Eastern Commerce was nothing like Middling, or even Commerce Corridors. For one, it could probably fit five Middlings, easily.

And then there were the prices. He blanched at every storefront he passed by, eyeing the cost of a simple t-shirt with deep disdain. Everything was ridiculously expensive, and of such low quality he knew that t-shirt would be rags within three months.

For a man looking to find some hard-weather clothes to last him out in Oldpeka, this wasn't boding well. Every sweatshirt he inspected looked like it might fall apart with the slightest of rips.

That wouldn't do. He growled under his breath, hands digging into his pockets as he wandered down the street, features covered with the worn grey hoodie, and tail hidden down the leg of his pants. Aside from the sharp look to his teeth and the tattoo sprawling across the bridge of his nose, he blended in, for the most part.

This was ridiculous. He was hungry, and in need of new clothes, and the shopping center of the city wanted him to bleed himself dry.

Simply ridiculous.

It hadn’t been that long, she knew, but Sarah had already bored herself silly with the small apartment her family had been given. So here she was, aimlessly wandering the vast area of Eastern Commerce. It was almost immediately apparent that the area in itself was huge, but the growing population of shoppers had steadily made her more and more nervous. She had hidden her attributes well with a headband to hide her odd ears and pulling her tail through belt loops, but she was still paranoid of being caught as a godling.
And as always, the cat girl had attracted a small army of cats. Thankfully, there were far less cats here than in Southern, but she still had to deal with about three or four following cats every time she went somewhere.
Sarah had also been browsing a few shops, looking almost uninterested at some of the crap they sold. It was weird, Southern itself wasn’t a really big place compared to Central, but at least they sold some better stuff.

While she was contemplating sending some of the cats inside one of the stores just to piss the employees off, she noticed a darker man in the corner of her eye. It wasn’t really how he looked that had intrigued her, but that sudden flair of caution that creeped into a familiar part of her mind. It was that one guy from the boat! Carefully, she watched him pass her, trying to beat the urge to start a conversation with him. Of course, she lost, and began to catch up to the man. When she was close enough to that she wouldn’t have to shout to catch his ear, she spoke. “A lot weirder here, huh?”

Really, he should probably listen to his instincts more often. With how often he had to stamp the feline ones down (ignore the sounds, ignore the movements, ignore the urge to chase and pounce and rip and bite, ignore tastes and smells), he also ended up ignoring the Godling senses.

So it was with some surprise that his head swung in her direction, scrutinizing the comparatively tinier Godling before him from beneath the brim of his hood, before he deemed her a non-threat for now.

Even if his shoulders bristled, reflexively, at the presence of another cat in his area - this whole square mile was his, his, his, the jaguar snarled in his mind, and with a frown he pushed those thoughts away.

"Da," he agreed, quietly, after a moment. "It is," he trailed off, trying to find the right words as he looked around at the spaces and buildings and people surrounding them. "Busier."

Fast-paced. Urban. Chic and flashy and shiny new, hardly worn in like Southern had been.

"I think v'e have met before." He was unsure - she looked familiar, and smelled familiar, but he knew he'd never talked to her. He wracked his brain, trying to remember, before it finally struck him. "At the gathering, v'hen v'e v'ere called by Anubis. V'e v'eren't introduced to each other, though."

Somewhat awkwardly, he held out a hand to shake - not quite sure if that's what you did when introducing yourself to a girl, since he hadn't had this sort of occasion occur often.

"My name's Valeriu."

“Yeah. Well, at least it’s here.” The girl mused, looking the man over now that he had realized she was there. He didn’t seem as bone-chillingly frightening as he had earlier, but he still gave off an air that unsettled her—but it was more of her feline instincts than anything.

She gave him a strange look when he said that they had met before. “Really?” Now her own mind was reeling, trying to recall anything about the man in front of her. “Ah, I remember that! That was a while ago.” Now she knew. He was a whole lot younger back then, she guessed his god had seen to that.

Sarah took his hand in a firm grip, shaking it. It may not have been the proper way to greet a woman, but she still wasn’t really used to being treated as such. “I’m Sarah. Nice to meet you, Valeriu.” Huh, his name was really odd, but it matched his accent.
After that thought, she had looked around at her feet to look at the small army that had began to rest around her. “Sorry about the cats, they tend to hang around me.”

