Ok, it was official: Trine Weyr had too many people! The kitchen was slightly short-staffed today, so Gabriel along with a couple of others had gotten stuck cleaning dishes and utensils after the very large afternoon meal. This is taking for sharding ever~!!!! the young teen thought in dismay, eying the giant pile that they still had left to go. No, this wasn't the first time she had ever worked the kitchens, but it certainly wasn't one of her favorite tasks. The teen let out an exasperated sigh before setting to work on scrubbing furiously at the next plate. This task wouldn't be so annoying if she didn't know that they would end up being subjected to even more chores after this was finally done. Things had been harder than usual for them ever since those troublesome Benden healers had arrived. "Shards!" So frustrated was she by the thoughts of the Healers and the way that everyone was being jerked around recently that she had accidentally put a bit too much pressure on the plate in her hands and completely shattered it, creating quite the shocking sound in the kitchen. Lovely. Now I have to clean up the pieces as well.

Akaya had been quite entranced by a soap bubble when the sound of the plate breaking sent her back to the present, and she glanced over to witness the frustrated plight of her fellow candidate--whom she vaguely recalled by sight but otherwise did not know much of. Still, tensions were running high in general, and this wasn't the first time she'd witnessed accidents of irritation.

She reached over to collect a few of the pieces that had fallen closer to her way, offering them to Gabriel with a sympathetic smile. "We'll be done before too long, so just hang in there."

Gabriel had already started collecting the fragmented pieces when the other Candidate offered her aid. "Thanks," she replied, both for the pieces being handed over and for the sympathy. The teen had seen this other Candidate around a few times now, but hadn't really gotten a chance to talk to her since the new girl arrived. "I don't think I've caught your name yet. My name's Gabriel." Perhaps this person had been privy to some of the strange going ons around the Weyr? She'd be sure to ask soon enough. Might as well pass the time in a useful way while cleaning, right?

"Well met, Gabriel. I'm Akaya, lately of the Harper Hall," she offered in return. She felt it always sounded vaguely pretentious to add one's craft, but it also saved time, so more often than not she'd slip it in anyway. And, to be sure, people talked to Harpers, even apprentice ones--they had a reputation for playing several tunes, after all. And she was almost sure that she'd seen Gabriel closely talking with several of the other candidates, so perhaps an exchange of information was in order...

Oh, a Harper? This was perfect! Harpers were always supposed to be in the know about things, right? She might have picked up on some important information around the Weyr. "Nice to meet you, Akaya," she replied, considerably cheered up from just a moment ago. Then, lowering her voice so that they wouldn't be overheard, she said, "So, I have to ask, have you seen or heard anything about strange flit activity lately? Maybe about them carrying things and whatnot?" Hopefully she might get lucky with this one.
PostPosted: Tue Jul 13, 2010 10:51 am

Akaya blinked at the inquiry--it would be news to her. "I'm afraid that I haven't...though I can certainly keep an eye out." Her extent of flit contact had been occasionally trying to encourage the flitter's owner to allow participation in her draconic choral scheme, but with all the extra chores she hadn't made very much progress on even that. Carrying things? Well, flits being used as messengers wasn't out of the ordinary at all, so far as she knew. What else could they possibly be carrying around? Anything more than a message would be too much weight, wouldn't it?

Still, she'd gotten something new (even if it was cryptic) so it was only polite to offer what she did know in return. "Mostly I've been hearing speculation about Benden's motives...that they're here just to help, or else they're trying to get at Malvren." As much as she wanted to believe Benden had altruistic reasons for being here, born and raised on one of Trine's beholden Holds she was far more likely to believe the latter. She didn't like the whispers about trade sanctions either.

"Get at Malvren?" Gabriel replied back, blinking in surprise. "What on Pern would they be trying to get back at Malvren for?" As far as she knew the only thing they might possibly not like the island Weyr for is their breeding of Atypicals, but they did the exact same thing here at Trine. That was certainly strange, and something she should probably keep in mind herself.

"Well, keep an eye and ear out for anything strange with the flits. Not too long ago I saw a whole bunch of them coming from what looked like the Weyrleader's wing, and I think one of them was carrying a piece of paper. I might not have thought too much of it if that healer hadn't started interrogating us-- there were two other with me-- immediately after." She grimaced in distaste of the memory as she disposed of the last of the dish pieces. "Don't know whose firelizards they were, but the whole thing seemed rather suspicious."

