This was it, the deciding moment. Silver eyes were hardened on the ground, flickering with determination. Slowly, thoughtfully, he raised a hoof and held it, swaying slightly over two equally dense patches of grass. One more blink later, that same hoof came crashing down just outside one of the patches, his chosen patch. The clop sounded dully against the ground and then- Nothing happened. Frowning, Nakawara let his gaze slip to that second, unbothered patch just in time to see a cricket leap from its protection and off into the distance. It was far too small to keep track of and it was out of sight in an instant.
Well, darn.
It looked as if he had lost the playmate he'd been chasing. They had been playing a similar game nearly all the way across the clearing. The slender stallion was sure he had never gotten on so well with a bug before now. He grinned, in a way sated. It had been a nice break from the hard running he had been doing earlier. Already the sweat under his fine fur had dried completely. And despite the summer sun, he turned on his hooves, facing the center of the clearing again. With a starting snort, he picked up a speedy pace almost immediately, racing himself towards the center of the large area.

The warm summer sun had brought the mare out of her hiding. It had been a long time since had traveled to any sort of clearing. She was so skittish sometimes, it made her sad. Finally, though, Ciel had enough. She needed to get over things. So one brave step after another, she slowly approached the first clearing she had seen, golden eyes staring down at the ground to look for flowers. Yes flowers had a very calming effect. She had leaned down to sniff a little yellow flower, when she felt the vibrations on the ground.
Her neck jerked up and she let out a snort. In the process of smelling that flower, and feeling the vibrations, she had sniffed in too hard, and had gotten pollen up her nose. She shook her head, black mane shifting with the movement. That scared golden stare looked out and saw a silver and blue stallion moving with great speed into the same clearing. She had backed up afew steps before stopping and closing her eyes. 'NO!' she thought to herself, 'Ciel get over this. You will stand here, and be social. You have to try.' Amazing pep talk she gave herself, but it looked rather odd.
Slowly she opened one eye to peek out and called out with a unsteady tone, "Hello.."

It wasn't unusual to see him so caught up in the feel of wind through his mane that he didn't even notice someone stepping into the place he called home. As he whipped rowdily past, her unsure voice barely caught in his back-turned ears. However, it did, and his mind snapped to attention. Harsh speed turned into a slow trot as he turned his form around and back the way he had just come with a smile that turned somewhat apologetic upon taking in the sight of the mare truly and for the first time.
"Hi," he returned, looking her over, but not critically. With practiced ease, or perhaps because meeting new faces was just something he liked, he ambled over to her. Muscles began to relax. They had only complained for a quick moment at the suddenness in his decision to stop. Whether or not that was the case, he would have certainly felt rude and guilty if he had kept going. There was no one else around that she could have been calling after.
"Didn't mean ta pass ya up." There was a playful air to his voice, even through the apology. "I almost didn't hear ya, the wind gets really noisy when you're runnin'."

As he dashed passed her, both golden eyes went wide with shock. He was a fast one that was for sure! Ciel turned her body to look at him, almost a sad look for a moment. The mare blinked surprised that he had slowed and come back around. Her tail flicked and she backed up one step. His muscles might have been relaxed, but hers were obviously tense. Little could he know, she was having an internal fight with herself.
'You don't know what he is like yet,' she was telling herself. 'He may be a good stallion. give him a chance.'
Ciel offered him a smile. "You're pretty fast. Sorry I made you stop. Do you like to run?" She was trying so hard to be brave. After all he WAS nice enough to come back. "Do you normally run around this area?" She thought she might have seen some trails along her travels, but she wasn't sure who had made them. For her own sanity, she was praying it was him. She was practically begging in her head for him to say yes.

There was a childish obliviousness in his personality that masked her discomfort from him. In fact, he was so used to friendly faces that he just assumed she was as happy to meet him as he was becoming at the thought of conversing with her. He certainly didn't do it to be rude or inconsiderate. Her stiff form just didn't register as anything terribly nervous, especially when she gave him a smile.
"Thanks!" was his quick response to her compliment, though in a way it sounded almost like a question. He hadn't been offered such things enough to be all that used to them. "I love runnin'," he told her honestly, clopping his hooves as some sort of emphasis. "And don't worry about it, I can run anytime."
Glancing around them, he grinned at the area, a gesture more for him than her. Eventually he turned back and nodded. "All the time, this place is my home. I don't leave all that often, ya know? Only ta visit with friends." He motioned to the center of the clearing with a shoulder. "I have been all around this place, though. Ta each side of the clearing and back."

