User ImageIt had been, according to Chimalsi's somewhat curious sensibilities, a day of accomplishment. The past few weeks' excursions had produced nothing of interest, his searching wasted on small, useless items such as ruined bow strings and rain-molded animal hides. It was as though the two-legged Natives were purposefully leaving him nothing to support his addiction, the frustration building with every soggy moccasin, every bland bit of pottery he stumbled over while looking for utensils of value. He needed finer things, the items of beautiful fashioning – he could not return home with dingy scraps to add to his glowing monument. Such an act would have ascended beyond unpardonable.

But the bitter ballad had changed its tune without explanation, and sunset saw him hit upon a sweet vein of treasure stuck just below the surface of the ground. Relying on quivering scales to tell him precisely where to dig, the kirin performed a few delicate tosses of his horned head to uncover a wealth of beads and carvings, likely an offering to some variety of spirit he couldn't see and therefore cared nothing for. He gathered all of them up with one eye on the fading horizon line, catching the roughly hewn rings of turquoise and quartz on his horn and letting them slide to a halt on the ribbed curve of gold. He filled his mouth with a second set of rounded, glassy teeth, scooping them out of the depression and sorting the harder material from the clay. Once removed, he pressed the ornamentation firmly against his gold-speckled gums, enabling him to count them all without tasting the fear of one going missing.

It was a princely find, a handsome addition that would infuse much needed vitality into his home, grown dark and sullen from days of neglect that he did not care to consider. But these new beauties would help, would make the splendor inviting to him again, and he could spend countless hours perfecting it until his gilded heart was satisfied. Still, the stallion walked rather than ran, allowing the darkness to clothe his body in shades of grey, his horn and armor an almost milky color as they absorbed the light of unhindered stars. He could stay the pleasure, could be cautious even when bliss awaited his homecoming; it would be all the more gratifying in the end.

Even though it was nearing sundown, Raksh found himself wandering away from the place that he and Ju usually spent the night. She had put up a bit of a fuss as he left, but he assured her he would be back shortly. He was merely in need of a stroll before bed. His spirit had been restless and antsy lately, and he felt that if he didn't get out and do something significant soon, he would go insane.

He set out in a westward direction, walking into the sunset. It was just beginning to set, flooding the sky with bright pinks and purples and blues. He sighed and closed his eyes. He said a small prayer of apology to the gods for his recent inactivity. He knew he had a responsibility and knew that he had been neglecting it. Granted, he had been devoting his energy to his family, which was indeed a noble cause, but it wasn't quite enough. His soul was that of an adventurer and a hero, and it stirred inside him, frustrated with his negligence of his true destiny.

Tossing his heavy mane to the side, he picked up his pace to a trot, running towards the sunset, his gold adornments rattling together as his heavy body fell back to the ground with each step.

It was a while down the path before he heard it, banded ears perking to their fullest, trying to hone in on the curious noise. A jingling, almost like a procession of bells, but without the sustaining note that would identify them as such, cut short by contact with something solid. Normally, he was inattentive to the happenings around him, but the heft of the various sounds, the way that they rang from a distance made him reconsider, mired as he was in tracking mode. Still, Chimalsi hesitated, his tongue weighed down already with beads, decorated with handsome baubles he'd taken from the earth. It would be safer, perhaps smarter to take them back to his homestead, then return to this spot to nose out whatever had snared his attention. But the prospect of that rich tinkling filled him with rarely-wakened ambition, and he did not want to miss it, to lose its beckoning song to the dawning night. The kirin angled his body, hooves following while he drew closer, using the forest to cover his scales from reflecting outward to warn his potential quarry.

He was not disappointed. By the time he came upon the elegantly draped male, the gold had been whitewashed by the moonlight, hanging in cords and soft filigree at his chest, his fish-pale belly, strung like the melted-down wealth of some faraway land. He stared for longer than was appropriate, wondering and enthralled. Carefully, he noted his position in relation to his surroundings, lowering his head and spitting the glass and carved stone out of his mouth to free up his speech. The rings he slid off more reluctantly, plinking them down to join their cousins. He tucked them gently, tenderly in a pile of filthy leaves, shrouding them with all the delicateness of a father protecting his unborn child. Then, he ventured out to where the other stallion cantered, stance shifting uncomfortably.

"Your adornments are very... captivating." He said by way of greeting, his own heavy necklace strung over his thick chest, whispering Beloved's instructions straight into his heart. It occurred to him then that his interactions with others stallions were limited, and that he did not know how best to ask where he might procure his own beauteous chains. So he fell silent, thoughtful, waiting to see if the information would come naturally to the forefront.
