Nasuymi was in the dining area watching and studying very carefully. Since Benden had Invaded Trine, everyone had been quietly told to watch their backs. Nasuymi personally sneered at those who couldn't handle that their Weyr was thriving just fine. On their third day, one of the Healers had pulled her and a couple of the other creche workers away, leaving Marcellen upset but unable to protest. Hounded about how the children were taken care of and diet and other stupid stuff, Nasuymi had answered stiffly and done everything she could to get back to her wards and shelter them.
Her hazel eyes narrowed as a random group entered. A mix of Trine's riders, some new Candidates and a couple of the healer folk, a girl who had at least half a head on her caught her eyes right off the bat. Nasuymi had come to terms with who she was and enjoyed the sight of the long-limbed girl as she seemed to be following behind or with one of the Healers. Nasuymi couldn't tell. Either way, she held her mug of klah to her face and keep her look neutral. No point in drawing attention to herself. Besides, if she found out something useful, she could always report back to the Head Woman.

Whatever was going on in the Weyr, Lanakirene was blissfully unaware of it.
Or at least, that was the impression she gave off as she went about her day. Benden Healers? What, really? Huh, go figure. She had noticed there were a lot of extras, but....
Okay, so maybe the outward impression of being vapid was going to work against her, but it was easier than having to deal with the simmering rage of the rest of Trine as they resisted Benden. Frankly, she wasn't sure what was going on among the riders, nor what Benden was up to, but she knew that the influx of healers meant an influx of chances for her. While the Candidates complained about being run ragged, La followed in the footsteps of some of the greatest on Pern. And who could complain about that?
That said, any chance to sneak away from the bulk of the group was a good chance, because being a Candidate who all but lived in the Infirmary meant not very much time for anything at all. And so as she grabbed a bowl of curried fish and rivergrains, she excused herself from the company of the Benden healer she had been assisting and cast about for a table not occupied by healerfolk.
Oh.
Hello there.
Who was this looking at her? La didn't frown, thoughtful frowns weren't very her, but her eyes widened a bit before she flashed a brilliant, devil-may-care smile at Nasuymi. Admittedly, she had no idea who the girl was beyond recognizing her face, but hey! If someone was going to stare at her, she'd grin right back. And then she would head over, that s**t-eating grin still plastered all over her face.
"Hi," she said cheerfully as soon as she was close enough to Nasuymi to talk. "No fun sitting all by your lonesome. Mind if I join you?"

As the girl approached her, recognition registered on her face. It was the girl from lesson, the one who had backtalked and gotten herself thrown out. Nasuymi smiled. This was a girl she could admire for being so frank with what she thought. At least she was pretty up close as well as at a distance. Setting her klah mug down, Nasuymi moved over slightly in case the girl wanted to sit. "Ah know you. Yer the girl from class t'other day. You can join me sure, I dun mind one bit."
Looking back, she continued to watch the Healers and other strangers in their kitchens acting as if they belonged there and were not unwelcome guests. Her hazel eyes took in everything and tried to remember all sorts of details that might be useful later. "So, wuz tha' yer pun'shmen'? Helpin' 'em or t'is that wot you do?"

When Nasuymi brought up Candidate class, La grimaced, nose wrinkling in a particularly unattractive way as she bared all her teeth at the thought. "Yeah, for better or worse, that was me," she said, and though her expression indicated annoyance, her voice held a hint of pride. Nasuymi had noticed and remembered her? Hey, if it got her that, then....well, she'd take it. She'd take anything she could get if it got the ladies' attention. "Anyways, I just work with them, that's not part of the punishment. Healer work's what I do; this whole 'Candidate' thing is kind of just an afterthought, to be honest." She shrugged and redirected the conversation by smiling sheepishly at the other girl.
"I've seen you around before, but I'm going to be honest and admit that I can't really place you. You work in the creche in addition to your Candidate stuff, right? I'm La, by the way. Well, Lanakirene, but nobody calls me that."

"Trust me. Ya said wha' I wanted to and sure tha' ev'ryone else did too." Nasuymi rubbed a hand through her short hair and gave a grin. She liked leggy girls, then again... Secretly, Nasuymi enjoyed looking at many girls but didn't have a lot of time to lok at them. Pushing the klah pitcher and a mug over to La, she turned to watch the Benden Healers as they were ignored and pushed towards the farthest part of the kitchens. "Darned fools t'be comin' here an' pokin' 'bout in bizness tha's not theirs."
"A'yeah. I like workin' wi' the lil ones. Up 'til they start makin' changes. Then they get a'sorts o' ideas in their heads." She shook her head and continued on. "La is nice an' easy to 'member. O'course, if you don't mind me sayin', you got a look 'bout ye tha' is hard too forget."