"Haven't the foggiest," Akaya admitted, though she looked thoughtful as she added, "But doesn't Trine have a reputation for being more traditional than Malvren? Perhaps it's just a matter of progressives and conservatives...politics usually is, in one way or another." Still, there were better ways to court Trine than the "invasion", as the weyrfolk were calling it, so if getting Trine to side against Malvren was the case, then why take this approach?

Gabriel's story was a strange one, but it didn't sound false. "What did the healer ask you?" Akaya asked, brow furrowed.

"Psh, I hardly even remember. More of the same crap they've been asking everyone I suppose," she replied, starting on the next dish (and being more careful of her grip this time). "'What is your opinion of the Hatching?' 'Does anything stand out about how Hatchings or Flights are handled?' etc etc... All the obvious things that they've asked a million times over." The politics theory was certainly a thought, but somehow Gabriel felt that there was much more to it than that. "Ah well, we'll find out more in time. So, apart from all of this crazy drama and the endless load of chores, are you enjoying it here at the Weyr so far?" It was usually interesting talking to Candidates from other places and getting their perspective on things.

"I have no idea what they're searching for in their questions, but they must be very concerned about finding it," Akaya said thoughtfully. Well, she knew that fertility was the primary issue--or at least the cover story--but there had to be more to it than that.

She had just grabbed another dish when Gabriel questioned how she found the Weyr, and she scrubbed as she answered cheerily, "I'm enjoying it very much. It's very different from Hold and Hall--well, I expected it to be so--but it's as nice as all the ballads say. Oh--are you Weyrborn then?" she added, blinking as she realized it was the only logical conclusion from the girl's words. That would certainly explain the absolute venom she held for the Benden folk.

Hm, that was true, just what were they looking for in their interrogations? Were the questions of eggs and dragons just a farce to cover up for something more? It was certainly something to think about.

"Yup, born and raised here," Gabriel relied with a grin, quite proud of her home Weyr. "Wouldn't mind going out and about to explore out parts of Pern, but for now I'm quite content with life here. Both of us might have that chance someday after all, right?" She was referring of course to if they should be Impressed by dragons. Then they would be able to travel anywhere on Pern in the blink of an eye.

"I'm from Eron, originally, so just a bit further north," Akaya said with a smile. "And dragonrider or not, exploring Pern is on my list of things to do! That's why I went to the Harper Hall. It would be much easier to do with a dragon though, I think," she added, chuckling. She wouldn't mind a life as a weyrsinger, either, though having a Harper at the weyr who was also a dragonrider tended to be more a matter of chance than a real position, as the Weyr's assigned Harpers didn't have to be riders at all. "Is this your first Hatching, or have you stood as a candidate before then?" she asked, curious. Since there was no Thread falling, she knew the tradition was to let the children of the weyr stand quite young, if they so chose.

"Well, whether it be via dragonback or other means, I wish you fun times in your travels," Gabriel replied with a grin, sincerely happy for the other girl. At least she had her affairs in order. "Nah, this isn't my first Hatching. Been standin since I was twelve. It's always a very exciting thing." Nothing quite like watching new dragons enter the world from the perspective of the Sands. Even with her previous failures she was still looking quite forward to this one. Twenty new dragons made for nice odds.

"Any tips for the rest of us poor sods then?" Akaya asked with a chuckle. She imagined it always would be exciting--no Hatching would ever be the same as another, and the candidates did change from time to time as well. "Or advice in general for Candidates. In my ample free time--" (her smile made it clear she was being facetious) "--I'm sort of trying to compose an attempt at a teaching ballad, for candidates. More to give myself something of the craft to do than because I think it'd be useful to anyone else, but you never know."

Gabriel let out a small laugh and added her now clean dish to the pile. With her now free hands, she ticked off the items as she listed them. "Yeah, wear thick shoes on the Sands, do not fall on or near the eggs, and don't piss off the Candidatemaster." She picked up the next dish and continued cleaning. "No, but in all seriousness, I'd say just be yourself out there. I can understand nerves-- only natural when there's a very big and watchful mother dragon nearby-- but don't try to present yourself as something that your not. I'm sure the dragons can easily see past any sort of farce anyway, so what's the point, right? Besides, your partner will be impressing for you, not for how you normally present yourself to be. Well, that might have some effect on their decision perhaps, but you catch my drift. And as I said before, don't piss of the Candidatemaster. They have gifts for finding horrid punishments." The teen grimaced, scrubbing stubbornly at a smudge of food that refused to be removed.
