Mian sighed, eyes watching the sky above the flickering surface of the water. It was such a pleasant day to. The sun warmed the water around her and sparkled off the waves above her. A few white fluffs floated in the blue. Like giant fish. Puffy fish. She giggled, swimming in a circle, flicking her tail until it was as if she were dancing. However her tummy gave the most ungirlish sound and she blinked, quickly checking no one heard. Satisfied that no one was around, she turned, diving down towards the bottom to find something to nibble on.
The seafloor was so much diffrent then her beloved upper layer. It was colder. Darker. And a reminder of how far away her beloved sky really was. But it had the best food and she wouldn't starve herself or risk being stranded in the river or lake just for some food closer to the sky. So to the floor it was. It wasn't all bad. The cooler water was a blessing some days. And it was quieter down here. Also a blessing. She found a few rocks beside a nice kelp bed and settled down ontop of them to have a bit of a snack.

Near where the mare has rested, a small fish was also finding a snack among the kelp. It darted back and forth, nibbling at one plant, then another.
Something seemed to move in the shadows below the rocks, moving around where the mare and fish were. Just out of view, unseen.
A large, reddish thing suddenly swamp up past the kelp bed. Against the sun coming down, the shadow was monstrous. It dived and flew past the kelp bed quickly, propelling itself with what looked like tentacles...before disappearing back to the darkness near the bottom of the rocks.
When the thing had passed, the little fish was gone, as well as some of the kelp plants.

A giant shadow, some huge creature. Mian started at the sudden movement and barely had time to register anything had even happened before the thing was gone. Her eyes were wide as she stared at where there had once been kelp. It was all gone now. The fish that had been swimming around her had disappeared, either in fright or perhaps... She shuttered a little at the thought of something EATING them. Turning her head, she stared at the area the thing had disappeared to. Her heart thudded. She wanted to go back to the surface. Away from this area, and whatever that was. And yet part of her worried if she moved, the shadow would come after her next. But then...her curious nature begged her to ignore both other thoughts and go look for the strange thing.
So carefully she got up, eyes locked on the spot it had disappeared to. With a swish of her tail, she moved closer and closer, stopping just short of the nearest rock. "Hello?" her voice wavered as she called out. "Is...someone there?"

"No...now go away..." Came a deep, quiet voice. In the shadows, two eyes could just barely be seen. Whatever it was, it wasn't coming out.

The blue mare blinked, tilting her head. Her heart slowed and resumed a normal pace and she relaxed. It seemed it wasn't dangerous. Least it wasn't going to eat her. She swam forward a bit, a bit more daring now that it seemed the "thing" was in fact not some random horrible monster. It could speak which relaxed her. And, relaxed, Mian smiled in what she hoped was a friendly manner. "You gave me a start, sir." She hoped it was a male, the voice was deep enough. "Why are you down there, away from the sun?" Carefully she swam forward just a bit more. "Its silly to say no one is there when someone has to be. I'm not someone who talks to rocks." She giggled sweetly.

A reddish colored hoof slipped out of the shadows, "No further...if you feel the need to speak, do so at a distance."
The hoof slid back into the darkness made by the rocks. "I'm down here to hide from the sun...as the darkness suits me better. Why do you flit up where you are in the open for predators to see you?"

A hoof... "Oh your another mer aren't you!" She exclaimed, forgetting his question for the moment. Her mind was quickly thinking of the shape and size of the shadow. It wasn't like any mer she had seen before, that's for sure. Then her brain caught up with the conversation and she blinked innocently, and a bit dumbly, at where she now knew him to be. "Predators? What predators? I've never run into any bad guys up near the surface. Aren't bad guys suppose to like the darkness?" Mian asked before realizing how that might be taken. "Not to say your a bad guy! I'm sure your not! I just like the warmth of the sun. And its so much closer to the sky..." Her head turned upward to stare at the fluttering sunlight and the blueness beyond the water. "I like the sky." She said after a moment, her voice growing distant and airy.

"Who's to say I'm not a bad guy?" The voice said quietly, eyes turning upward as if he too could see the sky. "How do you know predators wouldn't come to the surface? They have just as much right as they do to the shadows."
The eyes looked back down, staring at her. "Yes, I'm a mer."

The blue mare looked back in his direction, tilting her head. "If you were a bad guy, sir, I don't think I'd still be swimming here this vary moment." She said honestly. If he was a predator, he'd have eaten her, wouldn't he? Or he would have tried to have her come closer, not stay away. "And...I suppose so. But like I said, I've never met someone bad up by the surface. When I was little a mean ol' shark tried to chomp me, but that was when I was eating. When I was at the bottom. I'm sure a strong male could fight off anything bad down here, but I'm just a little female. A little mare. I can't." Mian looked around a little, the topic reminding her a bit of the fact there was always the possibility of danger. She never tried to think of it so normally the thought escaped her. "And you forgot, I said I liked the warmth, the sky. Its not just about whats safer. If its more dangerous up there, well then I suppose I'm not to smart, am I?"

"I did not forget," he replied, the eyes lowering as if he was settling onto the ground. "You want something you can have...the sky."

"I don't want anything." Mian said, eyes flicking upwards for a moment. "I want to be somewhere." She sighed softly. Deciding that if he was going to hurt her he would have done it by now, she moved forward again, but just far enough to settle herself on some rocks, watching the eyes. A part of her wanted to dive down there and see what he looked like. What he could possibly look like. But that was rude and while she didn't always say things right and sometimes forgot what she had been talking about, she did not consider herself rude. So, she figured she could try and coax him out. Even just being able to see his whole face would be nice.
"I haven't introduced myself. I'm Mian. And who might you be, sir. shadows?"

The eyes looked up, then back to the mare. "How can you want to be in the sky? You are a creature of the water..."
He sighed, shaking his head...or it seemed that way. Returning his gaze to her, he replied to her question. "I am called Architeuthis."

"The sky is so beautiful and free and open. It goes forever, over the land and the water. Those of the sky never have to stop. There is no limitations." Her voice took on the distant tone again. Going quiet for a moment after she stared blankly ahead, mind flying miles above her in the crisp air. However Mian was brought back to herself when a fish darted against her tail. She let out a slightly pained sigh and shook her head. "Its nice to meet you Architeuthis. Would you consider allowing me to see yourself? After all now that we've introduced ourselves, we're friends now and friends do not hide from other friends. Especially not in the shadows. Its rude." Her voice picked up, cheerful once more.

"I have no friends..." Archi replied to her request, his eyes staring out. "And I do not show myself to mere passersby. No matter how rude it may seem. Even if the other happened upon my solitude, with out permission..."
He wasn't making it easy. Why hadn't she taken the hint yet?

Mian, not being the brightest bit of coral in the sea, simply huffed. "Well that isn't nice. Do all "mere passerby" know your name?" She retorted. "When you tell someone your name then that means your friends now, didn't you ever learn that? And besides if you don't come up and speak to me like a civilized gentleman, I'm going to have to come down there myself." She nodded. The mare wanted to know why he had made such a shadow. And if it took her all day by goodness she'd be here till then! "Besides, You've already shown me yourself. You startled me when I was eating. Startling a lady, that isn't vary nice. You owe me something and letting me see you is the least you can do."