He grinned slightly with the handshake, understated, but present enough to reward her with the sight of sharpened canines.

"Nice to meet you, too, Sarah," he returned, quite solemnly. He looked down at the cats with something akin to amusement. "I do not mind. I like cats."

The quirk to his voice said he was well aware of the irony in that statement. Though, maybe conscious of himself as an adult, or keeping in mind his appearance, he didn't reach down to pluck one up for cuddles like he used to in ages past, letting the creatures lounge in peace.

The temptation was there, however.

"I hope that your family is settling in v'ell. All of this," he gestured, vaguely - the Game, the bomb, the new City, "must be very tough on them."

He'd honestly felt bad for the families he'd watched on the boat ride over; they were scared and quiet and shell-shocked, and he couldn't even imagine what they were going through. He'd never had to beg, plead, or explain to his loved ones that they had to leave, immediately.

As she was met with Vale’s grin, the small poke from his fang did not surprise her in the least. She knew he had feline attributes, even though she did not know which kind—with those teeth, she guessed a bigger, more violent cat. She would still have to be careful around him.

“They should be fine after a while,” The girl said with a shrug, “What choice do they have, anyway?”

She really didn’t put much thought into how her parents felt with the whole ordeal, but probably because she didn’t want to think about them too much—they were still on her s**t list for telling her she was a boy for so many years.
“They’ll get over it.” She added suddenly, her words callous.

He cocked his head in surprise, and though his eyes weren't visible, mild disapproval was etched into the way his mouth dropped back into a frown.

"It is not good to be angry v'ith your family," he advised, lightly, being careful not to lecture, because he remembered exactly what it felt like to be a child and be lectured by an adult, "in this game, they are really all you have. If you lose them v'ithout making amends, it leaves something here that you v'ill never be rid of." He tapped above his heart, the mirror underneath the thin, zippered hoodie making a quiet thock noise.

"It is best to put bitterness aside, and v'ork to make things better." Embarrassment washed over him (somehow, being around girls always made him say the stupidest, sappiest things), and his head turned away before the red flooding his face could be seen. "At least, I think so. I know there are bad families out there, but you still cared for them enough to save them."

And now he just sounded like an idiot. From now on, if he wanted to retain his image of intimidation, he should just keep his mouth shut.

"Ah," conversation change, go! "I v'as thinking of grabbing something to eat." That was a lie. Sort of. "You hungry?"

Her head drooped down a bit as she listened to Vale silently. She knew that every single thing he said was right, and she was just being childish for not wanting to forgive them. “… I know,” the girl muttered, trying not to look at him. Looking at someone as they were getting onto you about something is one of the worst things, she knew, it was like egging them on.

As he turned his face away in embarrassment, Sarah looked back up at him. She didn’t really see his face flush, so it was confusing to her. “Er… You okay?”

Hearing the new topic of conversation, she perked up a little bit. “Oh, uh… Sure.” She was getting a little hungry, and she had gotten a little money earlier in the day, so it should have been fine.

"Good, good," he approved, turning back to the street and taking a breath, before starting to wander further down the walk. "Come, I smell good things this v'ay."

Everything else smelled like plastic and pure grease - not a good sign when it came to food. But at the other end of the suburbs he was sure he could smell something a little more home-cooked, authentic and delicious.

His stomach growled, reminding him that it wouldn't do much good, but Valeriu could at least still enjoy the taste.

"You are not a girl-vegetarian, are you?" he asked, dubiously, looking down at her as if he couldn't quite understand why so many of the girls he knew (at work, at the daycare) twittered on and on about the appeals of veggie burgers. Sure, he enjoyed healthy foods; sure, salads could be delicious.

But when you desecrated the sanctity of meat like that - that, he couldn't understand. Fake meat?

As he followed the smells of food, a strangely familiar scent wafted occasionally beneath his nose - pleasant, reassuring, and he couldn't yet put a finger on what it was.

As Sarah began to follow the man, her awful sense of foreboding seemed to fade. Maybe he wasn’t as scary as she thought, and that a lot of what she had felt when she saw him on the boat was just her overreacting.

