I'm pretty sure that a good bunch of us in here are still living under the same roof as their parents, and I'm making an educated that their being a metal fan has been noticed by their parents.

What I really wanted to ask was: What do your parents/family think of your music? Do they tell you to turn that s**t down, or turn it up, or just don't care at all?

Me and my dad have spent many an evening chilling in the kitchen or the basement with a few of my Sonata Arctica/Nightwish/Tyr/Korpiklaani/etc. whatever albums on the stereo, and just talking about random stuff. Most of the time, it's about the music.
He really likes Sonata Arctica and Nightwish because they remind him of Rush/Queen at times, and pretty much most of my other bands for the musical parts. He doesn't care much for "that growling singing" though.

My mom? Well, I quote her thus:
"Well, for all they sing about chopping off heads and summoning demons, I'm sure they're all really nice boys who remember to call their mothers and say where they are on tour."

My parents where always supportive of me when I was in a Metal band, and even though I know they don't enjoy Death Metal much, they still came to my shows every now and then and seemed to enjoy themselves.

As listening goes, my mom likes a fair bit of Metal, usually Gothic Metal, as long as theres no opera-like singing or growling.
My dad doesn't hate it, but would rather not listen to most of it. He's always been more of a fan of Reggae and upbeat style music, so its pretty understandable that most Metal doesn't really click with him.

They never cared, and still don't, if I listen to it. I don't usually play it out loud anyways though, I use headphones so that I can turn it up as loud as I want, with out bothering anyone.

My parents hate most of it, though there are always those mellower bands/songs you can slip in like Korpiklaani instrumentals or certain Opeth songs.

In any case, they know I play music they hate, and at my age it no longer matters whether they approve (I'm not doing that whole teen who wants to be treated adult thing, I'm 25) but when I WAS a bit younger as long I didn't make them listen to it, they never really cared. My dad's only objections regard gangster rap, but like I said I'm old enough now that it doesn't really matter any more.

Also, that quote from your mom is awesome ^_^

Years ago, when I still lived with my parents I didn't have that much music on CDs or on my laptop. And I didn't listen to a lot of music back then anyway. My death and grindcore fan of a younger brother still lives at home and blares music out loud when he's at home. My parents don't really care about the music he plays, but just as long as he turns it down when they're going to sleep or if they have people visiting.

Mum likes folk and power metal, at least judging by her reactions to what my brother plays. I was at my parents' this past weekend (because of Tuska = easier transport etcetc.) and mum was jamming to some Finntroll on Sunday, since my brother was playing it, because we were going to go see Finntroll that afternoon at Tuska. Death and grind core she doesn't like at all. And she made a :S face when she heard me and my brother were going to see Dark Funeral play earlier this year. xd I guess she's cool about what me and my brother listen to, just as long as we don't start worshipping satan or drawing pentagrams or other satanic stuff.

@ Digital Malevolence: That's good that they were supportive of your being in a band. I know a fair amount of other metal kids whose parents aren't half as understanding.

@Volvy: Indeed it is an awesome quote. I was raised in a witty household. They've made loads of cracks about how they think it's the funniest thing in the world that their sweet little daughter is a metalhead.

@ Dark_Mana: Your mom seems like a cool person. Yes, it is all okay so long as you don't try summoning The Beast in the living room. xD
