

-Marushii (really, who else do you expect? Maybe I'll stop doing this...)

Entry Six - Recreational Sports of Sorts

The outdoors are a great place to go, and that many people watch and marvel and look at through TV's and windows, but don't go themselves. It's a bit like one's own room, only much more brighter/darker/warmer/colder/wetter/drier depending on the weather. It's a bit more wild, too, with pokemon and trainers and unhappy customers storming home after an unsuccessful purchase at one of the many "cozy" stores that blare music too loud.

Utsu sticks close to me, and always has one head watching me when we're out here. He has to have been trained if he does that. If he wasn't, he'd just wander off and/or let me walk into trouble. More than once he's grabbed ahold of my shirt and tugged me aside, only to have a bicyclist come zooming down the sidewalk a half a minute later.

If you think of him as noble, it's wise to throw that thought away. When I go out, I always bring my fishing rod and tackle and try to fish... Yes, I have the faint hope that I'll catch something. It never happens, but I thought... What if I had Utsu with me? What if he was a good luck charm?

He wasn't.

The only thing I caught when I brought him with me was a fish that was stolen by a Meowth as soon as I removed it from the rod. Utsu was too busy laughing at what happened to be of any help, since he sits next to me.

So I tried shoving him into the water. You know what it's like, trying to shove a 200-lb-ish bird? It's like moving a house. A house covered in feathers with three heads.

'course houses don't shove back...

You can probably figure the rest out -- I got pushed in instead. But now, looking back? Something wasn't right. It wasn't that my rod and bait followed me in, or that any of the magikarps staring at me didn't try to splash me and gaped as usual. I got an excepted snerk and laugh from other fishermen and passing people, but there was something else, too. Oh well -- I'll figure that out later...

Entry Seven - Carrying Service, Anyone?

The more time I spend with Utsu, the more I learn of his various quirks, likes and dislikes. I think, the more time we spend together... The more he gets used to me, and the less I have to fight him in a test of wills.

My latest test came in the form of a small harness. You see, since I have a nice, big, strong pokemon to carry my fishing gear... Why don't I let him carry it? It took me a day to make it out of cloth, but even longer to convince him to let me put it on him. The day after I made it, he almost tore it in half! ...well, he tore it by a third... But in any event! After being squawked at lots of times, I managed to bribe him... Or at least, one of his heads. With pokefood, but as soon as the other two saw what one was getting, then it was pretty easy to strap the thing on.

After that, I put small weights in it to get him used to it for several hours, then removed them for a break (with the harness on -- I don't want to go through putting it on again, thanks!). In two days, we got to double the amount my tackle box and rod were. I left the harness on him the whole time -- perhaps the more he gets used to it, the easier it'll be to put it on him. I don't doubt that he would be able to remove it himself - I saw more than one of his heads at different times turning to study the contraption.

Tomorrow, I'll see how he fares with my equipment in it... Really, the harness is made out of belt-like things and an old blanket, so it shouldn't be too difficult for him to have on...

Entry Eight - Another Dunk in the Lake

It's been a week since I created the harness. Through experimentation, I managed to get Utsu to carry around 60 pounds with the harness. Anything above that much will get two of his heads to turn around to the harness and work together to loosen the straps and make whatever he was carrying slide off... The harness would come tumbling after while the third head smirked at me as best a bird can.

I even got him to carry me!

...a few paces. Then he dumped me off while chattering to himself. Jerk.

At least he's at the point where I can put the harness back on him without too much of a difficulty. He's sneaky, though -- if I'm not watching his heads, then one of them will peck either my arm or hands. While it's a bit sudden and slightly painful at times, he at least is helping me with my reactions.

With the gear in place, I lead Utsu to my fishing spot by the lake. It's a nice, shaded location, complete with its own tree. At first I was chided for my choice, as it's been claimed that there are not fishes in the water -- but the shadows that dart around beneath the water say otherwise. While I fished, I gave Utsu his lunch -- just two cups of pokefood, as I space out the amount a Dodrio needs throughout the day instead of giving him one main meal. As usual, one of his heads ate while the other two looked around. One watched me (partially unsettling, while also calming -- it's always good to know that someone's watching your back!) while the other looked around.

Like every other day, I wound up with nothing -- either the fish got away, or they stole my bait. I reeled in my line for the last time when something hard hit me from behind. It shouldn't be a surprise that it was Utsu, who seemed to tell me that my reactions were slow. Still.

In the water, though... It was weird. The sides of my fingers felt numb, as if there should be something there... but wasn't. The same thing happened to my ears and feet -- something wasn't right. I remember seeing a shadow dart near me, but before I could move two things pinched my shoulders hard and dragged me up and out -- Utsu!!

I did my best to help him by scrambling out -- one of his heads let go and joined the other to peck at something in the water. I, meanwhile, went to go quickly pack up the rest of my things -- once I was out of the way, Utsu followed and paused long enough to let me restock the things on him before he began trotting away, looking back as if expecting me to follow.

I still can't shake the feeling... The feeling of wrong and the fear of... whatever that was.

Entry Nine - Ask and Ye Shalt Receive...

"When the world was still young, it was common to see the unseen daily. Dragons flew the skies; unicorns ran freely through the forests... Such was life. There was no cause for strife until a pixie crossed the line in tricking a human prince. Angered and humiliated, the prince began an all-out war against the "magic" folk, having it set in his mind to never let a human such as himself fall to such a level of embarrassment ever again.

He never got that far, though. Those who were considered "magical" were wise, and would rather not fight having made friends with the humans. But, if they were caught in their forms, then it would be end for them.

That is, until the same pixie who tricked the human came forth.

"Humans see what they want to see," the pixie reasoned, "So if we change forms and appear not like ourselves, then what reason do they have for hunting us? We'll be able to stay close to our friends, but it may take some time to get used to the 'new' us..."

It was agreed upon. However, the spirits of Air, Earth, Fire and Water were displeased. They were spirits; they did not wish to become creatures like the rest! They reasoned that if they all were creatures, then who would be there to make sure that the "new" creatures, too, weren't killed?

Through persuasion, the magical creatures agreed that the spirits should try their hands at being humans... or close to. They may have worn the guise of humans, but at heart they were their element. They were a Slyph, an Earth-dweller, a Salamander or an Undine at heart...
"

...And an Undine is what I am. Partially, at least according to my mother, who I talked about my weird experience to. Through time, the Spirit-turned-Humans passed their powers through their bloodlines, acting like a human in every way -- from pretending to age, to dying, to being reborn or appearing suddenly, again and again. An Undine was in my family on my mother's side at some point... Sometimes, someone with a bit of a water-spirit's power would appear, sometimes it wouldn't.

Lucky me for having it.

However, it seems to only appear when I'm immersed in water... But even then, is all of this a fairy tale? It might be how pokemon first came to be, with Utsu the Dodrio really being a Hydra instead of the friendly feathered fiend he is.

I suspect that this is, really, just a "How Pokemon Appeared" story, with the added bit of elemental spirits thrown in by my mother to explain the weird feeling as an excuse to cover up an "I don't know."

I wrote this here before I forget it, as I'm going to go play Fireball Soccer with some of my friends. If I didn't write this, then chances are... I'd completely forget!