“A what?” She asked back, a little surprised at the question. “You mean those really pale girls that don’t eat meat?” At the thought of even being compared to those little pansies, she frowned. “Hell no.”
She remembered a few she had encountered—they were frighteningly tiny and complained on how her and her family was ‘murdering’ animals for their enjoyment. It was confusing, though. Plants were living, too, and by Sarah’s standards they were murdering just as much as she was.

He looked relieved at that, shoulders relaxing just a smidgen.

"Good. It is much harder to track down a baked potato than a burger," he explained, ruefully. The comment tickled his memory; of potatoes and tubers, where he'd unsuccessfully tried to coerce Tepin into trying some of the fish they'd caught.

It was strange, how readily his mind had returned to her. Strange and painful, different from whenever he thought of his parents-- his nose caught that scent again, layered close by underneath the rest of the smells of the city, and he stopped abruptly in his tracks in recognition.

Vanilla beans, coffee, and chocolate, mixed with the Scottish Summer soap brand that he'd preferred to buy - his eyes closed momentarily before flaring open, looking around anxiously.

His favorite smell - hers.

It was close by, in the very immediate vicinity, but for the life of him he couldn't catch sight of her give-away black-and-blonde hair, couldn't hear her voice or listen for her exact footsteps.

"Strange," he muttered, shaking his head. His mind was playing tricks on him, he realized, humorlessly.

Or maybe it was her ghost, haunting him.

"Sorry, I thought I smelled something familiar from the old City," he apologized, embarrassed, re-starting his tread.

The girl grinned, nodding. “Yeah, true.”
How long had it even been since Sarah went out to eat for a change? She knew it had been a while, since most of the time she had either been fed her mother’s cooking or scrounging out in the streets for whatever she could find. Maybe it was time to actually get something halfway decent in her stomach. After all, she could feel the tremors in the organ almost like clockwork now.

Well, this was awkward. Sarah paused briefly, watching the man as he reacted to a smell with a heightened interest. She tried sniffing the air in order to catch the scent herself, but to no avail. “Odd, I don’t smell anything.” She commented. Well, nothing out of the ordinary, at least—maybe he had a better sense of smell?

"Maybe it is just ghosts." He laughed under his breath, debating whether or not he was going insane, the smell still tickling against his senses, distracting him.

"Anyv'ay - aha!" His bark of success was quickly followed by him bee-lining for the small line of tiny shops crowded into the other corner of Eastern Commerce. "Perfect. I v'as v'orried v'hen I couldn't find any good stores, like back in Middilng, but here they are hiding."

And it wasn't just food, but clothes and other goods, too, with higher quality and reasonable prices. Compared to the things on display in the rest of Commerce, Valeriu couldn't quite believe how anyone could pick brand over everything else.

"V'hat do you feel like?" Valeriu knew what he felt like - the scent of mouth-watering burger was calling to him, but Sarah was the one who actually needed to eat. Plus, ladies had first pick for dining - that was simply polite.

“Hm, maybe. You never know.” She commented, shrugging. Ghosts were a definite possibility now, knowing everything else that goes on.

The godling just stared, almost dumbfounded when she saw the man run off around a corner. After a few seconds, she gave chase in hopes of finding out what he was so excited about. Of course, she found out when she turned the corner herself and saw a large array of the type of small shops she was familiar with in Southern. “Oh, cool, at least we weren’t the only ones with these stores”

At the question, she rose a brow. “Huh? Oh, whatever you want is fine by me.”

He grinned, his suggestion already on the tip of his tongue as he followed the scent, stopping in front of the chosen storefront.

"Burger Palace, it is," he declared, reading the sign, and immensely pleased that her non-decision had worked in his favor. It was a new breed of restaurant; a converted diner car that was a throwback to the fifties, a theme that was very rarely seen in Southern.

It seemed modern metropolises liked antique ages more than they liked the modern day.

Valeriu was certainly in a good mood, now; excitable and childishly enthusiastic as he led the way into the lit diner.

"Come, come, it is my treat." He flashed a grin back at her from beneath the edge of the hoodie, it going unspoken that he was A) technically older, and B) a manly man-gentleman, obviously. "I haven't eaten out in-" He faltered, actually realizing with some surprise that the last time he'd gone out was with his parents. There was the few cafes he and Tepin, Quinn, or the twins had dropped into, but no actual sit-down places like this. "Years, I think."