Ciel smiled warmly hearing of his passion."Running can be lots of fun. I don't run very often because I like looking at the ground, and its not a good idea to do both at the same time." She clicked her hoof on the ground a few times as if to imagine running herself. It hit the bluish mare she had yet to introduce herself. "My name is Ciel. Do you have a two-legger to comes here to take care of you?" She wondered if all of her kind had to deal with two-leggers like she had. Especially since she had two that cared for her.
She was slowly beginning to feel comfortable, her muscles relaxing."You visit your friends.. That sounds nice. I don't have many of those. How did you meet your friends?" Honestly, Ciel couldn't recall at that moment ANY friends she had. It was almost sad, if it weren't for the fact that she didn't seem sad about it. It just seemed normal for this mare to not be social or know anyone. However another thought came to her. Her eyes widened slightly at the thought as she couldn't believe she had almost missed it!
"This place is... your home?" Ciel's smile dropped and her eyes grew sad, ears folding back. "I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to just walk into your home.." Her head lowered, tail flicking. "I'm a little lost right now. I hope I am not bothering you.. um, excuse me what's your name?"

The stallion seemed to be considering something for a moment. "Naw, it's probably not a good idea ta look at the ground while ya run. If it were me, I'd just trip right on my face!" He let out an amiable laugh, his shoulders shaking. "But if you're walkin', I guess it helps keep ya from tripping better." That sounded about right. Always looking ahead, or in any interesting direction, Nakawara didn't have much experience with that idea. The bug game from earlier was probably the most he had stared at the grass this whole week.
"The name's Nakawara. Good ta meetcha." An ear flicked forward before he shook his head rather emphatically. "Don't worry about it! This place is as much public property as it is my home. That's what happens when ya live out on the plains. I've got no problem with visitors, especially if they stop to say hi." It still didn't occur to him that she was so timid. Perhaps then he wouldn't have been so loud and roudy, like he usually was. Well... maybe.
"No two-leggers around here, though. 'Cept past the trees that way." He gestured by tossing his head to the side. "My friend Temperance lives over there in the village. I met her in the trees one day. One of my other friends, Brioso, she lives in the mountains. I met her down near the river, though. My friends come from all over the place." He grinned. "Where are you from, Ciel? If you're lost, maybe I can help."

Ciel's little smile returned to her face, "Nice to meet you Naka...Nakawa... Nakawara.." She sighed, striking the ground with her hoof out of frustration with herself, before she looked at the blue stallion hopefully. "May I please call you Naka?" The mare's tail flicked and she twisted her head each way that he had mentioned meeting a friend, or at least what she guessed the direction was. After all, she wasn't kidding when she said she was lost.
Ciel looked at him, "I thought if I looked at the ground, I couldn't get lost when I went wandering around." She shook her head. "Bad plan, huh?" Slowly she was getting more and more comfortable near this male. His light nature helped her feel not so threatened in this place. Maybe.. maybe she could do this! Her ears perked up at the thought.
"Well I'm from.." Her body turned away as she looked back the way she came, before adjusting herself to stare off to the left, then the right of that direction. She looked back at him, her head lowering, "To be honest, I've been wandering by myself so long now I don't even remember where I came from. Silly huh?" She turned back to walk to the side of the male and shook her head, "Guess I focused too hard on that ground, and not enough about directions. What's that way?" She motioned her head in the direction of north.

"Of course, Naka is fine." He'd be called by nicknames many times and it certainly didn't bother him. Since he'd been saying his own name since he was a foal, it came rather easily. However, there had been other people he met whose names twisted his tongue. He wasn't exactly surprised that his own name could. It was a long one. "Whatever ya wanna call me, I'm not picky." Flashing her a smile, his head fell into a light shake.
"Well, maybe not the best plan. But ya made your way here and I kinda know my way around, so-" As always, he was definitely willing to help. Nakawara loved making friends and any friend in need was a friend indeed. "Hm... That's no good." If she couldn't remember where she was from, it might be a bit difficult to help her find her way back. And yet, he couldn't stop from wondering: if she couldn't remember, just how long had she been gone from there? Was it a place that she really needed to return to. He was curious, but he kept his maw shut for now. If whatever place it was wasn't important to her, would she had brought it up?
He considered this for a moment until Ciel asked him about directions. Ears swiveled forward and he lifted his head slightly, gazing off in the direction she had motioned to. "Oh, that way? If you keep going that way, you'll hit the trees and then the mountains. Past that is the desert, I hear, but I've never been all the way there."
