Gaia is designed to appeal to young teenagers, more girls than guys. In my experience at least, it seems that girls are more prone to using social sites such as this, and teenagers (especially towards the earlier end of such) are the age group most prone to it.
They're just appealing to a demographic.
I hadn't really noticed until you said something.
