Fun fact: we have a violin solo in our show this year! The girl doing it is on mallet instruments at all other times, though.
Marching a violin would be interesting, though... xd

Well, i think they could be part of the show. We had a band from Oklahoma and they had a bass guitar player, full set of drums, and an electric guitar in their last show.

Usually, no. Occasionally, you'll see them in the pit, I've seen a small orchestra as part of a pit. But do they march? No. Does it happen a lot? Nope. Unlike a brass instrument/woodwind/percussion, its sounds probably would have a hard time projecting without a microphone, and those things are a pain to set up, and you run the risk of the microphones not working.

Yeah, if anything, it would be in the pit.
Although my freshman year, my friend (now boyfriend) was like, "OH there's this SUPER good school, they even march violins!" Oh my poor naiive freshman mind. I totally fell for it...

I think they have violins in the Stanford marching band. Electric, most likely. Granted, they also have like keytars and people banging on kitchen sinks and probably some people who don't play anything.
Actually, in our band we have auditions for point, which is only for saxes, but people always come and audition on like, violin or bassoon as a joke. So I have seen a marching violin, haha.
