 'Sande hummed to herself as she walked, weaving between the trees and summer grasses. This was her favorite time of year; she wasn't sure if that was something she had just decided or if it had been in place since her youth but that didn't matter. She couldn't remember her family but she knew her name and she knew where to find food and water. What she didn't know, that bothered her the most, was where she belonged.
Sighing at the thought, Melisande's steps slowed, bringing her to a vibrant glade that was split in half by a small stream. Moving over to it, she settled down to nibble on the fresh, crisp vegetation that grew along the water's edge.

 Pua had been laying in the shade among tall flower plants that matched the varying colors of his pelt and scales. It was warm out and mid afternoon, a time when he liked a nice doze and knew his "herd" was just inside the tree line not far from him.
But a new presence roused him from his noon snooze. The light scent of a young mare on the other side of the glade. The soft sounds of the stream all that seperated them. Slowly he lifted his head above the flowers and saw the green scaled back of another kirin with a brilliant orange mane. He flared his nose, taking in what scent he could.

Unaware that she was being watched, Melisande continued to browse, moving up and down the watercourse. "Ooh, clover!" she said with delight, coming across a thick, vibrant green bunch of the tasty plant. Humming to herself again, 'Sande happily munched until she was satisfied.
Pleased with herself over her find, she lifted her head from grazing and turned around, spying the tall flowers. Melisande didn't notice the stallion among them, at least not until she ventured over to sniff the colorful blooms and found herself face to face with him.
"Oh..my. Hello," she said, more curious than startled. "I didn't see you there. You blend in quite nicely."

He had watched her delight over finding the nice patch of clover that he himself loved to nibble. But when he realized that she was coming ever closer to his spot, he stilled and watched her. It was when she actually spotted the flowers and came straight at him that his head ducked a bit lower. Her curiosity caused a smile to venture across his face as he took the sight of her up close in.
"Hello," he said. "I do don't I. One reason I like this patch of shade more so than another."
He rose slowly to his feet and shook himself off. Glancing at her he gave another smile. "I am 'Ano'i pua. Pua for short. What is your name?"

A little short even for a mare, Melisande had to tilt her head back slightly and look up at the stallion as he rose to his feet. "That makes sense. I prefer tall grasses and wooded areas, myself," she said, smiling. Then, dipping her head a little, she introduced herself.
"My name is Melisande. You can shorten it however you like. A pleasure to meet you, Pua."

He grinned and then his ears flicked back at the sound of a snort not far off. But then his attention went back to the pretty mare in the front of him.
"So...what are you doing in these parts? Have you lost your herd?" he inquired. Deep down he hoped she wasn't part of another herd because she was quite lovely and he was hoping for a mare of his own to add to the small herd. He was sure Yugure would be delighted for a new member too and Kiyomi he was sure would like another mare to befriend.

'Sande blushed a little bit, a small self-depricating smile coming to her face.
"Honestly, I don't know if I ever had a herd... I can't remember any family and I'm not even sure if Melisande was the name given to me or if I just made it up along the way," she told him with complete candor, cocking her head to the side in the closest gesture she could come to a shrug. It honestly didn't bother her. She was happy and she'd met a nice stallion.

He looked rather concerned upon hearing about Sande's predicament. She had no memory of a herd or family and she wasn't even sure her name was the one given to her. Shock suddenly appeared on his face and he stared wide eyed at her unabashly.
"You serious?" he asked. "Well that's...no good. To be honest...I don't know of my family either. As an egg my adoptive father found me and raised me. So I guess I can understand. We form a sort of "baby" herd. Its just me, my adoptive father Yugure, Kiyomi, and their daughter Yozora. Yoru their son may be around but I dunno."
He let this hang out there for a moment. It was a bit of information to digest. "They are just in the forest there...." he said looking over his shoulder towards the tree line. Looking over at her he ventured to say, "You could join us if you like. I'm sure Yugure wouldn't mind. He's the lead stallion."

Melisande smiled at his obvious concern and shock. She thought it was sweet that, after just meeting her, he was so moved by her situation.
"I'm serious but it's alright. I'm glad that you were adopted by this...Yugure, you said?" she asked, smiling a little more. It had been a lot of information to take in but she was fairly sure she already had the other herd members' names memorized. Since her memory was so hazy on her early life, she'd trained herself to remember new things almost instantly.
At the invitation to join with his herd, though, it was her turn to be shocked. She'd just been thinking how nice it would be to belong somewhere, to have someone to look to for comfort, protection and companionship.
"Uh, I..I don't know," she stuttered, feeling a bit flustered. "Are you sure they wouldn't mind?"

Pua smiled at her. "Well...Yugure gave me leave to bring in a mare for myself. That is if I had met one I particularly liked. We have just met but I feel that you would fit in well." It has been some time and the season have been passing. Although still young Pua was a mature stallion who was in need of a companion when not with the full herd or someone he could return to after border patrol.
"Why don't you join us and see if you like it. If after some time you find that this herd is not what you had hoped for....you will be free to go. But...." he smiled, it reached his eyes, "if you find that you like it here with us...then I hope you will stay."

'A mare for himself?' she thought, her eyes going wide and the blush returning to her face with a vengeance. Even more flustered, Melisande lowered her eyes, periodically glancing back at him then quickly away again. She wasn't sure how she felt about the connotation of his words... "As your mate?" she blurted out, flushing right up to the tips of her ears.
