This pickled vegetable...Why does everyone think that "pagan" instantly means "witch" and vice-versa?
Not all pagans are witches, just like not all witches are pagan. Witchcraft is a craft and anyone can practice it regardless of religious belief, race or cultural background.Paganism is a term that refers to a myriad of different religions and not all of them include witchcraft as a part of their practice. Honestly, equating paganism to witchcraft is like saying "all painters are French" or "all carpenters are Jewish". ... could kick your a** !!

Renkon Root This pickled vegetable...Why does everyone think that "pagan" instantly means "witch" and vice-versa? ... could kick your a** !! But why do you say that "everyone" thinks that? Nobody can know what everybody thinks. I know that pagan doesn't mean witch, and witch doesn't mean pagan. Even my parents know that.

I am not sure what causes this popular misconception. Perhaps it has to do with Paganism being considered ungodly because it rejects the popular version of the divine and Witchcraft being considered sinful do to ungodly practices by the popular religions. So the years of their collective bad press have led to them being associated with one another within the cultural subtext. It likely persists because many of those who take interest in practicing either witchcraft or a pagan path make the same mental correlation and they don't take the time to consciously undo that deeply ingrained misconception causing them to perpetuate the problem though their own words and actions.

Nobody can know what everybody thinks. I know that pagan doesn't mean witch, and witch doesn't mean pagan. Even my parents know that. It's because of misinformation in the world. You have Christians who assume that every pagan practices witchcraft when that's not true. And you have pagans who assume every pagan practices witchcraft because they do.

But we also have non Christians who assume Christians are certain denominations. Ie: "They go to church and have eight kids, they must be Catholic" or, non Muslims saying/thinking/believing "All Muslims believe in terrorism"
It's just misinformed people. There's very little you can do except kindly correct them when they make a mistake, there's really no reason to get huffy about it. Not everyone knows everything about Paganism or Witchcraft and I think that it's important to remember that and also not to make generalizations about everyone in the world.

I thought this was basically lesson one stuff... I could be wrong, but some people are assuming the wrong thing from one type to another.
What I mean is some people think all Canadians say "eh" at the end of everything. It's a common misconception among some people that Wiccan and pagan are the same, but the people within the community should know the difference.
While I honestly feel that this is common sense stuff... there may be some people who think it's important enough to say.

Actually no. The typical bigoted statement I get from people when I told them I was a Catholic or have relatives who are Catholic it's "Oh they worship Mary as a deity and also worship the saints, they must be pagan". The 8 children thing is more of a Mormon stereotype than a Catholic one. Nonetheless in all religious circles, misinformation is a problem. A big one.

Actually where I come from, the statement about plenty of children is very common in regards to Catholics especially since my city is predominantly not anything other than Pentecostals, United, and Catholic. If it wasn't, I wouldn't have used it. :3 Misinformation however is a problem in regards to anything even more mindane things like media broadcasts, police investigations etc. I don't see why some people get huffy about religious misinformation. The easiest thing to do is to politely correct them and move on.
