What operating system are you running, and what version of Excel do you have?
Does the Japanese text show up fine on these forums?
Finally, have you set up your computer to type in Japanese (i.e. can you type in Japanese on these forums)?

If you have any kind of google or gmail account, you can do it in google docs and it should support the Japanese IME (regardless of the specs of your computer). If not, you need to go into your region and language options and get the East Asia package. I know on PCs it's just the second option in your language tab, I'm too unfamiliar with Mac's to know where there language settings are but I thought that those were standard on most Mac's (nowadays anyway).
