When you look around today for evidence of dragons, you will not find any. In this modernized world of cars, airplanes, cities, and technology, there is no room for the noble creature that is the dragon. All that's left of their great presence is the legends of their existence. Some are good tales, telling of their wisdom and power. Others are dark, warning of the danger of incurring a dragon's wrath.

But legends did not always exist in the place of dragons. Long ago, when the Greeks held the most power in the world and their gods and goddesses walked among them, dragons graced the earth and skies with their presence. They were benevolent protectors of Nature. They preserved a delicate balance of life between humans and Nature. They chose humans to be their life partners. A culture evolved, with a form of self-government led by their Dragon Queen, Mother of Dragons. They were favored by Hera, wife of Zeus. There was peace.

There were those who did not favor peace, however. A human known as Hercules grew jealous of the humans dragons chose for partners. One man in particular drew his wrath. The Dragon Lord, protector of all dragons and champion of the Dragon Queen, was known to friends and foes as the human Cirilus and the dragon Dracosoroth. While the source of Hercules' anger has been lost to the mists of time, the outcome is legendary. Hercules slew Dracosoroth as proof of his strength. It is said that at the moment of the dragon's death, Cirilus shrieked in agony and went mad.

Hera heard this shriek on Mt. Olympus and knew instantly a great transgression had occurred. She saw a vision of the extinction of the dragon race, tipping the balance between Nature and humans, sending the entire world on a path of destruction. She quickly recovered the slain Dracosoroth's body and hung it among the stars, using it to create a gateway to a world she would create. Using all of her power, she formed a copy of Earth out of the mists of time and space and placed it behind a magical barrier, using the constellation Draco as the lock. She then sent every single dragon, their partners, and their partner's families to this new world.

The dragons mourned the loss of their Dragon Lord. In order to never forget the tragedy that occurred, they named the new world Drakostomar, in honor of the fallen Dracosoroth. They began new lives, re-creating their culture and society with small changes.

Many centuries pass. Dragon Queens have come and gone. Beautiful towns and cities have been built for the descendants of the first humans to live on Drakostomar. The magnificent capital Cirstolon stands as the setting for Drakostomar's crown jewel, the Dragon Queen. There has been no Dragon Lord since Cirilus and Dracosoroth.

"Announcing Their Royal Majesties, the 18th Senior Reigning Dragon Queen of Drakostomar, Seraphet and Timerath the Strong. All rise in their presence."

Seraphet swept into her throne room with an ominous glower, with Timerath closely behind her. The handsome woman stopped in front of the Dragon Queen's Throne of Judgement and sat, awaiting the first of the petitioners to approach her.

Once a week for five hours, petitioners from all over Drakostomar were permitted to gain audience with the Dragon Queen and present their cases. They could be anything from a dispute over land to a request for a dragon and dragoneer to escort a trade caravan. The rest of the time, petitioners would be directed to the correct departments that could best handle their problems. The UnBonded enjoyed having the access to their Queen if so needed. It made them feel important and closer to her, ensuring loyalty and contentment.

Normally, Seraphet didn't mind Petitioner's Time, but today, it seemed extremely tedious. Her mind was far away on another matter, one that irritated her to no end. Only when Timerath warned her not to scare the petitioners did Seraphet realize she was glaring at the poor man who was petitioning for a loan to start up a dragon harness shop in a small but fast-growing city two week's flight away. She forced her mind away from the source of her irritation and made herself relax and adopt a less threatening pose. The people of Drakostomar already had ample proof of her strength and courage in battle. They didn't need to think her so much of a warrior that she was eager to attack any who approached her.

By the end of Petitioner's Time, she was weary. She must have heard at least 50 petitions. Most had been easily dealt with, being requests for loans to start businesses. Some she had granted outright, others denied, and a handful had been turned over to her Chief of Treasury for review. She left the throne room with considerably less energy than she had come into it and headed for her private apartments. Timerath walked beside her, offering a strong shoulder to better support her tired dragoneer.