"Good to know I wasn't alone," La said with a grin, the easiness returning to her voice and posture as she continued talking. "Sometimes I run my mouth off before I think, but usually I'm at least a little bit right." Honestly, she liked to think that she was always right and everyone else was just stupid. Buuuuut that was probably not entirely true. Ah well, she was close. When the other girl piped in about Benden poking its nose in...well, she just clammed up. Healers was healers and drama was drama, and La knew which bit was more important to her.
"Kids are.....well, they're kids," she said, deciding for once to choke back her glib outlook on life and not tell the pretty girl who had just informed her that she loved children that children were on her list of "things I really prefer not to deal with unless it's the end of the world".
Had Nasuymi just commented on her appearance? Curiouser and curiouser! "What, you mean the 'broomstick with arms and legs' look?" she said with a grin, running a hand through her hair and sitting up straight to emphasize her storklike build. "Yeah, there's only one me. I don't mind; I'd feel bad for any other girls." Cheeky wink, vibrant smile, and then, "You know, I'm sorry, I don't think I ever got your name."

"Prolly not a bad idea t'make sure yer right before ya say wot you gotta say," Nasuymi agreed the round about way. Sipping her klah and now almost enjoying herself, the creche worker went back to people watching. She was one who had no problems multi-tasking and in fact seemed to thrive on it. Her hazel eyes were once again scanning and taking in everything around her while she also managed to eye La out the corner of her vision.
"Tha' they are. Course, I don' plan on whelpin' any. A'teh end o' the night, they go where they go an' I go where I go. I stay wi' my folks in the workers' area. Tho' I got a bunk if I wan' it wi' the other Candidates." Nasuymi relayed this information. As a child of the Weyr but not of Weyr folk per say, she felt herself to have a slight advantage over some others. "M'name? I thought I gave it. Tis Nasuymi. Pleasure meetin' ya."

"A pleasure indeed, Nasuymi." La grinned, following the other girl's gaze and glancing out over the dining hall while she nibbled at her curry. She wasn't much of a one for people watching, per se; she much preferred to get out there and actually talk to everyone, but she could acknowledge the merit of watching before you did it. At least it'd help avoid the unpleasant people. Maybe. Depended on what you defined as unpleasant, she supposed.
"Seeing anyone interesting?" she asked, and then threw caution to the wind. "I think I lucked out on finding the most interesting person of the afternoon." And she turned a wry grin on her dining companion, pouring herself a cup of klah as she did so.

Nasuymi snorted, most unladylike, at her new companions comment. "Nah. Nothin' fancy or speshel 'bout me. But I'll take it an'ways."
She gave an appreciative grin to the girl and noticed that the Benden folk seemed to be trying to approach some of the older riders. Healers had to be healers, she supposed. After all, they were trying to help out their golds but they were a mite pesky for her. "You standin'?"

"Ehh. Flashier you are, the more you're trying to overcompensate for something, way I see it." She grinned, unconsciously falling into a pattern of speech closer to the rustic one of her dining companion.
The next question brought a break in her grinning, though, and La shrugged. "If the Weyrwoman allows me." She grimaced, remembering the lovely meeting O'rer had set up with Abigail for the following morning. "Honestly, I'm not sure why O'rer's throwing such a fit, but I guess whatever he's caught in his tailfork is whatever he's caught in his tailfork." Stick-in-the-a** attitude indeed. Not that La, in hindsight, didn't agree that she deserved punishment. But honestly, a meeting with the Weyrwoman? Felt a bit like overkill to her. "Not that I'm saying I wasn't a bint, just that there wasn't much reason to break out the firestone all at once."

Nasuymi laughed. She was liking this girl more and more. See? This was why she preferred women to men, especially those her age... There was no dancing with words or trying to figure out what they wanted. Straight to the point. "A'yeah. 'Gree wi' you on tha' one. Look a'them Lor' 'olders always dressin' fancy. An' any fella who is dressin' up bright or dangled bits wuld 'ave me worried."
Sensing that her Girl was in a good mood, Camm popped in from somewhere, probably gossiping with other flits again, and landed on her shoulder. Peering at the new person, she chittered happily and was almost thanking her for keeping her Girl out of trouble.
"Who knows? O'rer is him 'is dragon, Hitath is a sweetie. Maybe he just needs a rump in bed t'shake tha' bug in his butt loose." Nasuymi laughed, a clear honest laugh, at the thought.
