I have recently become quite interested in trying out either yoga or pilates to possibly maintain my weight and maybe tone a few areas...though I do not know which to choose first: yoga or pilates? I found a wonderful yoga/pilates center in my area, though the classes seem pretty expensive...I don't know if it'll be worth the while, since there are yoga dvd's...though, which would be most effective in learning?
Discuss: - which do YOU prefer? yoga or pilates? - pros and cons - suggestions?

I've done both haha; I prefer pilates since it's more.. active? Yoga is really calming.. more stretching, balance, being aware of your body. I'd recommend going to a yoga class since an instructor can help you with poses and show you how to balance properly. =] Pilates is one of those things you can get a video and it's pretty easy to follow along.

I really like both. I find pilates to be more useful though, because I'm an athlete and it helps me with balance and tone. Since studies show that static stretching can decrease athletic performance by up to 6%, I don't do yoga very much, but I still enjoy it.

Hehe. (please mind my newbie-ness!) I have unflattering arm flab...do you think pilates would help tone my arms overtime with a little help from a resistance band?

I've heard that there are a few different types of yoga and it doesn't necessarily have to be a slow and soft exercise. To be honest, I haven't formally done either but I'm sure that my trainers have incorporated a little of both into my normal routine without telling me where it came from. If you're trying to tone, however, wouldn't lifting weights or something along the lines of P90X get the job done and over with more quickly? And here's my cheapass lazy a** at-home work out. I think pilates would be more apt to tone your muscles and give you more of a workout. Yoga is good for muscle tone and weight loss, too, but I think it takes more time and is less good for building muscles. One of my best friends did pilates classes for just a couple of months and got crazy-cool abs eek On the cost, keep in mind that you'll probably need to buy at least a few DVDs because after a little while of doing just one workout your body gets conditioned to it and it stops working as well.

Have any of you tried bellydancing? It's lots of fun, and a better workout than you might think, especially as you speed things up. There are "Shimmy" videos on Youtube.
I was fortunate to have as a friend in the '70's an Iranian girl, who taught me to dance. There are as many variations on the dances as there are cultures, so check out all the different moves that are posted on Youtube to see what you like. It's as hard as you make it, and lots of fun!

It's as hard as you make it, and lots of fun! i'm a bellydancer, i study under Ophilia Tzighan, i love it because it's wonderful cardio, and relatively low-impact, if you're a fat girl like me. this and swimming are my two favorite forms of exercise. i've been told i'm a natural and i learn faster than most people as far as just picking up the moves. i highly suggest to anyone that has the time/money, look up classes near you. this is one of the best things out there!

I bellydance too! ^_^ It is a very good low impact workout. I have also done pilates and yoga. I prefer yoga and usually do it to warm up before I bellydance.

My personal preference in Yoga. I've tried a little of both, and Pilates hurt me. I have a messed up neck and a weak back though. In turn, my mother prefers Pilates because Yoga hurts her. *shrugs* Just goes to show not everyone is the same.

I'm currently trying both (yay for excess!) at the YMCA in my area because both are available and I'm not sure which to go with. If you have any interest, YMCA's have sliding scales for cost- it ends up being about 25/month for a single person as poor as me. Which, for a couple of swimming pools and all the classes I take, is pretty decent. Maybe try something like that so you can try out the full range of classes too? They also have a thing called "TRX" at ours that involves some sort of suspending oneself from the ceiling that I'd like to try....

I'm not a fan of yoga but I did every minute of it when I was going through P90X as directed and I can definitely appreciate the stretching and balance benefits. Alone though yoga doesn't do much for building muscle even though you need good control to do some advanced positions. You don't see many buff yogis, they're just thin.
I'm a big fan of weights and short, high impact bodyweight exercises. I wouldn't mind trying pilates but just on a whim, not as a serious daily thing. I know a lot of trainers use it in addition to other things but not usually as a stand alone activity if the person wants weight maintenance/loss and muscle conditioning.
TRX doesn't really suspend you from the ceiling. It's attached and you use it to suspend your weight but you don't hang from it like an aerial gymnast. Most peoples' ceilings wouldn't allow that.

Yoga is my preferred favorite. Hot yoga kicks some serious booty. 90 minutes of yoga in a 115 degree room will make you sweat off some serious pounds if you do it often enough.
I've only done Pilates a couple of times (my old roommate practiced her Pilates instructing skills on me, she was training to become an instructor). I've heard Pilates is a little more hardcore as far as toning goes but man does it hurt me!
